Humans are hungry to learn more about the lives of sharks, as proven by the 26 million viewers of the Discovery Channel’s legendary “Shark Week”.

Scientists at Stanford University are feeding our interest with a new app that allows you to follow some of these amazing creatures in real time. Shark Net is a free application for iPhone and iPad users and will offer you a glance at the research being done.

Fifteen tagged, great white sharks swimming in the Pacific are monitored by a series of fixed buoys near the California coast that detect when a shark is within 1,000 feet. The team has recently launched solar-powered underwater robots that have the ability to track individual shark activities. An eight day test run of one robot spotted 19 individual sharks, 200 times.

The biologists are hoping to encourage more interest in our oceans and wildlife and plan to increase the program to include other animals such as elephant seals and mako sharks.
