School Tosses Its Snack Vending Machine

Due to rising health concerns for young people, Brentwood High School in Suffolk County, New York has done away with their vending machines filled with unhealthy options.

Kids may love sugar-filled sodas and high-fat snacks, but that doesn’t mean the foods love them back.

Due to rising health concerns for young people, Brentwood High School in Suffolk County, New York has done away with their vending machines filled with unhealthy options.

When kids return to classes this fall they’ll be greeted instead by a selection of healthier options.

Those will include nibbles with whole grains, fruit, dairy, protein, and vegetables.

All of the nation’s public schools that receive federal money for lunch programs are expected to take similar measures in the coming school year.

Federal guidelines now dictate that schools must reconsider what their students are eating and ensure that it’s good for them.

Calorie limits have been placed on everything from entrees to treats.

That includes what’s put in vending machines.

The move is in response to expert reports that diabetes and obesity are on the rise among the younger generation.

Said a Suffolk County Legislator, “Our obesity in our teens has tripled since 1980, and they develop health problems later in life and eventually shortens their life span.

One student admitted she’ll miss the Doritos, but said she supports the changes.
