National security advisor Michael Waltz discusses the Trump administration's fight with a district judge over the deportation of suspected Tren de Aragua gang members and the phone call with President Putin on a possible ceasefire agreement. Fox News contributor Dan Hoffman also joined 'America's Newsroom' to discuss President Donald Trump's negotiations with Russian President Putin on the Ukraine war and why he believes the U.S. should tread lightly with peace talks. #FoxNews

00:00So, President Trump standing firm on his promise to get migrant gang members out of our country
00:06despite pushback from a U.S. district judge.
00:10He actually said we shouldn't be able to take criminals, killers, murderers, horrible, the
00:16worst people, gang members, gang leaders, that we shouldn't be allowed to take them
00:20out of our country.
00:21Well, that's a presidential job.
00:23That's not for a local judge to be making that determination.
00:27So the administration has until noon today to respond to the judge's questions on the
00:30deportation flights of the alleged members of Trinidad y Agua, the Venezuelan gang.
00:36They are now in El Salvador.
00:38TDA is one of the gangs and cartels the State Department designated as foreign terrorist
00:43organizations.
00:44Here to discuss, National Security Advisor Colonel Michael Waltz.
00:48Colonel, thanks so much for joining the program.
00:51Good to be with you.
00:52So, tell me, I mean, I don't know if a lot of Americans realize, but as a former Green
00:56Beret, you know this, we've targeted these cartels before.
01:01The president really doesn't need to declare war to go after them, right?
01:06No, that's right.
01:09And Lawrence, you know, let's go back in time a bit.
01:11I can remember when people were trying to arrest Osama bin Laden and were trying to
01:17arrest Al Qaeda and, you know, debating whether they had the evidentiary standards to get
01:25them through due process here in the United States, which is a very high bar.
01:31We need to perhaps start thinking about these terrorists like what they are, which is terrorists.
01:37Unfortunately, we had 9-11 to begin thinking about Al Qaeda like the terrorists that they
01:43are.
01:44Trinidad y Agua has been labeled a terrorist organization.
01:48They are no different than ISIS.
01:51They maim, kill, torture, create mayhem and chaos on our streets in the United States.
01:59And I think if you had some of those, you know, tattooed, shaved head men labeled ISIS,
02:04then we wouldn't even be having this debate.
02:07So this is about a wholesale shift on what a terrorist is and how they should be treated
02:13in the United States, how they should be treated when they're attacking our soil and when they're
02:18violating our sovereignty and when they're terrorizing our citizens.
02:22And of course, that is going to present an article two, article three in the constitution
02:28conflict.
02:29But really that's, that's what this is.
02:31And this is squarely under the commander in chief's authority to keep Americans safe.
02:36And I'm telling you, that's how most Americans see it.
02:38So Colonel, you would never give those operation details to a judge if you were going after
02:43Osama bin Laden.
02:45They're obviously trying to get you to give that information over about these terrorists.
02:50Now I want to move on to the big call with Putin yesterday, apparently it was a 90 minute
02:54conversations.
02:55There are some reports out there that said that he kept the president waiting.
03:00I don't think that's true based on my sources.
03:02What can you tell us?
03:04Completely false, garbage, fake news.
03:06You know, there's, this is between two heads of state, a major call.
03:12There's a, you know, sometimes some technical difficulties.
03:16The call started on time and it lasted for a very long time and both presidents covered
03:22a lot of ground from the future of bilateral relationships, keeping, you know, stabilizing
03:29the region to solving this problem in Ukraine, ending this war, stopping the killing.
03:36They went into some operational details of the fighting.
03:40They went into a big picture on how to implement the ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, people
03:46that are being detained.
03:48They covered a lot, a lot of ground.
03:51But I could tell you Donald J. Trump does not sit and wait for an hour for any head
03:56of state.
03:57But look, this was, this was an important historic call that only president Trump could
04:03pull both sides together.
04:05He's going from one side to the other.
04:07Our negotiators are going from one side to the other and we are driving both sides closer
04:12and closer.
04:13Lawrence, even the NATO secretary general of NATO said, president Trump, you broke the
04:19log jam and everybody agrees now.
04:23It's not if the war ends, we're debating how the war ends.
04:26So real quickly, Colonel, before I let you go, you're in a unique position because you
04:29did used to be a Green Beret.
04:31You've kicked down a lot of doors of some bad guys, but you've also had to work with
04:35some bad guys for the interest of America.
04:38So what did you make of the call?
04:40Do you believe that Putin was an honest broker?
04:43Could you believe what he said when he promised the president that they may be able to come
04:48to an agreement here?
04:49Well, it's not a matter of whether you necessarily believe.
04:54This is trust, but verify.
04:56This is tough negotiation.
04:58Putin's a tough character.
05:00We have no illusions about who we're dealing with.
05:03But both sides, it's in their interest to end the killing, to end the massive loss of
05:09lives and treasure and materiel, and play this forward a year, two, three years.
