00:00:00Tonight, on Dateline.
00:00:05The Wolf Pack is our group of friends in Silver Lakes.
00:00:09They called each other Bear and Pooter.
00:00:11I don't see any breathing.
00:00:14No, I don't see nothing, I think he's dead.
00:00:17I started thinking, who would want Rob out of the picture?
00:00:20This case had sex, religion, it literally had everything.
00:00:26The story of an it couple behind Dateline's hit podcast.
00:00:31Sabrina and Rob had invited another married couple
00:00:33into their group for an open relationship.
00:00:37She couldn't stay away from him.
00:00:38Good morning, my lover.
00:00:40Well, good morning.
00:00:42They talked about God.
00:00:43God is so good.
00:00:45Yeah, God is so good.
00:00:47Did you and Ms. Lamone and her husband and your husband
00:00:52engage in sexual activity together?
00:00:55That was the bombshell of all bombshells.
00:00:58No one could look away.
00:01:00You just couldn't look away.
00:01:03Was someone doing God's work or the devil's?
00:01:06I'm Lester Holt, and this is Dateline.
00:01:17Here's Josh Mankiewicz with Deadly Mirage.
00:01:22Trackless, dry, and desolate, the Mojave Desert
00:01:26fits almost no one's image of the California lifestyle.
00:01:31Unless, that is, you stumble upon this little oasis,
00:01:35Silver Lakes, a community of 6,000, improbably built
00:01:40in the desert on the water.
00:01:44The lakes are artificial, of course.
00:01:46The houses look solid enough, stuck up
00:01:49and red tile, along with churches, a golf course,
00:01:53and parks for the kids.
00:01:56Wholesome anywhere Main Street, USA.
00:01:59But what if that's a mirage, too?
00:02:02Turns out, behind some of these doors, there are secrets
00:02:07about religion, about friendship, about sex,
00:02:12and about murder.
00:02:14Rob and Sabrina Limon were just one of those magical couples.
00:02:19You wanted to invite them to every barbecue you had,
00:02:22and you wanted to make it to every barbecue,
00:02:24or every time they were going to go out on the lake.
00:02:28And they attracted people around them like that.
00:02:31Friends Kelly and Jason Bernatine
00:02:33told me the Limons were irresistible.
00:02:36They had two beautiful kids, and they were
00:02:39just so much fun, and they were so much fun.
00:02:42They had two beautiful kids, and a great family,
00:02:45and just always happy.
00:02:48Aw, that's so sweet.
00:02:51How are they along with each other?
00:02:52Oh, gosh.
00:02:55They never fought.
00:02:56They were like, they called each other bear, and pooter,
00:03:00and hugs, and kisses, and high fives all the time.
00:03:03Just happy, happy, happy.
00:03:06Their happiness was all the sweeter,
00:03:09because Rob's own parents had split up
00:03:11when he was a child, Rob's older sister, Chris Wilson.
00:03:15Divorce is hard on kids, and it was hard on my brother.
00:03:19Mom worked a lot of nights, being a single mom.
00:03:23So I would take care of Robert.
00:03:25After graduating high school, Rob lived with Chris
00:03:28here in Prescott, Arizona.
00:03:30It's where he met Sabrina.
00:03:32Just about everyone called her Brina.
00:03:35He brought her to our home and introduced us.
00:03:40And he said, I think I'm going to marry her.
00:03:43Chris could tell this was serious.
00:03:46She loved my brother, and I could tell she did.
00:03:50Rob adored both Sabrina and her family,
00:03:53says Lydia Morero, another of Rob's sisters.
00:03:56They were very warm and welcoming.
00:03:59And they did things together, and that's
00:04:01what he wanted for himself and his family.
00:04:04Rob and Sabrina married in a beautiful church wedding
00:04:08on August 19, 2000.
00:04:11Rob thought about becoming a firefighter,
00:04:14then landed a job as a mechanic for a railroad company.
00:04:18He loved his job.
00:04:19Just like everything he did, he put 110% into it.
00:04:23He'd always take pictures of himself at work
00:04:26and see the trains in the background,
00:04:29Robert with his thumb up, and just enjoy life.
00:04:35Sabrina and Rob settled in small town
00:04:38Hellendale, California, in a community called Silver Lakes.
00:04:43Some people call it the happiest place in the high desert.
00:04:47Their house was on Strawberry Lane.
00:04:50They had two beautiful children, Robbie and Leanna,
00:04:54almost three years apart.
00:04:57Kelly was a hairdresser in town.
00:05:00That's how she and Sabrina met.
00:05:02She made an appointment, came in,
00:05:05was super nice, friendly, like over-the-top friendly.
00:05:11I did her hair.
00:05:12She told me about her family.
00:05:14She talked to me the whole time, nonstop.
00:05:17She was hard to resist.
00:05:18Yeah, she was.
00:05:20Kelly was married to Jason, a firefighter.
00:05:23Soon, the Lamones invited them over for dinner.
00:05:26You remember that first dinner?
00:05:27Yeah, I remember the first time I met Rob.
00:05:29He's actually kind of a scary dude.
00:05:31He's really big.
00:05:32He's got tattoos all over his arm.
00:05:34He's got his last name tattooed on the back of his head.
00:05:38So his appearance was not like his personality.
00:05:41It only took a minute to realize he was
00:05:43the nicest guy in the world.
00:05:45Jason and Rob became fast friends.
00:05:48So did Kelly and Sabrina.
00:05:51We used to joke that sunshine was coming out of their butts.
00:05:55They were such happy people.
00:05:57And you just wanted to be around them.
00:06:00The four became inseparable.
00:06:02They would often get together with a handful
00:06:04of other young couples.
00:06:06They all called themselves the Wolf Pack.
00:06:09It's a big group when we all get together.
00:06:11And our little pups run around, too.
00:06:15The Wolf Pack spent just about every holiday and birthday
00:06:19together.
00:06:21But one couple was always the center of gravity, Sabrina
00:06:25and Rob Lamone.
00:06:27I would look at Rob, and I would watch him with Sabrina.
00:06:31And I'd be like, that's the guy that I need to be like.
00:06:36And all the wives would look at Rob,
00:06:39and it was hard to compare it to him.
00:06:41Yeah, everybody would be like, why can't you be more like Rob?
00:06:44Be more like Rob.
00:06:45That's what everybody said.
00:06:47And as a guy, you're just like, I can never be like that.
00:06:52On August 11, 2014, Rob turned 38.
00:06:56He celebrated his birthday with his family and his Wolf Pack
00:07:00friends.
00:07:03And then, just a week later, everything went off the rails.
00:07:08Rob was working the day shift at an isolated railroad office
00:07:12in Tehachapi, about 90 miles from Hellendale.
00:07:16Sabrina worked part-time passing out samples at Costco.
00:07:20And the couple often talked or texted during the day.
00:07:24This day was no exception.
00:07:26Call me, Bear.
00:07:27I'm home now.
00:07:28Getting the kids dinner and ready for school, yay.
00:07:31But Rob didn't respond.
00:07:33And he didn't call on the way home, as he almost always did.
00:07:38Sabrina texted him again.
00:07:40Babe, I'm worried about you.
00:07:41Call me.
00:07:42Leanna wants to say goodnight.
00:07:46That was a little after 8 PM.
00:07:48Rob Lamone never did call.
00:07:51Instead, this call came in.
00:07:53Tell me exactly what happened.
00:07:55I had opened the garage door, and there's
00:07:57a light bulb busted out.
00:07:59He's on the ground, bleeding out of his head.
00:08:02OK.
00:08:03Oh, my God.
00:08:06What had happened when we returned?
00:08:09I looked at her sister, and I said, is it true?
00:08:12An apparent burglary and a mystery.
00:08:15We didn't know what was going on.
00:08:17It didn't make a lot of sense.
00:08:26It didn't take long for bad news to spread in Silver Lakes.
00:08:31Kelly Bernatine got the call in the middle of the night
00:08:34and immediately drove to Sabrina's home.
00:08:37She comes to the door, but she was wearing a railroad jacket.
00:08:41And little Leanna was wearing a railroad jacket
00:08:43and holding a picture of her dad.
00:08:45And then she said something like, oh, my Kelly.
00:08:49And she just said, oh, my Kelly.
00:08:51And she said, oh, my Kelly.
00:08:54Oh, my Kelly.
00:08:55And she just reached her arms out and fell on me and cried.
00:08:59And then I looked at her sister, and I said, is it true?
00:09:03And she said, yeah.
00:09:04And then I just cried.
00:09:07It was true.
00:09:09Big Rob Lamone, the nicest guy in the world,
00:09:12had been shot to death at work.
00:09:15But I still didn't believe that.
00:09:20Because Rob was so strong, and I couldn't believe it.
00:09:26Sabrina's older sister, Julie Cordova,
00:09:28says they were both stunned.
00:09:30She was crying and just pacing and trying
00:09:36to be strong for the kids all at the same time.
00:09:39So I laid with Sabrina that night and rubbed her head.
00:09:43There was hardly any information at that point.
00:09:45We didn't know what happened.
00:09:47Nightmare.
00:09:48We didn't know what was going on.
00:09:51It didn't make a lot of sense.
00:09:54Making sense out of Rob's murder was
00:09:56the job of Kern County Sheriff's Detective Randall Meyer.
00:10:00He got the call and headed for the industrial complex
00:10:02in Tehachapi, where Rob was working
00:10:05on the last day of his life.
00:10:07Do you like crime in Tehachapi?
00:10:08Not typically.
00:10:10A co-worker called 911 after finding Rob's body
00:10:14and seeing the blood inside the shop.
00:10:16Do you see any breathing?
