Police have all sorts of clever methods to catch those who just can’t resist an illegal act. Recently a fake, robotic deer was set up in Florida as part of an effort to catch anyone who illegally shot at it. The stunt worked.

A man, who had been driving by, noticed the deer on the side of the road and believed it was real. He got out of the vehicle and shot the robotic Bambi.

Local police officers had been hiding nearby and waited until the perfect moment to arrest him. An officer detailed the incident stating “He crossed a ditch and walked up toward the fence carrying a rifle. He placed the rifle on the fence to steady himself and shot at the replica.”

The sting operation was set up by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. Brett Russel Thompson is the shooter in question.

He is now facing charges including discharging a gun from a roadway and hunting a deer during closed season. Thompson reportedly admitted to officers that he knew what he had done was illegal.

Officers along with fish and wildlife authorities hope word will spread about the fake deer and deter unethical hunting practices.