05:16How does this end except World War I style grinding warfare with World War III escalation
05:22consequences?
05:23It's in all sides' interest to stop it, and that's what we're driving towards.
05:28Colonel Michael Waltz, National Security Advisor, former Green Beret, thank you, sir.
05:34Today, I will have contact with President Trump.
05:37We have already had a really good meeting of our teams in Jeddah.
05:40I think everything went right, and I think I will hear from him the details of his conversation
05:46with Putin today.
05:47That's Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that was earlier today, saying he plans to
05:51call President Trump today, and that comes after Trump says he secured a partial ceasefire
05:56deal with Russia's President Putin.
05:59We had a great call.
06:00It lasted almost two hours, talked about a lot of things, and toward getting it to peace,
06:05and we talked about other things also.
06:07Was there non-negotiables mentioned by Putin?
06:10It was reported that, I think the Kremlin media actually stated that he demanded an
06:15immediate cessation of aid to Ukraine in order to get to this multi-step deal.
06:22No, he didn't.
06:23We didn't talk about aid, actually.
06:24We didn't talk about aid at all.
06:26Dan Hoffman, the former CIA Station Chief and a Fox News contributor, I want you to
06:30listen here to Michael Walls, he's the President's National Security Advisor.
06:33Lawrence Jones asked if they can trust Putin.
06:38This is trust, but verify.
06:40This is tough negotiation.
06:42Putin's a tough character.
06:43We have no illusions about who we're dealing with.
06:46But both sides, it's in their interest to end the killing, to end the massive loss of
06:53lives.
06:54Dan, where do you see this?
06:55Are we sort of at square one in this discussion, or are we farther down the road?
07:00I think we're closer to the beginning than the end, and I would just suggest for everyone's
07:05consideration that we mistrust and verify when it comes to Vladimir Putin.
07:09Look, Putin could have agreed to a full ceasefire yesterday, just as Zelensky has, but he didn't.
07:16He wants to create the image of being an affable leader of Russia who is willing to negotiate
07:21on things like hockey games.
07:24But his red line is that he still wants to subjugate Ukraine.
07:28And the will of the Ukrainian people is such that they want to fight back.
07:32They want to be an independent state.
07:34And Putin wants to do everything he can to destroy them.
07:38And there's no indication that he's changed that strategic objective.
07:42He'll make tactical moves in the near term.
07:45This immediate ceasefire on energy and on infrastructure is good for Ukraine, but it's
07:51good for Russia, because Ukraine has been taking the fight inside Russia to their oil
07:56and gas facilities to try to limit Russia's revenues, which they use to launch their attacks
08:03against Ukraine.
08:04Dan, a week ago, President Trump was asked what would happen, perhaps, if Putin doesn't
08:09agree.
08:10This is what he said.
08:11But in a financial sense, yeah, we could do things very bad for Russia, would be devastating
08:16for Russia.
08:17But I don't want to do that because I want to see peace.
08:20So it looks like that might not be on the table right now, but it is something in the
08:24toolkit.
08:25The other thing is that Russia has been utilizing these North Korean soldiers who plucked out
08:30of North Korea, put on the front lines.
08:32And so the killings are not necessarily just the Russians, right?
08:36He doesn't, I don't think Putin probably cares that much about the lives of the North Koreans.
08:40No, he doesn't care about Russians either.
08:44He alone is responsible for hundreds of thousands of Russian casualties, not to mention all
08:48of the innocent Ukrainians whom he has killed, as well.
08:53Those are just statistics to Vladimir Putin, just as they were to Stalin.
08:57For Putin, all that matters is staying in power and his regime's security in the Kremlin.
09:01And he cannot allow Ukraine to enjoy commercial and diplomatic relations with the West.
09:08And so he wants to end that.
09:10But you're right.
09:11He's been boosted by North Korean soldiers and artillery, Iranian drones, as well as
09:16export market for his hydrocarbons to China.
09:19He's not talking about giving that up when he's demanding that the West not provide Ukraine
09:24with the armaments they would need to deter a future Russian attack.
09:27A last word, if you would, on the idea that Putin would want to drive a further wedge,
09:33if possible, between the United States and Ukraine.
09:38I think that's one of Putin's goals.
09:40He wants to ensure that he exacts as many concessions as he can from the West, and he
09:45wants to be able in the future to attack Ukraine.
09:48He wants a bad deal for Ukraine, to drive a wedge not just between the United States
09:52and Ukraine, but also between the United States and our European allies.
09:56Putin knows that we enjoy $1 trillion worth of trade with Europe, and he wants to interfere
10:02with that.
10:03Listen, going back to his KGB days, the United States is Russia's main enemy, glavniy pratyvnyk.
10:10Because everything we stand for, democracy, freedom and liberty, everything enshrined
10:13in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, that's what scares Putin the most.
10:17Dan Hoffman, thank you for joining us today as we, as you say, are more at the beginning
10:21than the middle of this process.
10:22Thanks.
10:23Thanks.
