There are moments when crooks have to rethink their methods. An alleged thief, who tried to steal a painting worth several hundred pounds, was forced to do that after he realized he couldn’t hide the painting where he wanted to.

West Midlands Police have released surveillance footage of the crime which occurred at Castle Fine Art Gallery in Birmingham. The man walked around the building, seemingly admiring the artworks mounted on the walls.

When one piece caught his eye, he reached out to jiggle it and realized it could easily be removed from the wall.

At that point, he snatched the artwork and comically tried stuffing it into his sweatshirt. It didn’t come close to fitting, so he tucked the painting under his arm and brazenly walked right out of the gallery.

Staff managed to stop him outside. The suspect then released the artwork and took off.

An investigator for the case remarked “We are now keen to identify the man in the CCTV to prevent him from turning his attention to smaller objects.”
