According to a recent study, the spreading of a contagious yawn says a lot about the closeness of a relationship.

The tighter a group is, the more likely they are to respond.

After observing people in various social contexts, researchers found that when among family, reactions were most likely to include everybody.

Among friends many did, but not necessarily the whole group.

Acquaintances and strangers rarely yawned back at all.

Timing has a lot to do with how close one perceives the relationship to be, as well.

The longer it takes, the more distance they feel.

Of course, wrapped up in all of that science is the possibility that a person could track somebody’s yawn responses over time to see if the relationship is picking up steam or fading away.

Before going that route, keep a couple things in mind. One is that could get really creepy really fast. The other is that it’s just one study out of many.
