00:00Who do you think you are? I am! I'm here with a legend, Pete Webber. I mean, perhaps one of the
00:09most exciting boulders that's ever lived. Personality. He's won over 50 events. I mean,
00:15only a couple of people have done that. And he's joined on Frank's Walks. Pete, let's go for a walk.
00:30Frank Walks. It's time for Frank Walks. Let's do it. Now, that moment, the anniversary of that just
00:40passed. Yeah, it was actually, it was yesterday on Facebook. We, I saw it on air. And yeah,
00:50that's kind of a new, new thing. I thought it died, you know, a few years after it happened.
00:57And then all of a sudden, last year, it came right back up. And it was like,
01:01wow, this is pretty cool. Well, it probably is the most famous moment in history of
01:08professional bowling. Well, they, they say it's the greatest shot in bowling.
01:15I guess I'm humble like my dad. It was just another shot, you know, but I, I really enjoyed
01:23it, you know, and it got me a record. It let me pass Don Carter and Dick Webber in
01:30U.S. Open or All-Star titles. And of course, Dick Webber is your father. So it was like. Yeah,
01:38we're down here on that Del Mar Loop. And I thought a star was, we were going to pass a star, but
01:45haven't. I've been looking, I haven't seen it yet. So maybe it's at the other end.
01:51It's got to be around here somewhere. Yeah, it is. But I like this. They have all the stars here,
01:58people that played in St. Louis, famous people. Yeah, all the famous people from St. Louis.
02:03If they're somebody, then they get a star. Even in actually Florissant, where we grew up,
02:11where dad had his bowling center and lived and I grew up,
02:15uh, St. Francis Street in Florissant has a walk of fame for people from Florissant.
02:21And I'm waiting for the mayor to get ahold of me and give me my star right next to dad. So,
02:26you know, that'd be great. Uh, now bowling. I mean, you think of this as being kind of like a,
02:33like a leisurely game, but when you did it, you brought up the intensity. You brought up
02:37the personality. Yeah. And yeah, like kind of like a professional wrestling, like personality.
02:44Well, you know, I, I've always been rebel. You know, you tell me not to do it. I do it,
02:51you know, period. But you know, it's, uh, when the new guys from Microsoft bought the PBA
02:58back in the early two thousands, they hired Steve Miller from, uh, from Nike and to be the
03:04commissioner. And he pretty much gave us free reign at what we wanted to do on TV. So he said,
03:11just do whatever you want. You won't get fined. Well, I think it helps the sport. I think it
03:15helps bring personality. I mean, the more personality that comes out, I think it helps
03:20bowling. Now you've bowled was 85 perfect games in competition.
03:28It could be, I'm not real sure anymore. I was probably added to that. Um, but, uh, I have over
03:36150. I'm not even real sure how many perfect games I have anymore. So, I mean, I know personally,
03:43I think I've, my highest was might've been 130. Did you have fun? Yes. That's all the matter
03:50right there. It's been a long time, but when you're bowling and you make these seven, 10 splits,
04:00what's that feel like? First off, you get that situation where you just had the seven and 10
04:05pins sitting at you and you think you had this great shot, but then you make that seven, 10 split.
04:10What's that feel like when you leave it or when you hit it, when you hit a seven, 10 split? Oh,
04:17it's just like, Hey, all right. Wow. I did it, you know, because it's a shot that it's really a split.
04:24That's there's no way really to make it. You have to get lucky a little bit and have the pin bounce
04:31out of the back and take out the other pin. But when you do make it, it's actually, it's like,
04:38it's almost like an astonishment, you know, it's almost like, Oh my God, I made it, you know? So,
04:44but it's, it's a fun feeling. I mean, some of the things I was looking at you, your father was
04:52a big name too. He was at, uh, helped out by Budweiser and, uh, Amizer Bush. And if I'm not
04:59mistaken, I read that he actually went bowling on an airplane. Yeah. Uh, Oh, I,
05:07Oh shoot. I forgot. I'm not remembering the lady's name, uh, that he bowled against, but yeah,
05:14they bowled in a seven Oh seven. I think it was, they built one lane in the airplane and,
05:23uh, on the ground, I think they, in the practice game that they bowled, they both shot like 250.
