A new teardrop-shaped car designed by students from the Universite Laval in Quebec is capable of driving 2,824 miles on a single gallon of gas.

The three-wheeled vehicle won Shell’s Eco-marathon Americas competition, which is an annual contest that challenges students to build and race energy efficient cars.

Students from the same university have won five out the past six Shell Eco-marathon competitions, and the winning vehicle from last year reportedly got 3,587 miles to the gallon.

Schools compete in several different categories as part of the marathon, including vehicles that are powered by diesel, biodiesel, hydrogen, natural gas, solar, and electricity.

The categories of vehicles include prototypes designed just for fuel efficiency, and UrbanConcept cars that have to be comfortable and safe for passengers.

Next year, the Shell Eco-marathon Americas will move from Texas, where it’s been taking place for the past five years, to the Motor City of Detroit, Michigan.