00:10:18No, I don't see nothing.
00:10:20I think he's dead.
00:10:21It appeared that he'd been shot twice.
00:10:23Once to the upper right chest, and again
00:10:26to the left lower chin, which meant Rob had been
00:10:30facing his killer when he died.
00:10:33Detective Meyer inspected the crime scene.
00:10:36One of the computers from the desk was missing.
00:10:38And several drawers were open.
00:10:40And there were files that were strewn about the office.
00:10:44It looked like a burglary, an odd place for one
00:10:47because it was a railroad warehouse.
00:10:49No cash normally kept here.
00:10:52There were tools and train parts,
00:10:54but not much a thief could easily fence.
00:10:57And what's more.
00:10:59Burglars usually don't kill people.
00:11:00It's only in TV do shootouts happen
00:11:02as the result of somebody interrupting a burglary.
00:11:04Usually the burglar runs out of there
00:11:06as quickly as possible.
00:11:08Yeah, that's correct.
00:11:09There was something else that didn't fit
00:11:12the burglary theory.
00:11:13We did not locate any shell casings on the ground.
00:11:16Meaning he was either shot with a revolver
00:11:17or someone was careful enough to pick up
00:11:21the shell casings afterwards, which would suggest what?
00:11:25If that's the case.
00:11:27Would suggest that they had planned
00:11:29and prepared to commit the murder.
00:11:34Rob's killer did leave behind a critical piece of evidence.
00:11:37A bullet lodged in Rob's head.
00:11:41That went to the crime lab
00:11:42while Meyer rethought the case.
00:11:45After looking at the scene,
00:11:47we thought that somebody was upset with Rob
00:11:49and was looking for him.
00:11:52Soon there was reason to doubt that theory too.
00:11:55After the detective spoke with Rob's coworkers.
00:11:58They told me that Rob Lamone was a very kind,
00:12:01loving person, a good friend.
00:12:04He was somebody who would help anybody out
00:12:07if they needed help at any point in time.
00:12:09Good guy.
00:12:10Good guy.
00:12:11And everybody said that he never had a problem
00:12:13with anyone at work.
00:12:16Which raised yet another possibility.
00:12:18Maybe Rob was not the intended target.
00:12:22A check of the schedule revealed
00:12:24Rob was covering someone else's shift that day.
00:12:27A coworker named Corey Hamilton.
00:12:31Meyer interviewed Corey,
00:12:32who told him that a couple of nights before Rob was killed,
00:12:35Corey went to a bar with some friends
00:12:38and got into an argument there.
00:12:42After questioning the patrons at the bar,
00:12:44Meyer decided it was unlikely
00:12:46that argument had led to murder.
00:12:49So far, the investigation was not moving quickly.
00:12:52In fact, it was barely moving at all.
00:12:55The railway company put out a $100,000 reward
00:12:58for more information.
00:13:00And detective Meyer's phone started blowing up with tips,
00:13:04each of which had to be checked out.
00:13:07Meanwhile, friends were trying to make sense of it all.
00:13:11Was it possible that he could have gotten
00:13:14into something involved with somebody
00:13:17that he shouldn't have been involved with?
00:13:19You worry that you never really know anyone.
00:13:22So that was definitely a worry of ours,
00:13:25and we crossed our minds.
00:13:27Of course, they didn't want to believe that
00:13:28about their friend Rob.
00:13:30They just wanted answers.
00:13:32We've actually asked the homicide detective multiple times,
00:13:36have you found anything?
00:13:38Another girlfriend, and they haven't found anything.
00:13:42He was who he seemed.
00:13:43He worked hard.
00:13:45He was in Tehachapi that day working for his family.
00:13:49In those first few days, Meyer questioned Sabrina Lamone
00:13:52about the couple's marriage.
00:13:54She said what everyone else seemed to know.
00:13:57Rob was a good husband and a terrific dad.
00:13:59He was as well-liked in his personal life
00:14:01as he was at work, and their marriage was great.
00:14:05She said that everybody loved Rob.
00:14:08And that seemed to be the whole puzzling story.
00:14:12But then there was this.
00:14:15A security camera captured someone entering the complex,
00:14:19limping across, carrying a bag,
00:14:22and then later, look closely at the upper edge
00:14:25of the screen, that same person exiting the scene.
00:14:30Who was this man, and did he kill Rob Lamone?
00:14:36Coming up, a suspect on foot, caught again on wheels.
00:14:41When you look at the motorcycle and the rider,
00:14:43are you thinking, there's our killer?
00:14:45It was something we need to definitely look into.
00:14:47When Dateline continues.
00:15:00August 19th, 2014, Rob and Sabrina Lamone
00:15:04should have been celebrating
00:15:06their 14th wedding anniversary.
00:15:09Instead, Sabrina was preparing
00:15:12for her husband's memorial service.
00:15:14Rob's coworkers, friends, and family packed the church.
00:15:19His son stood up and spoke.
00:15:21My dad taught me.
00:15:22Wearing my brother's hat, and just sobbing,
00:15:26and sobbing of how much he loved his dad,
00:15:30and he missed his dad.
00:15:31I am Kelly Bernate.
00:15:32Sabrina's best friend, Kelly, spoke on her behalf.
00:15:36I also read a letter that Sabrina had written him
00:15:39like in 2009, that I found in a scrapbook.
00:15:42I wanted to read it to all of you.
00:15:43I figured if she didn't have the strength to talk,
00:15:47that I would try to speak for her in some way,
00:15:49so I read that.
00:15:51You have worked so very hard,
00:15:53above and beyond what most men do.
00:15:56Sabrina sat in the front row, next to her two children.
00:16:00All the friends rallied around Sabrina and the kids,
00:16:03and did everything they could to support her.
00:16:05People donated money.
00:16:07People made sure there was food there every day.
00:16:11Everyone wanted to make sure she was taken care of.
00:16:14Meanwhile, Kern County Sheriff's detectives
00:16:16were busy tracking down leads.
00:16:19The biggest so far?
00:16:21Security video showing a man limping into the complex,
00:16:25and then later leaving the crime scene.
00:16:28Finding him wouldn't be easy,
00:16:30and then someone called the tip line.
00:16:33They knew of a subject who was younger,
00:16:35who walked with the limp,
00:16:38and they provided the subject's name.
00:16:41His name was Joshua Wehust.
00:16:44He lived near the complex and would often walk through it
00:16:47to get to and from his home.
00:16:48That was interesting to detectives.
00:16:51So were the shoe prints found
00:16:53in the vicinity of the crime scene.
00:16:55Did this guy have a criminal record?
00:16:58A small criminal record,
00:16:59mostly public intoxication type cases,
00:17:02and that type of stuff.
00:17:03And Mr. Wehust owned several guns.
00:17:06So you bring him in?
00:17:08We did.
00:17:09We had our surveillance team pick him up
00:17:10and bring him into the Tashbee Substation
00:17:12so I could speak to him.
00:17:13They checked his shoes,
00:17:15and those matched the shoe prints at the scene.
00:17:18So, the prime suspect?
00:17:21No, he had a solid alibi.
00:17:24He said he was with his parents,
00:17:25and we were able to speak to the parents
00:17:27and said that he was with them
00:17:28at the residence at the time the murder was occurred.
00:17:31So Joshua Wehust was cleared,
00:17:34and then came another tip.
00:17:36Detectives received a call from a local gunsmith.
00:17:39He'd said that he received a firearm revolver
00:17:42from a gentleman who was having issues with the firearm,
00:17:46and asked the gunsmith to change out the firing pin.
00:17:49I'm no gun expert,
00:17:50but how often do people change out
00:17:52the firing pins in their guns?
00:17:54Not very often.
00:17:56Police can sometimes use the mark
00:17:58a firing pin makes on a shell casing
00:18:01to later match that casing to a particular gun.
00:18:05So changing a firing pin could very well
00:18:07be an attempt to throw them off track.
00:18:10It was very suspicious,
00:18:11and the subject also owned a business
00:18:13within that same complex,
00:18:15so I immediately went up to Tashbee,
00:18:17seized the firearm,
00:18:18and sent it to our local lab here in Kern County.
00:18:22A firearms analyst compared bullets from that gun
00:18:26to one of the bullets recovered at the scene.
00:18:28And the results were negative.
00:18:30It was not the gun that was used to kill Rob Lamone.
00:18:32Disappointing.
00:18:33It was disappointing at first.
00:18:34Back to the grind.
00:18:37Detectives exhausted lead after lead.
00:18:40Nothing was panning out.
00:18:42They did find more security cameras
00:18:45at a business down the street.
00:18:47The cameras captured vehicles coming and going
00:18:49from the industrial complex on Goodrick Drive,
00:18:53including this work truck,
00:18:55which detectives believed had to be Rob
00:18:57returning from a call.
00:18:59They made freeze frames of the vehicles.
00:19:02We spoke to all the business owners,
00:19:03went door to door,
00:19:05showing them a packet that I had created
00:19:07of all the vehicles that had traveled east and west.
00:19:09And everybody identifies either their car
00:19:11or somebody else's car,
00:19:12and they all should have been in the area at the time.
00:19:16Yes, yep.
00:19:17Except a motorcycle.
00:19:18Except a motorcycle.
00:19:20There it was.
00:19:21The one vehicle no one was able to identify.
00:19:25The one that seemed to have no business being there.
00:19:28When you look at the motorcycle and the rider,
00:19:31are you thinking there's our killer?
00:19:32It could have been somebody
00:19:33who was driving down the street.
00:19:35It was a Sunday afternoon.
00:19:36They were out for a motorcycle ride,
00:19:38but it was something we needed to definitely look into
00:19:40to try and eliminate.
