24,000 Child Injuries Caused by Shopping Carts Annually

A new study by researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has cast a spotlight on the potential dangers of children riding in shopping carts.
A new study by researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has cast a spotlight on the potential dangers of children riding in shopping carts.
Data from the study is based on statistics of people 15 years old and younger who visited the emergency room after having an accident involving a shopping cart between 1990 and 2011.
The results show that over half a million accidents happened during that time, which averaged out to more than 24 thousand a year, or 66 children a day who are involved in serious shopping cart accidents.
Just over 70 percent of the injuries were caused by falling out of the cart, and head injuries made up 78 percent of the cases that were part of the study.
Doctor Gary Smith, lead author of the study, wrote in a press release that he thinks “It is time we take action to protect our children by strengthening shopping cart safety standards with requirements that will more effectively prevent tip-overs and falls from shopping carts.”
Other countries have created stability standards for shopping carts making them safer for children to ride in.
