Unidentified suspects in Italy reportedly chose a jail as the target location for a brazen theft.

A prison is where thieves are usually sent after committing a crime. However, some unidentified suspects in northern Italy reportedly chose a jail as the target location for a brazen theft.

Workers at the Torre del Gallo detainment facility recently learned that robbers were able to sneak into the prison and steal over $8,000 worth of inmates' cash. The heist was pulled off on a recent Wednesday during the early morning hours.

The stolen money had been kept in a safe in the office of the prison director. The general secretary of the prison workers’ union stated “An investigation has been launched; at this stage we are unable to say whether any prison guards were involved.”

It’s currently believed at least three or four thieves took part in the break-in. However, there is a mystery surrounding the circumstances of how they were able to enter and leave the secure facility undetected.

It’s speculated the suspects, who are all still at large, may have used two underground passages that aren’t equipped with surveillance footage to get inside the building.
