00:00Honor Murray didn't get the chance to show off his true talents in the Kentucky Derby
00:05when a troubled start kept him out of contention.
00:08But trainer Witt Beckman is hoping that it will be a different story come Belmont Stakes
00:12Day.
00:13We tagged along with Honor Murray for a morning of training at Churchill Downs a few days
00:16before he ships out to Saratoga.
00:19Derby he came out extremely well, surprisingly well, but it was kind of one of those things
00:23like as soon as the gates open I saw that I knew our chances were gone.
00:27From the four over and then from the 12 they all just kind of crashed right into him.
00:34He couldn't really get out of it the first like three strides he was just getting jostled
00:37around so bad and you know he never really wanted to be all the way out the back but
00:40at that point you know it was kind of where we just ended up by default.
00:45At no point in the race did he ever get like really 100 cleared yards to run and same thing
00:49down the lane as well a couple horses tiring stopping in front of him so he was weaving
00:53bobbing moving and you know ended up finishing eighth we were real proud of him I mean he
00:57is you know a horse that's always put in like maximum effort and you know despite not
01:02really getting any room to run he did a you know I was real I was real happy with it.
01:08The experience and the day and just having kind of the way everything unfolded was just
01:11a beautiful day you know really a lot of fun a lot of family friends I mean honestly like
01:17the moments after the race were probably the best moments I had all week you know he got
01:20in the derby he tried and just being in that spot was you know incredible.
01:25I would have run him in the Belmont even if it was a mile and a half he's got the kind
01:27of pedigree that you know should stay for those type distances but at this mile and
01:31a quarter I think he's you know he's among the top three-year-olds and I do believe that
01:36he he's got a great shot to kind of turn it around and you know if he gets a clean trip
01:40you know show up on the day he's been training so good since the derby so really excited.
01:44This is my first horse I'm running in New York I actually ran horses in California before
01:48I ran anything in New York so it's all the years I spent up there it's kind of cool it's
01:51kind of feels like I'm going home in a sense because I mean a lot of my you know early
01:56days on the racetrack were spent in Saratoga.
01:59The first time I went to Saratoga I went to work for Todd Fletcher just being up there
02:04was just you know everybody's geared towards the racetrack it's a community it's like totally
02:08integrated with the horses so I'm excited to head back up.
02:12We just started like less than three years ago and you know you're kind of struggle and
02:16you always kind of wonder which you know at the end of the day it's like one horse can
02:19make the difference between you know one level to the next and you know we feel like
02:23he's always been that type of horse you know he's I think waiting on his day to really
02:29put himself in the you know the big spots but I know it's coming he's just he's so talented
02:34and one of the things you can't really train is a trier to put everything on the line and
02:38that's all I could ask for but yeah he's I'm lucky to have him.
