Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf has requested a trade, but he would come at a steep price. Should the Texans pursue it? In The Loop talked about that here.

00:00Ian Rappaport has some speculation with the Texans after some news came down yesterday.
00:05It was a newsy Wednesday, man, when it comes to these teams getting themselves prepared
00:09for the new league year and free agency.
00:13And one of the big names, there was a few wide receiver names.
00:15There was a Christian Kirk.
00:17There was a Tyler Lockett, who I already know I have to like do a disclosure up front that
00:21I have biases coming in as a K-State alum.
00:25But then DK Metcalfe came free and everybody's eyes got real big as if they were in a cartoon
00:32animated by Hanna-Barbera.
00:34Like we all got real, real, real excited.
00:36That's the new girl in the school.
00:38100%.
00:39Hey, oh, DK Metcalfe.
00:40New girl in class.
00:41Where she's from?
00:42Oh, okay.
00:43Yeah, let me talk to her.
00:44Screw you, Susie.
00:45Yeah, let me talk to her.
00:46It's a new girl here.
00:47Yeah.
00:48She cute.
00:49Let me see what she's talking about.
00:50Here's Ian Rappaport talking about who could possibly and who probably should be interested
00:54in trying to acquire the services of DK Metcalfe, who requested a trade.
00:58Receivers, as far as who might be interested, I would say the Chargers.
01:01If Sanjay Lau is a receivers coach, he'd probably be interested.
01:05Texans would be one.
01:06Patriots would be another.
01:07There's several teams, many teams.
01:10The Las Vegas Raiders, who have his own coach Pete Carroll.
01:12A lot of teams are going to be interested in DK Metcalfe.
01:14Hold on, hold on, hold on.
01:15Run that one over.
01:16Back that up to you.
01:17You ran right past that, Ian.
01:18You going to act like we're not even here?
01:20I mean, like I guess the Texans maybe, more detail on that.
01:27That's a good point because it makes sense with the Chargers.
01:30He laid that out.
01:31Obviously, Patriots.
01:32Yeah.
01:33Lots of money.
01:34Obviously, Raiders with Pete Carroll.
01:36There was no connection with the Texans.
01:38Yeah.
01:39Like there's no connect the dots kind of thing.
01:40I wonder if we kind of like little news like this because I feel like Nick Casario is the
01:44guy that check in on anything and might not be interested.
01:48You know how somebody walk up to you and be like, hey, are you interested?
01:51And you act like you're interested.
01:52You just kind of check it out knowing you probably ain't going to buy it.
01:56I wonder if he's that GM.
01:58I see your example and I raise you this one.
02:00Nick Casario is the dude who goes on Craigslist or I guess now Facebook Marketplace and just
02:06sends an offer.
02:08Just like try to lowball people.
02:09Just like, will you take a hundred for it?
02:11It's like, dog, I'm selling a Dodge right now.
02:14What are you talking about?
02:15All right, just wanted to see.
02:16150?
02:17The price is 500, man.
02:19He's trying to get over on somebody.
02:21So that's him checking in on something.
02:23And I'm not even saying that he's trying to get over on folks because that's, you know,
02:29he trying to find a sucker, man.
02:30He might be.
02:31And you know what?
02:32That's kind of his job, isn't it?
02:33Like, I feel like I'm not mad at it.
02:34You should be trying to find a sucker, right?
02:36See where you can hit for your lick.
02:38But I feel like he checks in, but I don't know that like he is the one in one of those
02:43places where he's absolutely diving in.
02:45And plus, one of the things that we know about the Texans is that, and this is why
02:49you have to, whenever you hear any level report, you have to consider, you know, who does it
02:53stand to benefit to hear this or, you know, for this to be heard or what have you.
02:57The Texans are notoriously tight-lipped.
02:59Yes.
03:00They keep, they keep a lot of their information in-house.
03:02This feels like where you just end up in going, yeah, they could use a wide receiver.
03:07Yeah.
03:08Well, I want to make two things very, very clear.
03:10You just touched on the first one.
03:11This is Ian Rappaport speculating.
03:15This isn't a report.
03:16This isn't a, you know, like I've heard this or that, although he did connect the dots
03:21with three of the teams that he mentioned that the one team that it didn't was the Houston
03:23Texans, which leads me to my second point.
03:26Every time something, somebody like this speculates on something, I always wonder like, who is
03:32it that's speculating?
03:33If it's, you know, some dude that is a part-time podcaster on the Texans, well then I don't
03:40put all due respect.
03:41I don't put as much credence into it as Ian Rappaport, because just for him, just for
03:46him to throw out the Texans name, you kind of have to start wondering, did he hear something?
