After some impressive and persistent sleuthing by Netizens, tech giant Google Inc. has just admitted that they are responsible for the account, which features videos that are mostly blue and red rectangles, along with a computer generated tone for audio.
There are two videos uploaded by the account that don’t match the same formula, including a shot of the Eiffel Tower in France and an episode of the cartoon show Aqua Teen Hunger Force that is dubbed in French.
The test channel is one way that Google keeps track of upload quality on YouTube.
Video clips are sent to YouTube’s servers and their quality is compared with the original file to make sure that they match.
An official statement from Google reads: "We're never gonna give you uploading that's slow or loses video quality, and we're never gonna let you down by playing YouTube in poor video quality. That's why we're always running tests like Webdriver Torso."
And right there Google just rickrolled all of us! Their statement is a reference to a song by 80’s singer Rick Astley, who appeared in silhouette on one of the Webdriver Torso videos.
