Authorities in Nepal are investigating reports that a Chinese climber used a helicopter during her ascent of Everest to fly over an area that was the location of the deadliest accident in the history of the world’s highest mountain.

Forty-year old Wang Zing, along with five Sherpa guides were the first and only expedition to ascend Everest from the Southeast Ridge route on the Nepal side since the avalanche that killed 16 Sherpa guides on April 18th, 2014.

After the avalanche, many expeditions were cancelled and Sherpa guides refused to go up that route for a variety of reasons, including showing respect for the dead, and because they were upset about how the government in Nepal reacted to the tragedy.

Wang has denied allegations that she used a helicopter to help her reach the summit, which would have been a violation of traditional morals, and local laws that don’t usually allow helicopters to fly any higher than base camp for environmental reasons, unless there is a medical emergency.

Wang reportedly acknowledged her expedition only used a helicopter to get a cook and a porter to Camp II with supplies, but the Nepalese authorities are still investigating the allegations.
