Whiteout winter storm conditions near Toronto have been blamed for a 96-car pileup that occurred on Highway 400.

Luckily, no serious injuries resulted from the massive accident, but 3 people were transported to the hospital.

Images of the site underline what a truly extraordinary thing that is.

The affected section of the highway was shut down immediately and indefinitely. At the time of the closure, it was estimated that it could last the entire day.

A sharp decrease in visibility and slippery road conditions were caused by a snow squall that came in suddenly over Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

"A lot of vehicles on the road. It's going to take hours to get them cleaned up. 96 vehicles were involved. It was a chain reaction, lot of carnage and debris all over the road." [CBC]

Accidents and hazardous driving conditions were reported throughout the Toronto area, and officials have closed other roads as well.

Among them are segments of two other highways.
