In shopping malls all across China, “Husband Cloakrooms” are popping up to give men a place to rest while their wives shop to their hearts’ content.
Turns out cloakrooms are for more than just coats in China. In shopping malls all across the country, “Husband Cloakrooms” are popping up to give men a place to rest while their wives shop to their hearts’ content.
Depending on the location, the cloakroom can look like a corporate office, a modern lounge, a train station’s waiting room, or just a fancy bench with a sign above it. Some reportedly even have viewing platforms or glass walls so guys can try to keep an eye on the number of bags their spouses are accumulating.
While the bare minimum offered and the most widely used is some type of seating, other potential offerings include tables, televisions, public computers with free internet, books, magazines, and areas to smoke. Some even offer bars or other made-to-order food and drinks.
Even though some pictures show the men looking less than enthusiastic about their time in shopping daycare, its popularity with men ready for a snooze is growing. While there is a cloakroom that first appeared in 2006, most have been opening since 2010 in cities such as Shenzhen and Guigang City. Other cities like Shanghai or Beijing have yet to open one.