03:53Is something that he may not be comfortable or have enough to, to report on, but he heard
03:57something.
03:58So that's why as much as it's speculation, I kind of think not that there's a lot to
04:03it, but that he's heard something about the Texans and DK Metcalf.
04:08Well, and, you know, Kick Rocks on the YouTube says maybe he threw the Texans in just because
04:13they were, you know, implicated in the Deebo Samuels negotiation.
04:18Obviously he ultimately ends up with the Commandos.
04:21I almost called him the Commandos because I always want to do it.
04:23It's more fun that way.
04:24I like it.
04:25You called them the Commodores.
04:26Oh wow.
04:27That's even better.
04:28Yeah, that's even better.
04:29I know that they play better, but I don't want to give them all that respect just yet.
04:32Not yet.
04:33Commandos.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Maybe we can get you to the Commodores at a later date.
04:36Yeah.
04:37That's a place.
04:38And somebody rightfully asks on the text line, do we even know that Seattle is going to be
04:45the only one?
04:46The Seattle Seahawks said that they will try and accommodate this request.
04:50Now in accommodating this request, you got to know what the cost actually is.
04:55We kind of made the jokes and the illusions of the idea of Nick checking in and just being
04:59like, I'll give you 10 cents on a dollar for it.
05:02That's not necessarily going to get it done.
05:04And in this instance, I think that this is where it falls apart for me.
05:07Yes.
05:08Diana Rossini, very well connected as an NFL insider.
05:11She does her work for The Athletic these days.
05:13In fact, she has a Scoop City podcast.
05:14It's pretty good as well.
05:17And she is reporting that the cost for DK Metcalf, understanding that he has one year
05:23of, you know, one year of time left on the current contract and he wants a deal, a first
05:30round pick and a third round pick.
05:35And then on top of all that, he's looking for 30 mil average annual value on the next
05:41deal, which I imagine he wants to do asaptually.
05:43Yes, absolutely.
05:45And this is where, this is where Nick say, all right, appreciate you, man.
05:48That's exactly right.
05:49I, you know, if that's what, if they can get that, first of all, I don't think they will
05:53get that.
05:54I mean, let's be, they, they won't get a first and a third for, for DK Metcalf.
05:59I just don't, I just don't see it happening.
06:00I do love, it feels like the text line and the YouTube look very much like a, have you
06:05played a poker game where somebody is just wiling with their bet and everybody's just
06:09like, well, throwing in the card.
06:10I'm out.
06:11You don't want Metcalf.
06:12I'm out.
06:13I'm good.
06:14Versus too much.
06:15Everybody immediately.
06:16Everybody voting.
06:17100%.
06:18Yeah.
06:19You, you and I are on the same page on this.
06:20Cause that, that's where I just go.
06:21You know what?
06:22If you can get that.
06:23Congratulations.
06:24We're out.
06:25Nah.
06:26We're out.
06:27I'm out.
06:28I'm out.
06:29I'm out going to a place like Carolina or something like that.
06:30Yeah, exactly.
06:31Or the Raiders.
06:32I mean, you can still come back to New England.
06:34Still makes a lot of sense.
06:35Or New England.
06:36Yeah.
06:37They're trying to build something with the young guy.
06:38They have the, the, the cap space to be able to accommodate the kind of payment that he
06:42wants.
06:43I imagine that they want that type of talent as a roster that was devoid of such outside
06:46of maybe just looking at the fact that they had a quarterback that was pretty good.
06:50Like they just look, you just looked up there and you go, Hey, maybe that works for them.
06:53He's able to get the money that he wants.
06:55He's able to, you know, have a, he's not going to compete necessarily.
06:58Early on, but he has a quarterback at least to work with.
07:01I could see that working out there, but I just don't see.
07:03Even with that first round pick, like if it's, let's say it's New England, like you send
07:08it.
07:09What were they picking fourth?
07:10I think they pick a third or fourth or whatever it is.
07:12I'm not sending that for DK Metcalf.
07:14It would have to be like a first round pick for next year, maybe a third this year.
07:19Right.
07:20And again, I feel like Lopez, the point that you made was a good one is that that's what
07:24they're asking for.
07:26The presumed ask is, it's not necessarily what they will get, but if that starting point
07:30is indicative of anything, I think it's indicative that it's too high.
07:33And honestly, the payment on the draft capital is not necessarily the one that gets me out.
07:38It probably is good enough to do that.
07:41Sure.
07:42It's the average annual value.
07:43Yeah.
07:44It's one of the things that with this team, we've kind of danced around.