00:19:42Trouble was, they couldn't eliminate the motorcycle rider.
00:19:45Couldn't find him either.
00:19:47So you're kinda nowhere at that point.
00:19:49Yes, we're looking for anything
00:19:51to lead us in the right direction.
00:19:53And then you get a phone call.
00:19:54Yes.
00:19:56Coming up, strange vibes from one half
00:20:00of the perfect couple.
00:20:02She was like, oh, like a fake surprise look.
00:20:06And I was like, oh, that was weird.
00:20:09Had someone been keeping secrets?
00:20:11Rob says, I know, buddy, I know.
00:20:15I found out the other day.
00:20:31Rob and Sabrina Limon were living a picture-perfect life.
00:20:35Or were they?
00:20:38I feel numb.
00:20:39And you know what?
00:20:40I feel like God has crushed me
00:20:42and he has gotten my attention.
00:20:44Almost two weeks after Rob was shot to death,
00:20:47his best friend Jason received a voicemail message.
00:20:51I am begging you on my knees right now
00:20:56that I could perhaps meet with you and your wife
00:20:59and say sorry for the hurt that I caused you.
00:21:05And it's Jonathan apologizing not only to me,
00:21:09but to my wife, and he wants to be right with God.
00:21:14Wait, back up a second.
00:21:16Who's this guy, Jonathan?
00:21:17I used to work with Jonathan in the fire department.
00:21:21He was an apprentice and he was a paramedic.
00:21:25He was a very good paramedic and a really smart individual.
00:21:30And handsome and young.
00:21:32Jonathan Hearn was only 24.
00:21:34This is his oldest sister, Nicole.
00:21:37My brother was the gentlest and the kindest person
00:21:39that I had ever met.
00:21:41One of six siblings, all raised in Hesperia, California,
00:21:46another desert town 25 miles south of Silver Lakes.
00:21:51Jonathan grew up in a Christian household
00:21:53where the emphasis was on helping those in need.
00:21:57Our faith was always not really a supplement to our life,
00:22:02but it was the foundation of our life.
00:22:06Jonathan was homeschooled
00:22:08and later went off to the fire academy.
00:22:11When Jason met him, he was in training,
00:22:13but soon after, Jonathan became a full-fledged firefighter.
00:22:17One of his responsibilities was to buy food and supplies
00:22:20for the fire station,
00:22:22which made him a frequent customer at Costco,
00:22:25the same Costco where Sabrina Limon worked,
00:22:29passing out free samples.
00:22:31Sabrina told us, like,
00:22:32hey, I met one of the guys you used to work with.
00:22:34And I'm like, oh, that's gotta be Jonathan Hearn.
00:22:36Smartest guy, I mean, one of the smartest guys I ever met.
00:22:39That was 2012.
00:22:42Early the following year,
00:22:43Jason and Kelly ran into Jonathan at a Wolfpack party.
00:22:46And I was like, oh, you know, Sabrina.
00:22:48So I called at her from across the bar and I said,
00:22:50hey, Brina, Jonathan's here.
00:22:53And now Sabrina's normally like a, oh, hi,
00:22:58like very animated kind of person.
00:23:00And this time she was like, oh, like a fake surprise look.
00:23:05And you noticed that?
00:23:05And I noticed it.
00:23:06And I was like, oh, that was weird.
00:23:10Just about then, Rob came by.
00:23:13And I said, hey, Rob, do you know Jonathan?
00:23:16Sabrina's told me about him at work.
00:23:18She knows him from Costco.
00:23:20And he looked at me like confused and he goes,
00:23:22yeah, yeah, Kel, but like, he really didn't.
00:23:27Something was up,
00:23:28but Kelly couldn't figure out what it was.
00:23:31I had no idea, but something wasn't right.
00:23:34Something was not right.
00:23:35Nevertheless, the Wolfpack partied on.
00:23:39Jonathan hung out with us
00:23:40and started mingling with friends, talking to them.
00:23:44Then in the days following the party.
00:23:46I started getting text messages from Jonathan.
00:23:49You know, you guys are so cool.
00:23:50I would love to come hang out with you guys.
00:23:52And I was like, oh, okay, yeah, sure.
00:23:54Someday we could do that, Jonathan, cool.
00:23:56But then the text messages started coming
00:24:00every couple of days.
00:24:01And then to the point where they're coming every day.
00:24:03He's like doing everything he can
00:24:05to become part of your circle of friends.
00:24:06Yes, and it was to the point where it was obsessive.
00:24:09One day, Rob was helping the Bernatines
00:24:12remodel their home.
00:24:13Jonathan kept texting Jason,
00:24:16which by now seemed almost routine.
00:24:19Until Jonathan sent a text that did not seem routine.
00:24:23Jason, I really need to talk to your buddy, Rob.
00:24:26I need his phone number.
00:24:27I went outside and I called Jonathan
00:24:30and I asked him like, Jonathan, what's up, man?
00:24:33Why do you wanna talk to Rob?
00:24:34No, it's your radar that's going off.
00:24:36Yeah, my radar finally goes off.
00:24:38And he says, Jason, I'm sorry,
00:24:40but I've been living my life wrong.
00:24:42Jonathan spilled it.
00:24:44He wasn't just a would-be Wolfpacker.
00:24:46This deeply religious man had something to confess.
00:24:50So I go inside the house and I tell Rob,
00:24:53I don't know how to tell you this, Rob,
00:24:54but I got Jonathan Hearn on my phone.
00:24:56Apparently he's been having an affair with Sabrina.
00:24:59An enormous surprise to Jason,
00:25:02but not, it seemed, to Rob,
00:25:05who had already figured out his 33-year-old wife
00:25:08was having an affair with a 24-year-old firefighter.
00:25:12And Rob says, I know, buddy, I know.
00:25:17I found out the other day.
00:25:20Rob told Jason he'd discovered texts
00:25:23Jonathan had sent Sabrina
00:25:25and became so angry he broke Sabrina's phone.
00:25:28Then Rob agreed to talk with Jonathan and walked outside.
00:25:33When he came back in, I said, what's up, Rob?
00:25:35Do we need to go handle this?
00:25:36And he said, no, no, I got it, buddy.
00:25:38This is, we're good, we're good.
00:25:41He said that, you know, we're, Sabrina's really embarrassed.
00:25:46You know, please don't tell anybody.
00:25:48Jason and Kelly promised to tell no one,
00:25:51not even their wolf pack friends.
00:25:53Nobody wants to be embarrassed,
00:25:54particularly in front of your friends
00:25:56who sort of look up to you as the perfect couple.
00:25:59Exactly.
00:25:59We didn't wanna like damage their reputation or anything.
00:26:02I mean, we loved them.
00:26:05Jonathan's text messages stopped.
00:26:08Life went back to normal until about a year later,
00:26:11Kelly made a quick stop at the Costco
00:26:13and spotted Jonathan talking with Sabrina.
00:26:17I was upset.
00:26:18I think she could tell I was upset.
00:26:20Kelly told Jason.
00:26:21I was pissed.
00:26:22Jason called Jonathan.
00:26:24And I said, Jonathan, what the heck are you doing
00:26:28in Costco talking to Sabrina?
00:26:30He starts saying, you know, Jason, I'm sorry.
00:26:33It's not like that.
00:26:34Sabrina and I are just friends now.
00:26:37We have a spiritual relationship.
00:26:39And I told him, well, Jonathan,
00:26:40you've had an affair with this woman.
00:26:41You've caused damage to this family.
00:26:43So in the end, I tell him to never go into her Costco again.
00:26:49And I'm yelling at him emphatically.
00:26:51And he agrees.
00:26:53He says, okay, I won't.
00:26:55A few months later, Rob Lamone was shot and killed
00:26:58by someone who was standing right in front of him.
00:27:0212 days after that, Jonathan left his cryptic voicemail.
00:27:07God needs me to have a clear case.
00:27:10And I wanna fix this with you.
00:27:12Fix what?
00:27:15What exactly was going on?
00:27:18Coming up, a surprise visitor at Sabrina's door.
00:27:22Kelly says, well, you'll never guess who just came
00:27:25and visited Sabrina last night.
00:27:27And more secrets behind bedroom doors.
00:27:30Sabrina and Rob had invited another married couple
00:27:33into their group for an open relationship.
00:27:36When Dateline continues.
00:27:41The sudden loss of a spouse, a life partner, is devastating.
00:27:47And it always brings up a question.
00:27:49When is it okay to move on and try to find happiness again?
00:27:54After Rob Lamone was murdered,
00:27:56his wife Sabrina faced that question.
00:27:59And to her best friends, Kelly and Jason Bernatine,
00:28:03it's a new beginning for the couple.
00:28:05Kelly says, well, you'll never guess who just came
00:28:08and visited Sabrina last night.
00:28:11And I said, please, no.
00:28:13She says, yes, it was Jonathan.
00:28:14This is two weeks to the day after Rob's murder.
00:28:19Jonathan Hearn brought Sabrina flowers.
00:28:22And we're not talking like a little thing of flowers.
00:28:24I mean, we're talking like a huge bouquet of flowers.
00:28:27And I said, well, I'm gonna give you a bouquet of flowers.
00:28:30And he said, well, I'm gonna give you a bouquet of flowers.
00:28:32And I said, well, I'm gonna give you a bouquet of flowers.
00:28:35And it was like a huge bouquet of flowers
00:28:36that just happened to be the flowers
00:28:39that were in her wedding bouquet.
00:28:41Jonathan also wrote a letter to Sabrina.
00:28:44Sabrina read it to Kelly.
00:28:46And it talked about what a wonderful man Rob was
00:28:48and how he wants to be the kind of person that he was
00:28:52and all these things.
