There’s nothing that can ruin a day quite like stepping in dog poo. A suburb in Paris had decided to go to an extreme level, hoping to catch canine owners who rudely leave behind their dog’s feces on public streets.
Authorities in Montereau-Fault-Yvonne are going to be using already installed close-circuit television cameras, commonly referred to as CCTVs, in an effort to punish pooch owners. The deputy mayor stated “Between 10 and 20 dog owners dirty the town. It’s a plague, the locals are always complaining to me about it.”
It’s estimated the dog poop costs the town roughly $268,000 annually to clean up. Previously town officials tried putting up posters and installing stations holding clean up bags, but those not-so-subtle attempts at bringing awareness to the messy situation failed. Dog poo still posed a problem.
The surveillance cameras will allow town authorities to seek out and punish the canine owners. If caught, they will face a fine of $47.
Over the past decade, the suburb has installed about 60 CCTVs to crack down on crime.
The effort is a step in the right direction, as Paris was named the ‘Dog Mess Capital of the World' in 2001.