05:30And then when they got up in the air, the score was one 54 to one 53 or something like that.
05:39But it was kind of funny. Cause dad told me that the pilot and co-pilot had a bet.
05:44So every time the pilot knew dad was up, he would tilt the plane just a little bit.
05:51To where the ball took a little more time getting down the lane. So, you know,
05:58I think he's not supposed to probably supposed to be here, but that's what the altitude will do
06:03for you. You're hitting the curb, but what would you say your greatest moment in bowling was,
06:11was it that famous video? Oh, yes. That one would be one of them. Uh,
06:21probably the most famous would be that way. And, uh, you know, because I was just flying high right
06:32there at the moment after winning. And I, I really wanted to say, who the fuck are you messing around
06:38with me in my house, but it's with the adrenaline going, it just came out. Who do you think you are?
06:45I am. And it became a real famous quote, but my other one is the Eagle has landed when I had the
06:53trophy and it kind of fell down on the approach and broke into a hundred thousand pieces. So
06:59I have a couple. I saw another one where you're like the guy, this guy's trying to get his like
07:04first major title. And it's like, you're not getting out of me. Oh, it's against Michael
07:09Fagan. Yeah. I remember that. Yeah. And he started it. Everybody thinks I started that
07:14trash talking stuff and he started it. He he's, I was just sitting there and he walked off the
07:21approach and looked at me and he's like, come on, man. It's on now. Really? And that's all it took
07:27for me. So I went crazy and told him he, after I beat him, he ain't getting your first one against
07:34me. Now you won the U.S. Open more times than any other bowler from what I understand. Yeah. Is that
07:40the most prestigious event? I believe it is. Um, if you ask any of the other pros too, that
07:49they'll say the U.S. Open is the most coveted title that we have because it's the hardest title to win.
07:57You know, it's like the U.S. Open in golf. Don't miss the fairway or you're not going to make par
08:02or you're going to scramble to do that. In the U.S. Open, it's take advantage of the pairs you can
08:08and leave something that you can make. Now you've moved on now. You're now in the,
08:14the uh, senior tour and now on the uh, the 50 and the 60. Yeah. From what I understand.
08:21What is the state of bowling today?
08:25In the seniors? On the whole sport, across the whole sport. Well, the, the kids are bowling for
08:31a lot of money right now and they're, they're thriving. They're, you know, they're making good
08:36livings at it. The senior tours, you know, it's a little harder to make a living out there. The
08:42prize funds aren't as much. Um, our major titles now, they're paying pretty good. I think they're
08:49paying like $20,000 or so for senior major titles and then the rest of the tournaments.
08:56Because it seems like bowling is starting to make a little bit of a comeback.
09:00And uh, people, more people are starting to bowl again after being kind of down for a number of
09:06years. Oh, well, I, I think it's becoming more recreational anymore that uh, families are doing
09:16it and all the bowling centers anymore are becoming family entertainment centers with the
09:22laser tag and the big games rooms. The night bowling. It's just, yeah, the, the uh, moonlight
09:31bowling, disco bowling or whatever. I know Bolero has been very big. Oh, everybody's big on that.
09:38They have it everywhere around here too. Yeah, I got a, I got a Bolero uh, right in my hometown
09:43Belleville uh, New Jersey. Yeah. Right next to uh, to the uh, McDonald's.
09:53But I see you're a big fan of the Cardinals. Oh yeah, I, I, you know, I, it's easy to be a coach
10:02sitting at home, you know, and decide what you need to do. But I'm a diehard Cardinal fan. I,
10:09I root for them win, lose. It seems like they look like killed, you know, it seems like they're
10:14committed to doing a rebuild and it's been a long time since the Cardinals have actually
10:18truly like went through a rebuild. Well, I, I don't know, you know, I'm in this off season. I
10:26really didn't. We got rid of Goldschmidt and went to the Yankees. Yep. Wow. Well, I'm, I'm, I'm a
10:36fan. There as he was here. I mean, we, we loved him here. And Aronado looks like he's probably
10:43going to, he's our big player now, Aronado. But it looks like, it looks like they're committed
10:48to trading him eventually. It's just, they got to find the right taker. Yeah. But I mean,
10:57we're looking at prospects down in our, our farm club and then, uh,
11:02uh, we're, uh, we're not really spending any money. So I, you know, like I say,
11:09it's real easy to be a coach at home and instead of being in the, in the organization.
