For many people, it's one of their biggest fears - getting bitten by a snake.

Two New Brunswick, Canada boys, ages 5 and 7, were recently found dead, believed to be strangled by an African rock python.

The nearly 15-foot snake escaped from a pet store and into the apartment above it where the two boys were reportedly attending a sleepover.

Police confirmed that the store owner and apartment resident are one and the same.

It remains unknown how the python escaped and why it went after the two children.

Typically, pythons don’t kill when unprovoked, nor do they generally consider humans to be a food source.

While the snake was above the Canadian province’s legal limit of 3 meters, the Deputy Mayor reported that overall the pet store was licensed and in compliance with area bylaws.

Some area residents clearly don’t feel it is, as there has been a petition calling for the store’s closure circulating for about a year.

The person who started the campaign against the shop cites animal overcrowding, shoddy upkeep, and poor animal health among their many reasons.
