Milwaukee is one place where winter seems to drag on forever. The city has had challenges in the past with de-icing solutions.

Local authorities are already gearing up for this coming winter, announcing that public works crews will attempt to mix cheese brine with rock salt in an effort to keep the roads safe.

The brine is basically a liquid substance which is left over from cheese making. The reasoning for the seeming bizarre change in the deicing method, is the controversy over utilizing solely rock salt.

There are fears concerning the long term effects of the salt on public roads and on the environment as a whole. However there is a downside to the cheese brine solution; its most likely going to make the streets and general area smell distinctively sour.

Milwaukee has worked in the past to lessen the heavy amounts of rock salt used. From 1999 to 2001,the city used a substance similar to molasses, however it didn’t work out too well.

Locals complained it smelled horrible and they were tracking the sticky matter into their homes. Then in 2009, crews sprayed beet juice onto rock salt. That also didn't turn out well.

For now, city officials are trying to locate a cheese brine supplier in the local area for the latest effort.
