An Arizona woman recently had to evacuate herself and her 50 pigeons when the Yarnell area blaze started heading for her home. Having no place to take them, she was forced to release them.

They didn’t seem to want to leave any more than she wanted to see them go. She said that to encourage them out of their loft she had to throw out food as an enticement.

The woman has been caring for the birds for years, having found many of them herself while working as a gardener.

Over the years her flock has grown and to house them all she picked up some carpentry skills and built them an aviary the size of a carport.

She said, "It's me and them. I live alone in the middle of nowhere."

She also mentioned how hard it was for her to walk away from them knowing they’d be expecting her to be returning home soon.

Her hope is that as pigeons have traditionally strong homing instincts, they’ll find their way back when it’s safe to return.

Started by a lightning strike on June 28th, officials say the fire is still a considerable way from being contained.
