They are not known to spread disease, but their bites can cause itchy skin, and skin infections.
The decrease in cases of pubic lice is being attributed to better grooming, the popularity of bikini waxing, and pubic hair removal.
Like many other species, the lice are becoming endangered due to habitat destruction.
According to a 2011 study, over 80 percent of college students in the United States are choosing to trim or remove their pubic hair all together.
Doctors in one of Sydney, Australia’s sexual health clinics haven’t seen a female patient with a case of pubic lice since 2008, and cases in male patients have decreased by 80 percent.
Because the bugs don’t transmit disease, the World Health Organization does not keep statistical data on pubic lice.
