Reports say that the unnamed worker's actions led to over one million dollars in damages to an Airbus A320 British Airways plane.
Unintentionally the handler left a luggage scanning device on the plane’s engine cover. The engine sucked in the scanning tool while powering up in preparation for take-off.
The plane was fully loaded with passengers when a terrifyingly loud bang broke the peace and quiet.
All 150 travelers were immediately evacuated. They were forced to wait three hours for another flight, while plane repair crews tried to determine the problem.
A spokesperson for the airline “This accident could have been a lot worse. The plane could have been downed if it had happened after take-off. The baggage handler in question is mortified.”
It remains unclear if the worker was fired from his position or faced disciplinary action resulting from the expensive mistake.
