Zhang Lu - Flowers of Spring (Winter Jasmine) 張露-迎春花 1951

Winter Jasmine迎春花 literally means welcome(yíng) Spring(chūn) flower(huā). 迎春Yíngchūn means Spring Festival ... add 花huā and we have "winter jasmine". In England, the New Year falls in Winter, but the Chinese New Year marks the beginning of Spring, and is the most important festival.
兒er = child, but in this song the winter jasmine 'children' are of course the buds opening into flowers. I have included both terms in the English translation.
The song is the opening track on EMI Pathe 100:The Series Vol 1: Chang Loo and Xiao Loo released in 2004. This features individual recordings that Chang and her sister Xiao made in Hong Kong during the early 1950s. Xiao was an equally fine singer and can be found elsewhere in my channel.

Zhang Lu was born in Suzhou, China, on January 21 1932, but moved to Shanghai at the age of 4, following the death of her father. From her early teens she was entertaining audiences in clubs and on the radio to help support her family. She moved to Hong Kong in 1952, captivating the people there. In 1959, she married musician Ollie Delfino from Singapore, and they had two sons. They emigrated to Canada in 1980, but returned to Hong Kong in 1985 to help her son's future. In November 2008, she made her last trip to China. She went with her son, Alex, singing "Gei Wed Yige Wen" to the public. Zhang died at 4pm on January 26, 2009 ... New Year's Day.
English Translation:
The winter jasmine children (buds) open in the first month
Everyone loves the winter jasmine (child)
The winter jasmine buds open everywhere
Good Fortune and Happiness to you
Happiness and happiness come to you
The Earth is radiant and shining
Let everyone plant the winter jasmine
Hēihēi nà hé ya hé hēi
Concerted efforts to help it grow
Everybody looks at the jasmine and loves it
Enjoy the music without worries
It is truly easy for me
To keep going ... Hey!
Mò yán āi mò yán āi
Time does not wait
we work together to plant the winter jasmine
Hey that Heyahehei
And our Flowers will always open for Spring!