00:28:53And she's reading you the letter like,
00:28:55can you believe this jerk?
00:28:56Or she's reading you the letter like, isn't this sweet?
00:28:58Isn't this sweet?
00:28:59Listen to this.
00:29:00Listen to how sweet Jonathan is.
00:29:02So I'm trying not to throw up.
00:29:04I'm trying not to scream.
00:29:05I'm just like freaking out.
00:29:10Jonathan had already admitted he'd had an affair
00:29:12with Sabrina a year earlier, but said they'd broken it off.
00:29:16Their relationship now, purely spiritual.
00:29:20The Bernatines thought it was tasteless at best
00:29:23for him to be hanging around Sabrina
00:29:26just days after Rob was murdered.
00:29:28I said, how did that make you feel, the letter?
00:29:31And she said.
00:29:32I said, well, I don't feel like he has any bad intentions.
00:29:37The Bernatines thought otherwise.
00:29:39Jonathan's obsessive interest in the Wolf Pack,
00:29:43his affair with Sabrina, his weird voicemail.
00:29:47I started thinking, who would want Rob dead?
00:29:49Who wanted Rob out of the picture?
00:29:51And the only person that popped into my mind
00:29:53was Jonathan Hearn.
00:29:55Jason called the Sheriff's Department.
00:29:58I told the cops my story.
00:29:59I let them listen to the voicemail.
00:30:02They're concerned, but at the end of everything,
00:30:04they're like, well, you know,
00:30:06sounds like they had an affair.
00:30:08That's pretty far from murder.
00:30:10Maybe this guy is just trying to move in
00:30:12on your dead friend's wife.
00:30:16Definitely doesn't mean he killed your best friend.
00:30:20And this might be a guy you have to learn to live with.
00:30:23And so Jason wondered if maybe he'd misjudged
00:30:26the whole situation.
00:30:28After all, Jonathan was intelligent
00:30:30and had his whole life ahead of him.
00:30:33Why would he murder for Sabrina?
00:30:36Why would he throw away his life?
00:30:38Why would he risk that for a married woman with two kids?
00:30:41He's young, he has a good career
00:30:44as a firefighter paramedic.
00:30:46And he's no murderer.
00:30:47And he's not a murderer.
00:30:48I've known him for a long time.
00:30:51He did some bad stuff,
00:30:53but an affair is very far from murder.
00:30:55And in this case, even farther than usual,
00:30:59because Detective Meyer had learned something else
00:31:03about Rob and Sabrina.
00:31:05A few years prior,
00:31:06Sabrina and Rob had invited another married couple
00:31:10into their group
00:31:13for an open relationship between the four of them.
00:31:17And that was something of a way of life with those folks?
00:31:22Not sure if it's exactly a way of life,
00:31:23but you could say they had met before
00:31:25and swapped partners for the evening.
00:31:28So if Rob and Sabrina already had an open relationship,
00:31:33maybe Sabrina's affair with Jonathan was no big deal.
00:31:36Maybe Jason and Kelly just needed to get over it.
00:31:40I mean, look, okay, the guy's presumptuous.
00:31:43Okay, he's a snake.
00:31:44Okay, he wants you to sort of absolve him
00:31:47of this burden of guilt for having had the affair.
00:31:50But none of this makes him a killer.
00:31:52Just makes him a kind of a guy
00:31:53you'd rather stay away from.
00:31:55Absolutely.
00:31:56Still, Jason felt he had to talk with Sabrina
00:31:59about the situation.
00:32:00I explained to her in detail
00:32:02all the reasons I didn't like Jonathan
00:32:04and the conversations I'd had with him
00:32:07and how he was texting me so much,
00:32:10trying to manipulate me to bring him closer to her.
00:32:14And at the end of my speech,
00:32:16I thought it was a pretty good speech,
00:32:18she says, well, Jason, you know I get that guy.
00:32:21You don't have to worry about him.
00:32:23I feel like everybody was brought into my life for a reason.
00:32:26What reason would that possibly be?
00:32:31Coming up, Rob Lamone was killed by a large caliber gun.
00:32:37Jonathan Earne have a gun like that registered to him?
00:32:39Yes, he did.
00:32:40Coincidence?
00:32:42Ever since Sabrina Lamone got the news of Rob's death,
00:32:45her big sister, Julie Cordova, hardly left her side.
00:32:49Reena stayed in her room a lot.
00:32:52She just was crying.
00:32:55Sabrina was trying to cope with the loss of her husband.
00:32:59She was trying to get a job.
00:33:01She was trying to get a job.
00:33:02She was trying to get a job.
00:33:04She was trying to get a job.
00:33:06She was trying to get a job.
00:33:08She was trying to get a job.
00:33:10The loss of her husband and having to raise their two kids on her own.
00:33:15She's like, I don't know what I'm going to do.
00:33:18She was just in a fog.
00:33:21She couldn't make decisions, think or anything.
00:33:27That worried Julie.
00:33:29But even more worrisome, she says, was a certain someone
00:33:32who was coming around Sabrina and the kids way too soon.
00:33:37Jonathan Earne.
00:33:39He would just show up random, you know, at times, and he wouldn't leave.
00:33:45Julie, unaware of the affair, would see him at Sabrina's house, praying constantly.
00:33:51But, she says, what really caught her attention was this.
00:33:55He was cooking in the kitchen, and that's what Rob did.
00:34:00It was like he was moving in and was feeling right at home.
00:34:04Was I uncomfortable with it? Yes, because that was Robert's place, you know.
00:34:09And now this guy's taking his place.
00:34:13Yes, and Brina didn't, she didn't like it either.
00:34:17Who was this guy, and what was his reason for coming into Sabrina's life?
00:34:22Sheriff's Detective Meyer wondered the same thing.
00:34:26Jason Bernatine thought the detective had discounted his suspicions about Jonathan Hearn.
00:34:31But Meyer had not.
00:34:34In fact, he wanted to learn much more about this young firefighter from Hesperia, California.
00:34:39No criminal record that we were able to locate.
00:34:42But this was interesting.
00:34:44The bullet recovered from Rob Lamone's head was tested, and...
00:34:48The results from the lab was somewhere like a .44 caliber to a .45 caliber bullet that killed Rob Lamone.
00:34:55Big bullet, big gun. Yes.
00:34:58Did Jonathan Hearn have a gun like that registered to him? Yes, he did.
00:35:02And they found something else registered in his name, a Yamaha motorcycle.
00:35:08We went to the Yamaha website, checked out some other motorcycles similar in the same year,
00:35:13and was able to look at those motorcycles compared to the video that we captured from Goodrick Road,
00:35:19and they were very similar.
00:35:21And cops pulled video from this gas station at an intersection in the middle of nowhere.
00:35:27How would you look at video from that gas station?
00:35:29That would be the easiest path of travel from Tashpee to Hesperia, California.
00:35:35Where Jonathan Hearn lived. Yes.
00:35:37The video showed a motorcyclist pulling up to the gas pump and then walking inside the store.
00:35:43This was on the same day Rob was killed.
00:35:46The timestamp was about an hour after a similar motorcycle was picked up on security footage near the crime scene.
00:35:52It appeared to be the same motorcycle with a clothing change, same stature, knees very high on the gas tank,
00:35:59wearing a backpack, which the subject was wearing a backpack on Goodrick Road.
00:36:03So at that point in time, we believe same motorcycle, same subject, but with a clothing change.
00:36:08So this person stopped somewhere to change clothes. Yes.
00:36:11Once inside, still wearing a helmet, the biker grabbed a drink,
00:36:15then appeared to notice the security cameras and looked down.
00:36:21Detectives by now thought that man had to be Jonathan Hearn.
00:36:26I'm sort of hearing the word search warrant here. Yes.
00:36:29We started looking into phone records.
00:36:32When they did, they found thousands of calls and texts between Jonathan Hearn and Sabrina Lamone.
00:36:40No surprise since detectives already knew the two had had an affair.
00:36:45Can you tell what the text messages were or you just know that there were text messages between them?
00:36:49At the time, they were having some text conversations back and forth, but the content we did not know.
00:36:53The communications seemed to stop four months before Rob's death.
00:36:58But this was interesting.
00:37:00Jonathan's phone didn't ping anywhere near Rob's shop the day of the murder
00:37:05and registered zero activity at the time of the murder.
00:37:09But in the days before and after, there were thousands of texts and calls to and from a number that detectives did not recognize.
00:37:17When you run that number, who does it come back to?
00:37:19It came back to no subscriber information found.
00:37:22Meaning it's a pay-as-you-go phone, a burner. Possibly, yes.
00:37:25Detectives decided to keep a close eye on Jonathan.
00:37:29And when they tailed him, they watched Jonathan throw something away.
00:37:33He had driven to a target and dropped some motorcycle pipes off into the dumpster.
00:37:39Meyer thought perhaps Jonathan had changed out his exhaust pipes to make his bike look and sound different.
00:37:46It sounds like you're becoming more and more certain that not only did Jonathan Hearn kill Rob Limon,
00:37:51but that he used that motorcycle to get to and from the murder.
00:37:54Yes.
00:37:55And now he's trying to cover his tracks.
00:37:57Yes, cover those tracks.
00:37:59Kelly and Jason never did tell Sabrina that they talked with Detective Meyer about Jonathan.
00:38:05And Meyer asked them to please not say anything to anyone.
00:38:10It was extremely hard. It was hell. It was absolute hell.
00:38:15Detective Meyer was looking hard at Jonathan Hearn.
00:38:19There was that unfamiliar number that showed up in Jonathan's phone records.
00:38:24Meyer requested the location of that phone, and he got it.
