Mauricio Rodriguez discusses why the Dallas Cowboys should look into bringing former All-Pro LT Tyron Smith back!
Transcript
00:00So it is high time the Dallas Cowboys purchase hall of fame caliber insurance policy
00:05and all they've got to do is call up an old friend.
00:12Hey what's up everyone it's Mauricio Rodriguez here at ADZ Sports Dallas on the road.
00:16We are talking Cowboys free agency today. That is right we are almost two full weeks into free
00:22agency but there is still some moves that the Cowboys could make and there is one in particular
00:28that I think would solve a problem they have yet to address would be inexpensive and it would low
00:35key be a low risk high reward type of gamble which we have established the Cowboys absolutely love.
00:43If we look at their free agency signing so far the Cowboys have addressed some problems in the
00:47trenches they've reinforced defensive tackle depth they've added some edge rushers on the
00:53offensive side of the ball they got Rob Jones to improve that interior depth in the O-line now
00:59you're going to have T.J. Voss and Rob Jones is kind of your potential swing guards in their
01:04swing tackle though remains a little bit of a question mark. I know the Cowboys have a
01:09Asim Richards he actually handled some significant snaps last season when he was rotating with Tyler
01:15Guyton and he looked pretty decent I would expect Asim Richards right now I think is a favorite
01:20swing tackle basically on the Cowboys but you could get better and with your setup with Tyler
01:25Guyton on the left side and Terrence Steele on the right side there is some risk right we have not
01:30seen Tyler Guyton take that next step and obviously we're being patient with him because he was always
01:35perceived as a project but that doesn't mean he's going to be a guarantee in his second year in the
01:40NFL and with Terrence Steele we have not seen his best football in a long while even though he
01:46improved at the later stages of the 2024 season so this brings me to the proposal of buying some
01:52insurance policy and I'm talking about none other than Tyron Smith let's recap what happened last
01:58year when the Cowboys allowed Tyron Smith to hit free agency at the time I was very critical of the
02:05decision why because I agreed the Cowboys needed a long-term project at left tackle and I agreed
02:11they had to start planning for the future however when the Cowboys put themselves in a position
02:17where they didn't have a left tackle it was always going to have to be a project like Guyton and the
02:24problem with that for me was you're not going to have quality tackle play on the blind side
02:30protecting Dak Prescott and that's essentially what ended up happening so my argument at the time was
02:36let's pay Tyron Smith still draft somebody in the first round and have Smith be that rich player
02:43while your rookie develops and maybe it would take a whole year maybe it would have taken until week
02:48nine or maybe Tyron Smith would have suffered an injury like he did with the New York Jets but at
02:53least by that time your rookie had developed a little bit more and had had more time to really
02:59translate into the pros what I am proposing in 2025 however is a little bit different I am not
03:05going to argue to stop Guyton's development and send him to the bench I think that would be a
03:10mistake you're now a team that is looking into the future that is building for the next four years
03:16you're not precisely in win now mode like maybe you were last year so instead why not see
03:23Tyron Smith as a backup and as an insurance policy if you sign him on the chip which I think
03:29that's what he's going to sign for at the end of the day he's 34 years old he had another neck
03:34injury that ended his 2024 season and only played 10 games he should be cheap and you might get away
03:41with an incentive heavy deal with incentives that he's not likely to earn because he's going to be
03:47a backup but he would serve two purposes number one he would be one of the best backups in the
03:52entire NFL hands down he might be far from his prime but if Tyron Smith is your backup left
03:57tackle you are in a good spot my friend and number two he's going to be insurance policy
04:03in the event that Tyler Guyton doesn't progress now I'm not saying that's my expectation but I'm
04:10saying that is a risk that right now the Cowboys are taking on Guyton had his moments as a rookie
04:16but also he had some very very bad moments and was even benched by the Cowboys multiple times
04:21because of penalties among other things if for any reason you need someone to step in for Guyton
04:27man I would love for that to be Tyron Smith now granted this might not only be a Cowboys decision
04:32right because Smith might get himself a market he might be one of those free agents that is going
04:37to wait until the beginning of the season to see if any injuries pop up and then maybe his
04:42price is raised or he also might even consider retirement right he's at that stage of his career
04:48where that is an option every single year so we'll see how it all plays out but if Tyron Smith
04:53is interested in playing football again I think the Cowboys should absolutely be calling him up
