VOBLA - ROLLERCOASTER
PRESENTED BY XENJIA
The original Vobla (aka 'eat dried fish') was a plain, old-fashioned rock band, put together in Moscow in the late 1990s in the basement of the abandoned Karacharevsky lift factory. The band members were a mixed bag of local and expat musicians: Gareth Ward on vocals and guitar; Alex Nicholson on guitar; Stas Stoianov on bass; and Arthur
McCallum on drums.
Vobla gigged in dingy Moscow clubs, released an album of original material - pesnykpivu (aka songs for beer), and held a breakthrough stadium-style gig in 2001 supporting the Russian band Mumi Troll. Then, citing 'artistic differences', the band broke up and scattered to the far corners of the earth.
Like a phoenix out of the ashes, new Vobla Family Project emerged again in 2011. Changing the gritty industrial backdrop of Moscow for the sophisticated classical lines of St Petersburg, the band reformed, determined to take on a new lounge music style. The band was joined by new drummer and percussionist Dmitri Vladychenkov, bringing the
average age of the band back to a less embarrassing level.
Performing on balcony tv St Petersburg, the guys stripped their sound back down to its acoustic roots, for a new take on the song Something about the Girl.