00:38:29And that's when the secrets of Silver Lakes really started to emerge.
00:38:36Coming up, the lovers caught on tape.
00:38:40Good morning, my lover.
00:38:42Well, good morning.
00:38:44And feeling guilty about something.
00:38:46I have been a bad girl. I feel like I killed the most horrible person in the world.
00:38:51I did too.
00:38:53When Dateline continues.
00:39:06Weeks had passed since Rob Limon's life was violently cut short.
00:39:11Detective Randall Meyer and his team were zeroing in on Jonathan Hearn as a possible suspect.
00:39:17And now, in Jonathan's phone records,
00:39:20they found a lot of calls and texts to and from a burner phone.
00:39:26The kind of phone that somebody would use if they were either committing a crime or having an extramarital affair.
00:39:32Trying to definitely avoid law enforcement detection.
00:39:34Well, or husband detection.
00:39:36Yes, yes.
00:39:38I was able to get a wiretap authorized,
00:39:42and so we were able to go up on the phones and listen to their conversations.
00:39:45When they finally listened, their suspicions were confirmed.
00:39:49Hello?
00:39:50Jonathan was on one end of the call, and on the other, Sabrina Limon.
00:39:55Hey.
00:39:57Hey.
00:39:58Were you rashing?
00:39:59No, it's okay.
00:40:02It was immediately obvious the two were lovers.
00:40:06I love you so much, my girl.
00:40:08I love you.
00:40:09I love you so much.
00:40:12How many hours of conversations do you think you listened to between Sabrina Limon and Jonathan Hearn?
00:40:18Hundreds.
00:40:20Jonathan often spoke with Sabrina from the fire station.
00:40:24What were they talking about for most of that time?
00:40:26They talked about their future together.
00:40:28They talked about God a lot, about God's plan for them.
00:40:34They also talked about Detective Meyer.
00:40:37I just got a text message from Detective Meyer, and he asked me to call him.
00:40:41So I'm going to.
00:40:43Okay.
00:40:45And I'll pray.
00:40:48Okay.
00:40:49Okay, I just wanted you to pray.
00:40:51And I'm going to pray and call him.
00:40:55God, please help us.
00:40:56God, please help us realize, help Sabrina to have the right words.
00:41:02A couple of minutes later, Sabrina called Meyer.
00:41:05She asked about the investigation of her husband's murder.
00:41:09So there's no information at all.
00:41:13Honestly, I don't have anything, and I wish I did, but I think we're kind of getting into a dead end.
00:41:19Which was not true.
00:41:21Minutes later, Sabrina called Jonathan.
00:41:24Everything's fine.
00:41:25Did he ask you any questions?
00:41:27No questions at all.
00:41:29Meyer was tickling the wire.
00:41:32It's an expression police use, giving wiretapped suspects something to talk about while the cops are listening.
00:41:39Meyer often found himself in the mood to tickle.
00:41:43Like when he told Sabrina police had found DNA at the crime scene.
00:41:48The best news we've gotten so far.
00:41:50Really?
00:41:51Really?
00:41:52Oh, my gosh.
00:41:53That's great.
00:41:55That was not true.
00:41:56That was a ruse we were using.
00:41:58And what happens as a result of that?
00:42:00Another immediate phone call to Jonathan to talk about the possible DNA.
00:42:06Sabrina and Jonathan did not exactly rejoice over this apparent break in the case.
00:42:12Instead, it sounded as if they suspected Meyer was playing them.
00:42:16Jonathan even knew the right terminology.
00:42:19Officers are allowed to use sprues, meaning they're allowed to, if you want to get information, you're allowed to lie to get information.
00:42:27No, no, no.
00:42:28I mean, I, yeah.
00:42:30That's kind of what I feel like.
00:42:32It didn't appear that that would be a normal conversation you would have in hopes that the suspect would be caught.
00:42:39The calls continued.
00:42:41Good morning, my lover.
00:42:43Well, good morning.
00:42:46They talked about the Bible.
00:42:48There's a lot of good stuff in there.
00:42:50God is so good.
00:42:51Yeah, God is so good.
00:42:54Including the Old Testament story of David and Bathsheba.
00:42:59David is a lot like you and I, Sabrina.
00:43:03It's the story of King David and the affair he had with Bathsheba, who was married to another man.
00:43:09After Bathsheba became pregnant, David tried to cover up the affair but failed.
00:43:14And then he even went on to kill the guy, like send him into battle and pretty much had him killed off.
00:43:21In the Bible, David and Bathsheba eventually married.
00:43:25David suffered the consequences of his sin but repented and God forgave him.
00:43:30He was someone who committed adultery, who had an affair, and so he went way out of his way to cover his sin.
00:43:38Sin was a recurring theme for Jonathan and Sabrina.
00:43:42I have been a bad girl.
00:43:44I feel like the most horrible person in the world.
00:43:47I do, too.
00:43:49I do, too.
00:43:50I feel like I see all of my sins and who I've been.
00:43:55I see it all laid out in front of me.
00:43:57Exactly what sins were they talking about?
00:44:01By now, detectives had shared with Kelly and Jason some details of the investigation.
00:44:07So they knew Jonathan Hearn was the prime suspect.
00:44:11And detectives suspected Sabrina as well.
00:44:15It was something Jason couldn't imagine when he first spoke with police.
00:44:20And I told him I bet my life she's not involved.
00:44:23Absolutely not.
00:44:25No way.
00:44:27No way.
00:44:28If Jonathan did this, he did it on his own.
00:44:30You know Sabrina better than he does.
00:44:32Would you have bet your life that she wasn't involved?
00:44:34Probably not my life.
00:44:36I did not want her to be involved at all.
00:44:39I prayed she wasn't.
00:44:40But would I bet my life on it? No.
00:44:43Meanwhile, Detective Meyer continued to tickle the wire.
00:44:47And while listening to the lovers talk in real time, he texted Sabrina a photo.
00:44:54And she read the text to Jonathan.
00:44:57Sabrina, we think this is our guy.
00:45:00Do you recognize this person on the motorcycle?
00:45:03Jonathan heard that and prayed.
00:45:18You were playing Sabrina and Jonathan like a couple of violins.
00:45:23Yes, that's what we were doing.
00:45:24I'm surprised you didn't have sheet music.
00:45:28Jonathan seemed to realize police were closing in.
00:45:31Yet was trying to convince himself they were not.
00:45:41Sabrina seemed to suspect her phone was being tapped.
00:45:47When the lovers said goodbye that night,
00:45:50it sounded as if they thought it might be for the last time.
00:46:02Can I talk to you if I get contacted?
00:46:10Two days after that phone call,
00:46:12three months after Rob Lamone's murder,
00:46:15Sabrina and Jonathan were placed under arrest.
00:46:19Detective Meyer called Jason and Kelly.
00:46:22We got him.
00:46:23Everything looks good.
00:46:25The evidence looks good.
00:46:27And you think, well, this is finally over.
00:46:29That's what we thought.
00:46:30Well, you couldn't have been more wrong.
00:46:33No.
00:46:35Coming up, Sabrina Lamone in the hot seat.
00:46:39Did you plan to kill Rob?
00:46:41No. Oh, my God, no.
00:46:43But not for long.
00:46:45Detective Meyer called me and said that he's got some really bad news.
00:47:00In late November 2014,
00:47:03Jonathan Hearn pleaded not guilty
00:47:05to the murder of his married lover, Sabrina Lamone's husband, Rob.
00:47:10Sabrina had been arrested, too.
00:47:12By now, her friends Jason and Kelly were convinced she belonged behind bars.
00:47:18It was by Sabrina's own actions.
00:47:20She let him into her life, into her house.
00:47:23And then, on the day Sabrina was scheduled to be arraigned,
00:47:29Detective Meyer called me and said that he's got some really bad news,
00:47:36that they're going to release Sabrina.
00:47:39The DA decided there was not enough evidence to charge her.
00:47:43Good case against Jonathan, not as good a case against Sabrina.
00:47:46Yes.
00:47:47How did that feel?
00:47:49Like, that's literally like defeat from the jaws of victory.
00:47:53I mean, you think you got it, and then she's turned loose.
00:47:56That was a tough feeling, obviously.
00:47:58There was circumstantial evidence against Jonathan,
00:48:02like the security video showing a motorcycle that looked like his.
00:48:07But the best evidence against Sabrina came from the wiretap.
00:48:10And in all those hours of conversation,
00:48:13she never once said that she conspired with Jonathan,
00:48:17or even thought he might be the killer.
00:48:20And in hours of intense questioning by detectives,
00:48:23Sabrina never budged.
00:48:26Did you know that he had planned to murder your husband?
00:48:28No. No.
00:48:33You didn't know that?
00:48:34No, I did not know that he planned on murdering Robert.
00:48:38Because he did.
00:48:41I can't.
00:48:43It's like I want it to just be a lie, you know, like there's no way.
00:48:47Did you plan to kill his brother?
00:48:49No. Oh, my God, no.
00:48:51When did Jonathan tell you he did it?
00:48:53He never came out and said it.
00:48:55Yes, he did. Yes, he did.
00:48:57You guys are doing nothing but hiding this thing the whole time.
00:49:00Yes, he did.
00:49:01No.
00:49:02Well, what are you trying to hide?
00:49:05I know. Okay, I know it doesn't look good.
00:49:08No.
00:49:09There's a difference between does it look good and absolutely is not good.
00:49:12This is absolutely not good.
00:49:14I understand that.
00:49:16Kelly and Jason were devastated when the DA turned Sabrina loose.
00:49:20We first spoke with them three months after her release.
00:49:24You think right now, what, she's getting away with murder?
