A new report from Washington D.C.’s inspector general has found that a lot of traffic and parking tickets in the District of Columbia are erroneously sent out or given to the wrong people.

Traffic citations in D.C. generate around 179 million dollars in revenue every year.

The withering report audited the almost two and a half million parking and traffic tickets that were issued in the year 2013.

Compared to other states, Washington D.C. had a higher rate of mistakes when it comes to traffic related tickets, which implies that they are operating under a flawed system.

One problem highlighted by the report is the use of speed cameras on roads with more than one lane.

If the picture shows multiple vehicles, the police department has to decide which one to send the ticket to.

Although there are multiple photos of each alleged traffic violation, the report found that police officers often issue tickets arbitrarily without sufficient evidence.

Another frequent problem in the report involves issuing tickets to vehicles registered under different license plate numbers.

This has lead to several cases where out of state drivers are forced to pay the ticket, or prove that the government made a mistake.