07:46We talked a little bit on this program is just you, you have a lot of high, high level
07:52talent, a lot of high dollar talent on this team.
07:56Even if they're not being paid that yet on the horizon.
07:58We know that in this off season, there's the full expectation that Derek Stingley gets
08:01his high dollar value at the top of the month.
08:06Will Anderson Jr. still exists there to get his high dollar extension.
08:11Daniil Hunter, at the very worst, is in line for probably a restructuring.
08:17Probably if you believe, what is it, Sportskeeda that had reported that he is seeking an extension.
08:22It probably stands to make sense, a reason that that is worthwhile for both parties.
08:28You see the way that Daniil is playing.
08:29I think that it's worth giving him a few more years, keeping him happy, and then keeping
08:32him around.
08:33Especially knowing that D'Amico loves having a fantastic pass rush.
08:37It seems like he would be able to do that for the next two, three, four years, or what
08:40have you.
08:41I think that that makes sense.
08:43How many other guys do we need to talk about?
08:45I know Kamari is still a little farther out.
08:46Oh yeah, that's right.
08:47The quarterback.
08:48You're not far out from him.
08:50You cannot have everybody paid at the high level, because at that point you then ask,
08:54how much do you have to pay for the rest of the roster, and then will you have a roster
08:58that's just incredibly top-heavy, that's not able to sustain everything.
09:00I don't know that the secondary wide receiver is the place where you have to break the bank
09:04in that way.
09:05No, but I mean, as you pointed out, if you can get him, what did Debo get, a fifth?
09:11Yes.
09:12And you want a first and a third?
09:14Like they have to be, they, they, they, they, you gotta ask, right?
09:16Yeah, no, they're, you know, they have to be reasonable here at some point.
09:19So I don't necessarily think it blows the Texans out of the water.
09:23It's just, you know, I think you, they just have to go back there and say, look, we really
09:26think he can do this, this, and this with CJ Stroud.
09:29We'll give you a third.
09:30That's it.
09:32And then we'll take on the, you know, the, the money or whatever then.
09:34Okay.
09:35Then, then we can talk a little bit, but, uh, no, I, I just first and a third.
09:39Good luck.
09:40I feel like some of these bad things, I don't want to call them bad things, but probably
09:46we are willing to at least give them a first away for it.
09:50And that's when the Texans are probably out.
09:52Yeah.
09:53Yeah.
09:54And look, I know that Nick Casario has sung the praise of Howie Roseman, the executive
10:00for the Eagles, this, uh, at the combine.
10:04I understand corporate on YouTube saying, well, the Eagles find a way to pay everybody.
10:07To some extent they let guys go.
10:09And one of the things they're also doing is they're making sure to bring in more young
10:12talent, which I think is why those picks, those draft picks end up being more necessary
10:16and why you should not, especially double pay at the very least.
10:19But with that being the case, I think that we're, we've laid it out very clearly.
10:23Why DK Metcalf, not, not the one that you want.
10:25All right.
10:26So if that's not, if that's not the place that you go, why receiver wise, who is your
10:30target?
10:31Cause I know someone kick rocks on the, on the, on the YouTube saying that Godwin is
10:34the one for him.
10:35I don't know that you're getting, you're touching Godwin.
10:37I think Godwin is going to stay because that's money.
10:40That's going to be a big time.
10:42Uh, look, we're going to get into some, some value picks, especially at the wide receiver
10:46position.
10:47Um, I still think, you know, maybe there's something out there with Christian Kirk, uh,
10:52you know, uh, obviously, uh, Lockett, you know, would be the two that I would look at
10:56because of the upside and, and, and, you know, certainly, you know, the ability that the
11:00proven ability, uh, in this league, and they can be a number two, you don't need a number
11:03one wide receiver.
11:04DK Metcalf would be a luxury.
11:07You would have two number one ride receivers and you'd be, you know, awesome, but you don't,
11:12you'd be looking for a number two.
11:13That's where I would land, you know, maybe, maybe a Kirk, maybe, uh, uh, maybe a Lockett.
11:18I think that Seth put something out that was really interesting, uh, that got me really
11:25going.
11:26Uh, he, he tied it back to the combine where we heard from head coach of the Texas D'Amico
11:31Ryan.
11:32This is D'Amico.
11:33Ryan's talking about what he is looking for, uh, when you talk about a wide receiver in
11:36this offense.
11:37Yeah.
11:38With the receiver position, we're looking for guys who are separators, right?
11:41Who can separate, who can find a way to get open.
11:43Right.
11:44And if you have that one redeeming quality that you can separate, right, that's what
11:48we're looking for.
11:49Especially that shows up on third down.