00:49:26Yes, she's getting away with murder right now.
00:49:29The next time we sat down with the Bernatines,
00:49:32they told us their tight circle of friends had all turned on Sabrina.
00:49:38After she was released, what was the effect on the wolf pack?
00:49:42What did the other wolves think?
00:49:48No, nothing's been the same.
00:49:50Were there people in the pack who supported Sabrina,
00:49:54who thought that she wasn't guilty of anything?
00:49:57No.
00:49:58So really there was like sort of unanimity among your friends?
00:50:01Yeah.
00:50:02Sabrina told her sister Julie that the wolf pack was mistaken,
00:50:06and so were detectives, about her and about Jonathan too.
00:50:11She thought Jonathan couldn't be involved.
00:50:13Mm-hmm. She just couldn't believe it.
00:50:16Could not believe it.
00:50:18Her pack gone, Julie says life grew miserable for her sister.
00:50:23The people out in Silver Lakes were so cruel,
00:50:26and Sabrina and the kids couldn't go anywhere.
00:50:28She had to homeschool them.
00:50:30Because the other kids were talking about it.
00:50:32Yes, the other kids would say things.
00:50:34The parents were brutal.
00:50:36And she was, what, sort of a pariah in that community.
00:50:40Yes, she was.
00:50:42Sabrina took her children and relocated more than 100 miles away.
00:50:48At the same time, Jonathan Hearn was preparing to face trial
00:50:52on charges he'd murdered Sabrina's husband Rob.
00:50:55Months went by, and then years.
00:50:58Kelly and Jason never wavered from their belief
00:51:01that Sabrina Lamone had been involved in her husband's murder.
00:51:05I always had hope that they would get her somehow.
00:51:09I don't know how or when, but I definitely had that hope.
00:51:12Jonathan still hadn't been tried.
00:51:16He was still awaiting trial.
00:51:18We always knew that there was a chance that he might decide to tell the truth
00:51:22and hoped for that day, and it finally came.
00:51:27More than two years after Rob's murder
00:51:29and just weeks before his own trial was about to start,
00:51:33Jonathan Hearn, who referred to himself as David from the biblical story,
00:51:38told investigators he was ready to talk about Sabrina,
00:51:43his modern-day Bathsheba.
00:51:46Coming up...
00:51:48From that moment, we knew that this was real.
00:51:51Jonathan's story eagerly awaited by almost everyone except Sabrina.
00:51:57Must have felt like vindication for the two of you.
00:51:59Definitely.
00:52:01When Dateline continues.
00:52:09DATELINE
00:52:12Late 2016, firefighter Jonathan Hearn was just weeks away from trial
00:52:18when Detective Randall Meyer heard some unexpected news.
00:52:22Jonathan's attorney approached the district attorney
00:52:25and said that Jonathan could provide information
00:52:28that would lead to the possible prosecution of Sabrina Lamone.
00:52:32Jonathan made a startling confession.
00:52:35Yes, he had fired the gun that killed Rob Lamone,
00:52:39but he hadn't acted alone.
00:52:42Sabrina, he said, wasn't there when the murder occurred,
00:52:45but he said she'd helped him plan it every step of the way.
00:52:50He gave her up.
00:52:51He did.
00:52:52Jonathan said Sabrina wanted Rob out of the picture
00:52:55so she could be with Jonathan,
00:52:57and he said she did not consider divorce to be an option.
00:53:03He was concerned about the perception of the community that she lived in.
00:53:07So murder is better than the stigma of divorce.
00:53:10Yes.
00:53:12Jonathan had no hard evidence to prove Sabrina's involvement.
00:53:16Remember, those wiretap recordings certainly proved an affair.
00:53:26But there was no explicit mention of a murder plot.
00:53:30This would be Jonathan's word against Sabrina's.
00:53:33The district attorney offered Jonathan a plea agreement.
00:53:37In exchange for testifying against Sabrina in court,
00:53:41his murder charge would be reduced to voluntary manslaughter.
00:53:45Jonathan took the deal.
00:53:47His sister Nicole said the family believed Jonathan was innocent
00:53:51and had no idea he planned to confess until they got a call from his attorney.
00:53:56I felt like it was so surreal when I heard it.
00:54:01I was shaken to my core.
00:54:04Sabrina and Rob's former best friends, Kelly and Jason Bernatine,
00:54:09were in the courtroom when Jonathan pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
00:54:14From that moment, we knew that this was real,
00:54:17that he just pled guilty and was going to implicate Sabrina.
00:54:21It was a relief and sickening all at once.
00:54:24Jonathan had faced a possible sentence of life without parole.
00:54:29Under the terms of his plea deal, he could be out after less than 25 years.
00:54:34He'll be under the age of 50.
00:54:36He shot a man in the face. I have a hard time with that.
00:54:39It's hard because if that's what we needed to get her
00:54:43and we knew that she was behind this, then what do you do?
00:54:48What do you do?
00:54:50Detective Meyer drove more than 100 miles to Sabrina's new home
00:54:55to arrest her for the second time.
00:54:58She was confused because she was scheduled to testify
00:55:01in the trial of Jonathan Hearn.
00:55:04Instead, she was a defendant charged with murder.
00:55:08Now we're at the point where our story strays a bit
00:55:11from the biblical tale of David and Bathsheba
00:55:14because there was never any suggestion that Bathsheba played any role
00:55:18in the plot to murder her husband.
00:55:20And in the Bible, David does not roll on Bathsheba
00:55:24in return for a reduced sentence.
00:55:27What was it like to see her in court in shackles?
00:55:31It was awesome.
00:55:33Must have felt like vindication for the two of you.
00:55:35Definitely. She was always very into her hair and makeup and her clothes
00:55:40and superficial things like that, so knowing that it was probably killing her
00:55:44to be in that state in front of people and cameras was very satisfying also.
00:55:49Very satisfying.
00:55:51Sabrina's sister Julie believed she belonged anywhere but jail.
00:55:56Is it conceivable to you that Sabrina played any role in her husband's murder?
00:56:00No.
00:56:01She couldn't be talked into it?
00:56:02No.
00:56:03She couldn't be persuaded to do it? She couldn't be manipulated to do it?
00:56:06No. For what?
00:56:09There is no way she would want that for her husband.
00:56:13Good morning, everyone.
00:56:14Good morning.
00:56:15Nice to see you all back.
00:56:16Sabrina's trial began in September 2017.
00:56:19It had everything. It had sex, religion, the seemingly perfect, beautiful family
00:56:26that had all these secrets.
00:56:29It was tense and emotional.
00:56:30Olivia LaVoie covered the trial for NBC station KGET in Bakersfield.
00:56:36Her station made a last minute decision to stream the trial live on its website.
00:56:42We were blown away by literally thousands of people during the day, all day,
00:56:49were just glued to it.
00:56:51People who were typically watching soap operas now were watching this trial.
00:56:56So Bakersfield probably took a big hit in productivity during this trial.
00:56:59Yes.
00:57:00Throughout this trial you will hear from the mouth of Sabrina Lamont and Jonathan Hearn
00:57:06that they had a purpose.
00:57:08Prosecutor Eric Smith laid out his case for the jury.
00:57:11They had a plan, and that plan was to get rid of Robert Lamont.
00:57:17Why? So they could be together.
00:57:19The state presented mountains of evidence of Sabrina and Jonathan's communications
00:57:24before and after the murder.
00:57:27My Jonathan, I love you.
00:57:29Including letters.
00:57:31I love you for the hopes and faith in our future together.
00:57:35I love you for giving me a new perspective on life.
00:57:38Text messages.
00:57:39I am in love with you deeply, a love that I've never felt before.
00:57:44And, of course, those wiretapped phone calls, which often centered around God.
00:57:50God, please help us. God, please help us to be wise.
00:57:54Help Sabrina to have the right words.
00:57:58It appeared that they were justifying all of their actions through religion,
00:58:03through prayer, and through this promise that they were going to live for God
00:58:09and that God had a purpose for them that they were going to fulfill.
00:58:13According to the state, Sabrina and Jonathan's purpose was to eliminate Rob Lamont
00:58:18so they could embark on a new life together.
00:58:22Of course, there was no smoking gun.
00:58:25The state's case centered on the testimony of an admitted killer
00:58:29who was about to tell the jury everything, or so he said.
00:58:33Was he making a true confession or spinning a tale to save himself?
00:58:40It was the moment everyone was waiting for.
00:58:42The testimony you shall give in this matter shall be the truth,
00:58:44the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God.
00:58:47I do.
00:58:48Coming up.
00:58:50I fired the first shot from within the bag.
00:58:54He fell seemingly mortally wounded.
00:58:57Would Jonathan Hearn really turn on the woman he said he loved?
00:59:14It's not every murder trial where the prosecutor asks the jury
00:59:19to believe the words of the admitted killer.
00:59:23Here he was, the star witness for the state, Jonathan Hearn,
00:59:28who would spend the better part of seven days testifying against his former lover,
00:59:33Sabrina Lamont.
00:59:34She seemed very friendly, very nice.
00:59:37Jonathan talked about meeting Sabrina at Costco and asking for her number.
00:59:42He told the jury he didn't learn she was married until later,
00:59:46a fact he said didn't mesh easily with his conservative Christian upbringing.
00:59:53But then there was also the guilt of recognizing that I was doing something immoral.
00:59:58He said there was just something irresistible about this older married woman.
01:00:04I know in most affairs you would assume it's a sexual draw or something along those lines,
01:00:12and with her, while we were engaged in that, there was a lot more than that.
01:00:18In time, he said, Sabrina revealed to him a deep unhappiness in her open marriage to Rob.
