Using a smartphone app that has users rate how they feel during daily activities, the researchers found that the only thing people thought was worse than working was being sick in bed. They even preferred cleaning their house or standing in line to working.

A new study from researchers at the Centre for Economic Performance and The University of Sussex shows that people are unhappy when they’re working.
Using a smartphone app that has users rate how they feel during daily activities, the researchers found that the only thing people thought was worse than working was being sick in bed.

They even preferred cleaning their house or standing in line to working.

The study sent reminders to the app users to check in about what they were doing and how they felt, while they recorded the responses.

Alex Bryson, who worked on the study said: “Although work can be beneficial, it can also stress you out and make you worried and anxious. That’s why we normally have to be paid to work in the first place, because in the moment, we’d rather actually be doing anything else.”

The smartphone app utilized for the study is called Mappiness, which records users feelings in real time compared with previous studies where participants were remember their feelings and activities from the day before.
