As part of a prank, a bunch of singles in Shanghai decided to purchase all of the odd numbered seats for the February 14th showing of 'Beijing Love Story'.

Well some folks in China who had those plans for the holiday got an unexpected and slightly cynical surprise. As part of a prank, a bunch of singles in Shanghai decided to purchase all of the odd numbered seats at one theatre for the February 14th showing of 'Beijing Love Story'.
Fully understanding the prime time, lovely dovey flick would be the most popular film on that specific date, the group’s only goal was to force couples to sit apart in the theater.
Little is known about the organizer of the event. According to a local newspaper, an anonymous, so-called ‘computer nerd’ started the campaign online under the username UP.
While the prank might be thought of as a little mean, romantic movie goers were given a warning beforehand. A message posted by UP noted "Want to see a movie on Valentine’s Day? Sorry, you’ll have to sit separately. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Give us singles a chance."
A seating chart confirmed every single odd numbered chair was taken. The theater opted to sell the remaining solo seats at a discount price.