01:00:25She expressed to me that he was pretty exploitative and objectifying her.
01:00:31He was willing to pretty much pass her off to any other guy
01:00:35and not really leave the doors of their marriage closed.
01:00:39Jonathan listened, absorbed, and he said his disgust for Rob Lamont grew.
01:00:47Her frustrations with Rob became my frustrations.
01:00:50Her demons became my demons.
01:00:52Jonathan told the jury they spoke about how much easier life would be without Rob.
01:00:58You know, I distinctly remember it coming up in conversation as a joke at first.
01:01:04A joke that quickly took a dark turn.
01:01:08That progressed from humor towards what?
01:01:11Towards an actual plot to kill her husband.
01:01:16What was the plan for your relationship once he was gone?
01:01:19To, in time, marry and continue to live our lives together.
01:01:27Jonathan said Sabrina did not want to simply divorce Rob and marry him.
01:01:33She expressed that he would honestly rather be dead than divorced,
01:01:37and losing her would essentially kill him.
01:01:41He said they discussed several ways to get rid of Rob,
01:01:44and at first settled on poisoning.
01:01:47The proof, Jonathan told the jury, was in the pudding.
01:01:51Banana pudding, to be precise, laced with arsenic he'd purchased.
01:01:56It happened in April of 2014.
01:01:59I made a pretty large batch of banana pudding with Nilla wafers.
01:02:06He said he put a small portion into a plastic container.
01:02:10And stirred in the arsenic into the pudding.
01:02:14He said Sabrina kept the poisoned pudding in her refrigerator.
01:02:18The plan, he said, was for her to put it in Rob's lunch.
01:02:22But, Jonathan testified, they lost their nerve.
01:02:26She had told him to not eat the pudding because I think she said that
01:02:32she told him the bananas had gone bad in it.
01:02:35By August 2014, he said they had a new plan.
01:02:39Jonathan said Sabrina told him the location of Rob's workplace at the rail yard.
01:02:45He even did a drive-by one day to check it out.
01:02:49Sabrina, he said, told him Rob would be at work on August 17th.
01:02:54Jonathan testified he packed a mask to disguise his face,
01:02:58and modified his motorcycle too.
01:03:01Which included using some adhesive flashing to change the color of the tank,
01:03:07the exhaust pipes, and the rear fender.
01:03:12Jonathan said he rode his disguised motorcycle out to Tehachapi.
01:03:17That was him on the security camera video, he said.
01:03:20He told investigators he faked a limp to throw them off.
01:03:24But, he said, once he saw Rob opening the shop's garage door,
01:03:29Jonathan said he felt conflicted about becoming a killer.
01:03:34Obviously, there's some apprehension in the thought of senselessly taking someone's life.
01:03:40Jonathan said he paused before entering, so he could pray.
01:03:45There had been sort of an ongoing narrative of Sabrina and I and seeking purpose in our lives.
01:03:54If a murder could have a catchphrase, said Jonathan, seeking purpose would be it.
01:04:00It was a tagline that essentially we gave to ultimately seeing this relationship through
01:04:06and living the lifestyle that we wanted.
01:04:09After praying, Jonathan said he entered the shop.
01:04:13I fired the first shot.
01:04:15He fell seemingly mortally wounded.
01:04:19Jonathan said he then tried to make it look as if there'd been a robbery.
01:04:23Opening cabinet drawers, pulling out papers, and stealing a laptop computer.
01:04:28And then, before he left...
01:04:31I really didn't want to leave him if he wasn't entirely dead.
01:04:37So he fired a second shot into Rob's head.
01:04:41Jonathan said he returned home and called Sabrina to tell her.
01:04:45I had done it and that everything was about to change.
01:04:50Jonathan told the jury he knew from the start the affair would be found out
01:04:55and he would become a suspect.
01:04:57Did you trust Sabrina to speak appropriately with law enforcement?
01:05:02I did.
01:05:03Why?
01:05:04Frankly, this was the culmination of something we had essentially planned together.
01:05:10And so, perhaps my weakness, my trust, was pretty strong in her.
01:05:15The defense had its own cross-examination of Jonathan.
01:05:19And right off the bat, Sabrina's attorney, Richard Terry, questioned Jonathan's credibility.
01:05:25Like the claim she'd held the poisoned pudding in her refrigerator.
01:05:31Potentially putting her children in danger of eating that pudding, right?
01:05:37If you actually delivered it to her and she knew about it, right?
01:05:42No, sir.
01:05:44You don't know who's going to get into it or who's going to have access to it, right?
01:05:50If you'd actually given her anything like that, right?
01:05:54Yeah, I was not overseeing the status of her refrigerator.
01:05:58The defense attorney reminded the jury no one benefited more from blaming Sabrina
01:06:04than Jonathan Hearn, who could have received life in prison without parole.
01:06:10Now, under the plea agreement you've entered into, you're only getting 25 years and a few months, right?
01:06:18Yes, sir.
01:06:20That means you'd probably be out before you were even 50 years old then, sir,
01:06:24after having murdered a man in cold blood, is that right?
01:06:31That was definitely cold-blooded, sir.
01:06:34My question was, is you would be out before you were 50 years old, is that right?
01:06:40That was part of your question, yes, sir.
01:06:43Jonathan's attorney, Clayton Campbell, sat next to him during his testimony.
01:06:49Jonathan's confession was genuine.
01:06:52Jonathan wanted to come clean about what he did from very early on.
01:06:58He knows what he did was wrong, and he felt that maintaining a not-guilty plea was dishonest.
01:07:06Challenging Jonathan's credibility was just the start.
01:07:10The defense had its own case to present, and wait until you hear it.
01:07:15That was the bombshell of all bombshells.
01:07:18Coming up, who exactly was on trial here?
01:07:23Did you and Ms. Lamone and her husband and your husband engage in sexual activity together?
01:07:31When Dateline continues.
01:07:34Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
01:07:36When it came time for the defense to present its case,
01:07:40Sabrina Lamone's attorney, Richard Terry, didn't even try to convince the jury
01:07:45that his client was as wholesome as apple pie.
01:07:48You weren't claiming that Sabrina had been the perfect wife to Rob.
01:07:52No.
01:07:53You weren't claiming that she had never cheated.
01:07:55No.
01:07:56You weren't claiming that she had never cheated.
01:07:58No.
01:07:59You weren't claiming that Sabrina had been the perfect wife to Rob.
01:08:01No.
01:08:02You weren't claiming that she had never cheated.
01:08:04No.
01:08:05You weren't claiming that there had never been an affair with Jonathan Hearn.
01:08:07No.
01:08:08You weren't even claiming that Jonathan Hearn hadn't killed Rob Lamone.
01:08:12You were just claiming she didn't have any part in it.
01:08:15Right, because beyond Jonathan Hearn, there was nothing else that said that she was.
01:08:19This case, said attorney Terry, was really all about Jonathan Hearn, what he said, what he did, and why.
01:08:28He was highly intelligent, and he manipulated Sabrina Lamone.
01:08:33And he decided he knew Sabrina was never going to divorce Rob, but he had to have her.
01:08:43She had to be his.
01:08:49And in his mind, the only way to get that, to have her, was to get rid of Robert.
01:08:55And perhaps, Terry told the jury, Sabrina wasn't the only older married woman to catch Jonathan's eye.
01:09:03He was very smart and just seemed way older than he was.
01:09:10Jennifer Lentz testified she met Jonathan Hearn online.
01:09:14They chatted by text and on the phone.
01:09:18And it was kind of flattering to have someone who was focusing so much attention on you.
01:09:24Of course.
01:09:26Attention Jonathan continued to lavish on Jennifer, even after he started sleeping with Sabrina.
01:09:33Even during the time that he's supposedly so madly in love with Sabrina,
01:09:37he's still constantly texting her, sending her pictures, communicating with her.
01:09:42The defense argued Jonathan Hearn was a slick, Bible-quoting predator, Sabrina his innocent victim.
01:09:51You said that she and Rob...
01:09:53The real head-snapper came when the defense argued Sabrina was also a victim of her own supposed best friend, Kelly Bernatine.
01:10:02Remember, she'd suspected Sabrina before almost anyone.
01:10:07Because she'd already lied to me once.
01:10:10On the witness stand, Kelly was forced to admit she didn't just know about the Lamones' open marriage.
01:10:16She and her husband Jason participated.
01:10:19Some of her testimony was for mature audiences only.
01:10:23Did you and Ms. Lamone and her husband and your husband engage in sexual activity together?
01:10:31Yes, we did.
01:10:33I'll admit, when I approached this issue with the Bernatines, I was in uncharted territory.
01:10:39You said the two of you had a sexual relationship with Rob and Sabrina?
01:10:43Yes.
01:10:45But you never had sex with Sabrina and you were never with Rob?
01:10:49No.
01:10:50What am I missing here?
01:10:51Without going into any more detail, that's about as much as we'll tell you.
01:10:55Kelly cleared things up a bit on the witness stand.
01:10:59It was usually Sabrina and I, and then we would go have sex with our husbands.
01:11:04Quite the seething cauldron of passion out there.
01:11:07What else are you going to do in the desert?
01:11:10Rob had brought you gifts...
01:11:12At trial, the defense attorney suggested Kelly had a grudge against Sabrina
01:11:17because Kelly was in love with Rob Lamone.
01:11:22You pointed a finger at your best friend and believe that she's a killer.
01:11:25I do. It's a horrible thing.
01:11:28As far as you know, Sabrina may not have known anything about Jonathan's killing her husband, right?
01:11:33No, I know she knew. I know she knew by her behavior.
01:11:37And because of that feeling, you want to get Sabrina, right?
