Humans are not the only ones writing blogs anymore. As part of a conservation effort, four birds of prey write about their daily activities through a new technology called Natural Language Generation.

University of Aberdeen scientists and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB are re-establishing a permanent community of red kites in the Scottish Highlands. Their website shares the birds’ lives with the public.

The birds have satellite tags that transmit their whereabouts up to six times daily. This information is tied to other data such as weather, habitat, and geography.

Initially, an RSPB officer used all this information to write the blogs, but it took too long. With Natural Language Generation, a computer automatically identifies, interprets, and converts the large amounts of complex data into readable text appearing as a blog entry.

The impressive website also features each bird’s biography, a map, and links to photos of their environment.

RSPB North Scotland’s Stuart Benn said, “We have to look at all ways of bringing people and nature back together and digital technology is an increasingly important means of doing that.”
