55-year-old David Greer didn't pay for a cherry pie while grocery shopping. That simple mistake got him fired from his public works job.

It’s hard to believe what some people can lose their jobs over. A man in Bridgeport, Washington was fired over a fruit pie.

55-year-old David Greer had been shopping at the M & R Supermarket. He slipped a cherry fruit pie, priced at $1.69 in his pocket and continued grabbing more items.

Once his hands were full, he went to the checkout line, but forgot to pay for the pie. He brought all of the food back to his co-workers at Bridgeport’s public works department.

Greer had forgotten all about the pie until he received a citation for shoplifting. He went to the city mayor and told her about the incident.

Marilynn Lynn put him on leave for one month. Greer spoke to the grocery store owner and worked out a deal. He wrote a letter of apology and paid for the pie.

The ticket was dismissed in court, however once Lynn learned about the settlement, she decided to fire Greer.

Local residents have protested in lieu of the firing and Greer is initiating a wrongful termination lawsuit. He worked as the city’s water distribution manager for over 20 years.
