What if mechanical equipment could sense damage similar to how human skin is able to feel injury?

The latest technology under development by a British defense company is a sensor equipped skin-like covering designed to coat aircraft, and even ships and vehicles.

The so-called skins are outfitted with tens of thousands of micro-sensors, which allows them to detect potential problems or disasters before they occur.

In addition that, they can measure strain, wind speed, temperature and movement . Senior research scientist Lydia Hyde who works at BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre, invented the technology.

Of all things, her dryer was the inspiration for the plane skins. She got the idea by watching her tumble dryer which has a sensor to stop it from overheating.

She stated “Observing how a simple sensor can be used to stop a domestic appliance overheating got me thinking about …how we could replace bulky, expensive sensors with cheap, miniature, multi-functional ones.”

The sensors could be as tiny as dust particles and in the future might be sprayed onto a plane like paint. What do you think of the technology?
