Toilet Paper Maker Does Away With The Tube

Every year 17 billion toilet paper tubes are thrown out, so one manufacturer has decided to stop using them.

Kimberly-Clark has already begun releasing the tubeless rolls of Scott Naturals in select markets.

Their motivation in doing away with the tube is to cut back on the amount of paper waste they create.

At present, the annual accumulation of tube refuse weighs in at 160 million pounds.

If placed end to end, they would stretch to the moon and back twice.

Stacked up, the tubes would be able to fill the Empire State Building 2 times over.

Finding an alternative to the cardboard centers wasn’t easy, but engineers working out of the company’s Neenah, Wisconsin location did it.

They devised a way to roll the toilet paper so it would still hold its hollow core and fit on all standard holders.

When the last sheet is pulled off the spindle, it leaves nothing behind.

Manufacturing costs are said to be about the same as they are for the traditional rolls.

What’s saved by not using cardboard is spent on the additional manufacturing expenses.
