According to a recent study from researchers at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Sopot, Poland, people are perceived as being more honest when they put a hand over their heart. In addition, making the gesture also apparently encouraged people to be more honest themselves.

There is a Polish expression that translates to “with hand over heart,” which is similar to the English phrase “cross my heart” to convey honesty.

The study results are based on four different experiments that tested the subjects’ honesty in a variety of situations.

For one of the experiments, subjects looked at pictures of someone who they believed to be a friend of the researcher showing them the picture, and were asked to rate how attractive they thought the person was.

The researchers wrote that “The unattractive faces were rated significantly lower by participants keeping their hand on their heart, rather than their hip. When presented with an opportunity to lie about someone’s appearance, people who put their hands over their hearts remained more honest, even if it meant being impolite.”

Although there isn’t any scientific explanation for the results, one theory is that children associate this gesture with truth telling starting at a very young age.