11:15But they've been successful for me for years. Yeah, they have been, uh, last few years have
11:21been a little, a little hard on them with injuries and things, but you know, it's, uh,
11:27it's still, you know, it's a new year. Uh, do you never know, you know, spring training.
11:36One thing the Cardinals have is they've always had a good farm system.
11:40Yeah. There's a guy that's a famous baseball player from my neck of the woods.
11:45He ended up, but from St. Louis. Yes. The, uh, I went to Montgomery state, New Jersey,
11:53the baseball stadium at Montgomery state is Yogi Berra stadium and the Yogi Berra museum
11:59is actually located on the campus of, uh, my, uh, alma mater. Yeah. Joe Garagiola.
12:07They're actually best friends. They grew up in the same neighborhood.
12:11You tie there's like a, the hill, I think they called it in St. Louis. Yeah. They, uh,
12:17both from St. Louis and both were Yankees. That's all right. Well,
12:23Gargiola played for the Cardinals. He never really played for the Yankees. He was an announcer for
12:27the Yankees. So, but, uh, of course I'm wearing the St. Louis Browns jersey. I see that. I see
12:34that. Yeah. Our old, old baseball team got chased out by the Cardinals. I mean, the Browns had some
12:46misfortune. They made the only one went to one world series and they played the Cardinals.
12:53Of course. And that was at the old stadium too. Sportsman's park. Yeah.
13:00No, I wasn't old enough to be able to go to that park, but I, I was at, uh, all I've been at all
13:07with Bush stadium. So it's kind of neat. Of course the Mets had that big rivalry in the eighties.
13:12Oh yeah. Yeah. You called the Mets pond scum. Pond scum. Yeah. I, that was our fact. That was
13:20our Casey 95 radio station here in St. Louis. I think where they came up with that. I just have
13:28no idea where they came up. I don't know, but I, I know that the, uh, the Mets were like, uh,
13:33it was like, uh, I was just watching the Mets game one time and Dow Strawberry was in the booth
13:37with Keith Denandis. And they're talking about that and he goes, well, and now who actually now
13:43has his ministry in St. Louis basically said, well, Keith, we were pond scum.
13:54Which is probably one of the funniest lines ever. Yeah. But, uh, I hope you have continued success.
14:01I mean, when I think about bowling, I think about you. And, uh, of course we're in the same
14:07fantasy league together too. Oh yeah. In fact, uh, my daughter just took my wife home to get
14:13her chair. And, uh, she's the one, I'm the owner of the fantasy football team. She does all the
14:19picking and stuff. So I had the greatest choke job ever for a championship game this year in that
14:26league where I benched Patrick Mahomes in a championship game for thinking that,
14:34uh, I forgot who I started, but, and then I picked up the Colts defense because the Giants defense
14:42the other week gave up 40 points because they had, they gave up three pick sixes. So I took
14:49the Colts defense that day. And that day the Giants decided to score 50 points on the Colts.
14:54And I ended up losing like by a hundred points in the championship game. I benched, I benched.
15:02I benched. Yeah. In fact, I benched, uh, Patrick Mahomes. I think I might've hit
15:08started Brock Brody and Brock Brody ended up getting hurt and like taken out of the game.
15:12It was like just a total disaster. Yeah. And I thought that, Hey, did, did we do better? And
15:20nope. But better luck next year. You guys are in the league. You guys get a championship. I don't,
15:26you have one, right? You have a championship in that league?
15:30Uh, no, I lost the championship game last two years. The fantasy football. Yes. Hey, we've,
15:35I think we finished in the top five this year. So that, you know, that was a big
15:40improvement over last year. Yeah. Two straight, two straight second places. All right. Well,
15:46thank you. And, uh, hope you have a great season this year on the tour. All right,
15:50Frank. Thank you so much. Appreciate it, man.
