Florida is home to many terrifyingly huge reptiles. An engineering crew in the Everglades recently came across a massive 18 foot long python while conducting an inspection of levees.

To be precise, the python measured exactly18 feet 2 inches. It was first suspected the snake would land a state record for the size.

However according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Burmese python in question was 6 inches shorter than one discovered last year.

The engineers found the 150 pound snake on February 4th. After photos were captured, it was shot and killed.

The pythons pose a serious threat to Florida’s native wildlife, as they have no natural predators there. Authorities believe the Burmese python population has hit the 150,000 mark in just the Everglades.

A spokesperson for the South Florida Water Management District, Randy Smith elaborated on the problem stating “You'd be hard pressed to find a rabbit or squirrel down there in the Everglades now. These snakes eat alligators — or they try to. They don't have any enemies and they eat anything they can get their teeth on."
