Shaving, plucking, waxing are some of the painful procedures women tolerate to look flawless.

However a doctor, Emily Gibson wants to curtail bikini waxing, laser hair procedures and other techniques for removing pubic hair. The fashion phenomenon, ‘Bare Down There’ is common in today’s younger population. However, Gibson claims the pubic hair removal procedures increase the risk of infection and sexually transmitted diseases. Even hospital personnel are changing their ways: shaving the genital area was once common practice for some surgeries, but nowadays hair removal is not necessary unless it is causing interference with surgery. Gibson states, “Pubic hair does have a purpose, providing a cushion against friction that can cause skin abrasion and injury, and protection from bacteria. It is time to declare a truce in the war on pubic hair and allow it to stay right where it belongs.”

Officials are cracking down on another popular beauty regimen. Earlier in June, the Chicago City Council voted in favor to banning tanning beds for people under the age of eighteen. The effort is aimed at protecting minors from skin cancer.
