Company Creates Autoluminescent Plants
A biotechnology company based out of St. Louis recently unveiled a lineup of plants that are entirely autoluminescent.
Glowing animals and plants seem to be all the rage these days. A biotechnology company based out of St. Louis recently unveiled a commercially available plant that is entirely auto luminescent.
For years, Dr. Alexander Krichevsky, Bioglow’s founder and chief scientist, has been studying the molecular biology of plants in addition to the bioluminescence of aquatic bacteria.
All the hard work paid off. His newest creation is being referred to as the “world’s first auto luminescent plants”.
While glowing plants have been introduced in the past, the way in which they derived that lighting effect was due to chemicals and UV light. Bioglow’s offering gets the glow from the undergrowth of the plant.
DNA forms found in nature are utilized, similar to the type of light fireflies emit. Said a spokesperson at Bioglow “the auto luminescent plant’s light emission machinery is encoded on a cellular level allowing the plant to constantly emit visible light during its life cycle.”
Krichevsky’s goal in developing the plants is to develop “more sustainable, cleaner and affordable light sources”.
