The wires are small and flexible enough to be woven into fabric, which could be used as a way for people’s clothes to generate electricity, and charge their personal electronic devices.
Solar cells that create electricity work in the same way as rooftop solar panels by introducing light photons from the sun into positively and negatively charged layers to start a photovoltaic effect that produces usable electricity.
The fabric has yet to be tested in the field to see if it can withstand the wear and tear of being a worn as a garment, or used as covering for shelter.
Researchers say that the United States military should be the first to experiment with the electricity generating fabric material, so it can be used for soldier’s uniforms and the outside structures like tents.
Another company in the Netherlands has developed a wearable solar coat featuring removable solar panels on it that produce electricity to keep electronic devices like cell phone, or tablet batteries charged.
