Mauricio Rodriguez talks about some recent comments made by Stephen Jones, that indicate that the Dallas Cowboys could be in line to make more big trades this offseason, and possibly during the NFL Draft.
Transcript
00:00So, the Dallas Cowboys are up to three trades this offseason, and there could be more coming our way.
00:10Hey, what's up, everyone? It's Mauricio Rodriguez here at ADZ Sports Dallas.
00:14We know this offseason, the Cowboys have made plenty of moves.
00:18They've added about a dozen players, three of them they've added via trades.
00:23Cornerback Kyrie Illum, linebacker Kenneth Murray, and quarterback Joe Milton most recently.
00:29However, there could be more trades about to happen, and that's based on what Stephen Jones had to say over at 105.3, the fan, earlier in the week and leading up to the NFL draft.
00:40And by the way, if a trade does happen based on what Jones just said, it would happen before or during the NFL draft.
00:48And I say that because recently, Jones was talking about the value of draft picks in the trade market.
00:55He was asked about it specifically and about whether or not the value of those assets has risen in recent memory.
01:02Although Jones seemed to disagree that trade value for these draft picks has risen dramatically,
01:08he did say that you could get a lot of value acquiring veteran players that, for cap purposes or whatever, are about to be ousted for their teams.
01:17Now, Jones did disagree on the draft pick value being higher in recent years compared to the past.
01:24He did say that you could get a lot of value out of veterans that are being ousted from their teams for different reasons, like cap purposes.
01:32But the quote that really caught our attention was that during his answer to this question about trading draft picks,
01:39he did say, I think we've got a lot of done this offseason.
01:42And like I said, it's not over yet.
01:45We will continue to look at opportunities to help this football team.
01:48Jones also said that I do think, if anything, you can get some value in veteran type players if teams have decided they need to move on for cap reasons.
01:57There's some value out there.
01:59The fact that Jones is saying that they're not done yet and that there is some value out there,
02:03to me, suggests that they are very open and even looking into pulling off trades for their late round draft picks
02:10because they have 10 picks going into the 2025 NFL draft.
02:15Five of those are between the sixth and seventh rounds and they also have two picks in the fifth.
02:21Now, yes, you can say it's smokescreen season and all of that,
02:24but the Cowboys have been pretty straightforward with the media, at least this offseason.
02:29Earlier in the year, they talked about wanting to pull off trades and not being done.
02:33And sure enough, they went ahead and they executed such trades.
02:36Even with quarterback Joe Milton, they set the table for the trade and it happened.
02:42So simply put, I don't think they're hiding anything.
02:44I think they're just being open about some of their intentions and it makes sense.
02:49This adds up.
02:50I don't think the Cowboys are going to make 10 picks in April.
02:53At least they won't want to.
02:55At the end of the day, you got to fit these players into your roster.
02:59And I don't see the Cowboys fitting in five, seven and six rounders when it's all set.
03:05At the same time, it is going to be tricky to execute trades.
03:08Why?
03:09Because I see several routes here.
03:11Either the Cowboys want to pull off a move for a veteran player.
03:15If so, I think you're looking at that fifth rounder, maybe those sixth rounders as well
03:19to get someone that can actually be a rotational and valuable player for you during the season.
03:26The seven rounders, of which they have three, are almost irrelevant in my view,
03:31especially because at that point in the draft, the teams are just happy to wait it out
03:36and address some other players that they want to target in undrafted free agency
03:40where they have a little bit more freedom and might get away with paying less money.
03:44Sure, there are some UDFAs that end up costing more than the seven rounder,
03:48at least in terms of guaranteed money.
03:50But those are the exceptions.
03:52Those are the gems of UDFA.
03:54That is to say, I don't think the Cowboys can package three sevens
03:57and get someone that is actually going to be valuable for the roster in 2025.
04:02An alternative is maybe the Cowboys want to jump back into the fourth round, right?
04:06And they have two fifths.
04:07They have multiple six and multiple sevens.
04:10They can surely get a package done where they can jump into the fourth
04:13and suddenly they're more comfortable with what they've got in the top 100 or in the top 150.
04:20Especially because, as you know, the Cowboys are not afraid to draft based on need.
04:24Sure, there's also been instances where they take the best player available.
04:28They did so with CD Lamp back in 2020 and they've done so in other spots as well.
04:34But think about those drafts where last year, for example,
04:37they took Tyler Guyton in the first because they needed a tackle.
04:40They took Cooper Beebe in the third and asked him to play center right away,
04:44even though that's a position that was unbeknownst to him.
04:47This roster has many needs and I think they want those top four rounds to address many of them.
04:53But long story short, I expect the Cowboys to make a trade before or during the NFL draft.
04:58I think Steven Jones saying that it's not over yet is absolutely meaningful.
05:02The question to me now is, is it really going to be for a veteran
05:06or is it going to be a day three package where they climb back to the fourth round
05:10and end up with a better draft class than we expect them to?
05:14I guess we'll find out next week.
