County Passes Pit Bull Spay and Neuter Law

Riverside County in California has passed a law that requires all pit bulls over four months old be spayed or neutered.

The law applies only to Riverside’s unincorporated areas.

It was established in hopes that it will diminish the number of attacks occurring in the area, as well as the quantity of unwanted dogs that end up at shelters.

Currently, 3000 pit bulls end up being euthanized by the county every year.

In total, animal control authorities say they take in 35 to 45 hundred of them annually, many of which are found abandoned by fearful owners or discovered at fighting rings.

A county supervisor notes that pit bull adoptions are uncommon, due to their image at this time.

Some residents and pit bull rights advocates are interpreting the action as the country trying to get rid of the breed in general.

A local veterinarian who opposed the move said that the law could produce a dangerous backlash. She believes that those with pit bulls that aren’t spayed or neutered will likely forego training and expert care for fear of being caught.

Dogs exempt from the rule include those belonging to law enforcement and breeders.