01:11:41I believe she should pay for his murder.
01:11:44Because you believe she was involved.
01:11:46Yes.
01:11:47And that's because you cared about her husband so deeply, right?
01:11:53I believe I cared about him more than she did.
01:11:57How did Sabrina really feel about Rob and Jonathan?
01:12:01There was only one way to find out.
01:12:04Calling a defendant to testify is always a risk.
01:12:08Sabrina's attorney felt it was one worth taking.
01:12:11She's not slick like Hearn is.
01:12:14She's not articulate like Hearn is.
01:12:17The jury needed to get a better picture of who Sabrina Lamone was.
01:12:20My name's Sabrina Lamone.
01:12:22Sabrina told the jury what had attracted her to Jonathan Hearn.
01:12:26He was like nobody I'd ever met before.
01:12:30He was very intelligent.
01:12:33I felt like I was with the human dictionary.
01:12:36Sabrina said at the time she met Jonathan, her husband had been inattentive.
01:12:41She said he was hooked on watching porn and overly fixated on sex.
01:12:46And she said she felt some guilt about their lifestyle.
01:12:50Jonathan, she said, offered something different, something appealing.
01:12:54He would pray with me and be very caring and spiritually focused.
01:13:05Jonathan used religion, Sabrina said, to give himself power over her.
01:13:11Jonathan controlled me through carrying his Bible with him everywhere that he went
01:13:16and using that to guilt me but also make me feel safe and secure.
01:13:24She admitted it was true that she dreamt about a future with Jonathan.
01:13:29I definitely fantasized with him a lot.
01:13:34Were you in love with Jonathan Hearn?
01:13:38Yes.
01:13:40Did you still love your husband?
01:13:43Yes, I did.
01:13:45Were you wanting to give up your life with Rob to be with Jonathan?
01:13:51No.
01:13:53I had the best of both worlds right there.
01:13:56I guess I didn't want to give up either one of them.
01:14:01After Rob's death, she said Jonathan was there for her, someone to lean on.
01:14:05He felt like my rock at that moment in time.
01:14:11So then why, asked her attorney, did she conceal her affair with Jonathan from investigators?
01:14:17Because I was embarrassed.
01:14:20That's something that Robert and I didn't want exposed.
01:14:26Sabrina insisted she never planned to poison her husband with arsenic-laced banana pudding.
01:14:32And when Rob died, she said she had absolutely no idea Jonathan was the killer.
01:14:38Would you allow someone who killed your husband around your children?
01:14:43No, absolutely not.
01:14:46Had you ever discussed any time from the time you began being involved with Jonathan
01:14:53until the day Robert was killed and after Robert was killed, discussed with him killing your husband?
01:15:00No, I did not.
01:15:02At any time did you discuss about wanting Robert to be gone or dead?
01:15:08No, I never said dead or gone.
01:15:13No, I did not want Robert gone.
01:15:17Kelly and Jason did not buy Sabrina's defense.
01:15:21And as to Rob and Sabrina's open marriage?
01:15:25As far as I know, it was Sabrina's idea, not Rob's.
01:15:28I think Sabrina was using that as an excuse, and she used it against Jonathan to manipulate him.
01:15:35The prosecutor was equally skeptical.
01:15:37Good afternoon, Ms. Simone.
01:15:39It was his turn to cross-examine Sabrina.
01:15:43Coming up, was Sabrina Limon just a cheating wife?
01:15:47It's a lifestyle that I don't expect people to understand.
01:15:50Or a calculating killer?
01:15:53This is not a case of he said, she said.
01:15:56This is a case of he said, she lied.
01:16:10Sabrina Limon told the jury she'd had no knowledge of or involvement in her husband Rob's murder.
01:16:18Now it was prosecutor Eric Smith's turn to cross-examine her.
01:16:22He used the huge trove of phone records, wiretapped calls and texts to find plenty of evidence which he said undermined Sabrina's story.
01:16:32Including all the time she spent on the phone with her lover Jonathan Hearn.
01:16:37On the very day he murdered her husband.
01:16:40I added it up. 223 minutes.
01:16:44Three hours and 45 minutes you talked with Jonathan Hearn prior to him leaving to go kill your husband.
01:16:51I did not know he was leaving to go kill my husband.
01:16:55Remember, Sabrina claimed she never wanted her husband gone.
01:17:00She said she had the best of both worlds.
01:17:03She said she had the best of both worlds.
01:17:06A good husband and a younger lover.
01:17:09I guess I didn't want to give up either one of them.
01:17:12Okay, but then why in her texts did she seem so happy to embark on a new life with Jonathan?
01:17:19Just after Rob's murder.
01:17:21Like when she wrote to him, I feel super blessed.
01:17:26So, 25 days after your husband was killed, you felt super blessed?
01:17:32No, I didn't.
01:17:34Well, what you wrote at the time, you felt super blessed.
01:17:40Well, I wasn't.
01:17:42And another text on that same day.
01:17:45I got something practical for you today in town.
01:17:49It will one day be something we share in our home.
01:17:55I don't remember what that was or why I wrote that.
01:17:59Well, wouldn't it make sense that you wrote that because you bought something to share in your home with Jonathan?
01:18:04That's what it sounds like there.
01:18:07According to the prosecutor, there was only one explanation for those texts.
01:18:12From all the texts we've just gone through recently, you had replaced Robert in essence.
01:18:17No, there's no replacing Robert ever.
01:18:20The prosecutor asked why, considering the relaxed rules of their marriage,
01:18:26she'd have to lie about her affair with Jonathan.
01:18:30Silver Lakes is a small community, is it not?
01:18:34Yes, it is.
01:18:36Everybody knows everybody's business, do they not?
01:18:39Yes, everybody's.
01:18:42So this concept that somehow you were concerned that other people would find out about it,
01:18:47everybody already knew about your lifestyle in Silver Lakes, did they not?
01:18:51Well, they weren't in the bedroom with us.
01:18:55Okay.
01:18:57We didn't invite all of Silver Lakes over.
01:19:00In her corner of Silver Lakes, she said, marriages may have been open, but affairs needed prior approval.
01:19:08I didn't have permission to go astray from our group of friends.
01:19:17So now it's your testimony that you had to be given permission to sleep around.
01:19:21Yes.
01:19:23You had to give you that permission.
01:19:25Robert?
01:19:27He controlled you.
01:19:29He was my husband, but he did not control me.
01:19:34It's a lifestyle that I don't expect people to understand.
01:19:38Your testimony is that everybody else decides everything that you do.
01:19:42Is that your testimony now?
01:19:44No.
01:19:45Okay, Jonathan Hearn controlled you.
01:19:47That was your testimony yesterday.
01:19:49No, Jonathan Hearn was controlling.
01:19:52Now your husband controls you.
01:19:53That's your testimony today.
01:19:55No, my husband was my husband.
01:19:57Okay.
01:19:58Do you make decisions on your own at any point?
01:20:02Yes, I sure do.
01:20:05Apparently many bad ones.
01:20:08Was Sabrina Lamone guilty of nothing more than colossally poor judgment
01:20:13or of something much more sinister?
01:20:16Each side made its closing arguments.
01:20:19Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
01:20:20Defense attorney Richard Terry reminded the jury
01:20:23the DA didn't have enough to charge Sabrina with anything
01:20:26until Jonathan Hearn pointed the finger at her.
01:20:30And that's when they made their deal with that devil,
01:20:33he, to save his own hide, came in and spun his story.
01:20:39Prosecutor Eric Smith begged to differ.
01:20:43This is not a case of he said, she said.
01:20:47This is a case of he said, she lied.
01:20:50That's what I'm calling it.
01:20:52She needs to be held accountable for what she did with Jonathan Hearn.
01:20:57She needs to be held accountable for letting her husband suffer.
01:21:02It took the jury less than seven hours to decide Sabrina's fate.
01:21:07We the jury and panel to try the above entitled case
01:21:10find the defendant, Sabrina Lamone, guilty of a felony to wit,
01:21:14murder of Robert Lamone.
01:21:16Of first degree murder and a litany of other charges,
01:21:20conspiracy, accessory, and solicitation to commit murder.
01:21:26Her only break, the jury found Sabrina not guilty
01:21:30of attempting to murder Rob with arsenic-laced banana pudding.
01:21:36Sabrina's former best friends, Kelly and Jason,
01:21:39say they felt satisfaction after a long fight to prove Sabrina's guilt.
01:21:45I would do it all again for Rob.
01:21:47He didn't deserve what happened to him.
01:21:51Rob would have done the same for us.
01:21:53We know he would.
01:21:55Sabrina was sentenced to 25 years to life.
01:21:59In 2022, an appellate court upheld her conviction.
01:22:03The Supreme Court has also denied her petition for review of the case.
01:22:07Her former lover Jonathan could be back on the street very soon.
01:22:11He is eligible for parole in November 2028.
01:22:15What do Sabrina and Robert's children say about this?
01:22:18They don't believe it, that Brina had anything to do with it.
01:22:22They know more than we.
01:22:25Wish they did.
01:22:26Exactly, yes.
01:22:29Kelly and Jason are now divorced.
01:22:32The wolf pack still exists, still hangs out,
01:22:35and still gathers to remember Rob Lamone.
01:22:38The lake remains their little oasis.
01:22:42But it's no longer the happiest place in the high desert.
01:22:47I look back at pictures and I see, like,
01:22:49we're just such a fun, loving group of people.
01:22:52After this, it's like you can barely trust anyone.
01:22:55And, you know, things just change.
01:23:01I mean, she broke all of our hearts.
01:23:04Not only were we just so devastated finding out who she really was,
01:23:07but we missed Rob so much.
