Officials in Dubai announced that they plan to launch a drone-delivery system in about a year.

It will be used to drop off drivers’ licenses and other sorts of IDs and permits to residents.

Of course, having such sensitive personal materials couriered via an unmanned craft is risky, but they have a plan for that.

Before the goods are released, identifications will be checked by retinal scanners or fingerprint verification systems.

The prototype has already been unveiled.

It’s a four-rotor, battery-powered craft with an upper compartment for documents and packages.

Overall, the device measures 18 inches wide.

What it’s capable of from a technology standpoint is at this time cloudy.

Next comes 6 months of testing to see how it performs in an environment characterized by brutal sand storms and punishing heat.

Drone delivery has been dreamed of by many, but thus far the limitations of the often unwieldy vehicles have proven quite the hurdle.

Undaunted, Dubai is pressing forward and looks forward to the trials as a time to see what sorts of services will be best assigned to the unmanned vehicles.
