A new apartment complex in Qingdao, China is baffling locals. The problem is that the windows, which at first glance appear to be real, are actually painted on.

Contactors and homeowners will probably be the first to tell you that replacing or installing windows aren’t cheap tasks. A new apartment complex in Qingdao, China decided to take a shortcut.

The windows, which at first glance appear to be real, are actually painted on. They’re only on one side of the building, and reportedly at a glance, are pretty convincing. However, a closer look reveals the truth.

White paint, made to resemble window trim and a dark colored middle portion, painted to appear as glass make up the fake windows. The high rise structure is reportedly a government owned complex, constructed for low income families.

It’s been speculated that the faux widows were an idea to basically cut corners and save money, while giving the building a classier look. However some locals believed the contracting company responsible for the construction cheated the government by painting fake windows as a way to increase profits.

But a local authority put the rumors to rest announcing that the coated windows were merely for decoration and they were only painted on the part of the structure that houses the elevator shaft.