11:51Right.
11:52How do you win third down?
11:53How do you stay on the field as an offense?
11:55Right.
11:56And continue to produce, uh, and move the ball down the field.
11:59It's about third down.
12:00Right.
12:01And being able to convert.
12:02And the way you convert is guys who are savvy enough to find a way to always get open.
12:08So you have that.
12:09Mm-hmm.
12:10You start looking at the separators.
12:11And of course, again, Seth did a fantastic job here, um, laying out the people who had
12:15the best separation.
12:17I'm guessing this is per, uh, NFL, or sorry, next-gen stats.
12:21Mm-hmm.
12:22Cooper Cup is at the top of that, uh, at the top of the list of kind of some of those guys
12:26that are out there when it, you know, nearest defender, yards between them and the nearest
12:31defender would have you.
12:32Cooper Cup is high.
12:33Godwin's also high.
12:34Devontae Adams is high.
12:35Elijah Moore is high.
12:36But then you get to Stephon Diggs, and I think that I've, we've all kind of largely in the
12:41same place where I think a lot of people are okay with him returning.
12:43Yeah.
12:44With that same level of separation as Stephon Diggs had, Keenan Allen was a guy that I had
12:50not given enough consideration playing there with Chicago last year.
12:54And that was somebody Nick Caceria tried to get too.
12:56Yeah.
12:57Remember we had this conversation.
12:58He tried to get him before, uh, before Stephon Diggs.
13:00We had this conversation last year.
13:01So Stephon Diggs was plan B.
13:05And I was on Allen, uh, yeah.
13:07Three yards between he and the nearest defender, uh, at the catch or in completion.
13:12Uh, I, I'm with you.
13:15You're in on Keenan Allen now?
13:16I think I'm in on Keenan Allen, especially now with, he missed him a little, he missed
13:20a little time when he's playing with the Chargers.
13:21That's value to me.
13:23But I think that there's some value there.
13:24And when he was playing with the Chargers, still produced at a high level last year,
13:27that production went down, but that's in a Chicago offense that one was ran by Shane
13:31Waldron, which I don't know how excited I was about that to begin with.
13:34Yeah.
13:36That was a rookie quarterback.
13:37And on top of that, a rookie quarterback that was not protected, not protected to the point
13:39where they traded for not one, but two guards at high, uh, at high cost in this off season,
13:44just to remedy that.
13:45I think that that speaks to the ways in which that offense was not going to be optimized.
13:50And this is an offense that I imagine is going to be optimized, especially playing opposite
13:53Nico Collins.
13:54I think he still gives you all the things that you're looking for.
13:56And I think that the price might be a little depressed, especially as you look at the market
13:59as a whole.
14:00I think Keenan Allen might be a guy that I'm starting to really, uh, have a little bit
14:04of a football crush on.
14:05How about those guys at the top of the list?
14:06Just looking at them, you know, people talk about who are the best route runners, route
14:10runners, you know, that don't necessarily have to be the fastest, but the best routes,
14:14all five of those guys are generally put in that, in that category.
14:18But if you, if you were a Cooper cup truther, there's another good reason to look at three
14:23yards, right?
14:24On top of the idea that there's, there's likely to be a level of, um, I don't know, comfort
14:30with whatever Nick Haley brings.
14:31I mean, even if it's not wholesale Los Angeles Rams offense, it's going, there's going to
14:37be some similarities at the very least, maybe terminology or what have you.
14:40Like you imagine that there's going to be a easier uptake getting, I mean, that also
14:46gives you another reason to look there, but I mean, all of these points though, I just,
14:50I think it's worth circling back to remembering.
14:52I don't think the, I think the DK Metcalf thing is one of those things that you just
14:55open your eyes.
14:56You enjoy looking, but you don't go talk to that girl.
14:59You let that girl over there do what she's doing or, or have you been in like Sam's or
15:03something like that?
15:04And somebody tried to say you a TV or something like that.
15:06It's usually, it's usually a phone.
15:08It's usually like, well, who do you have for your phone service?
15:10And then they give you that price, that high ass price and you're like, yeah, I can't do
15:15it right now.
15:16Yeah.
15:17Thanks.
15:18But no thanks.
15:19Yeah.
15:20But you checked in on it.
15:21Just trying to see what they was talking.
15:22It's just like, nah, thanks.
15:23But no thanks.
15:24I do wonder if that was what, uh, what Joe Mixon was alluding to yesterday.
15:28Joe Mixon said, Oh my goodness.
15:30Imagine Nico and nevermind.
15:32Just wait on it.
15:33What are you doing to us right now?
15:36Are you talking about?
15:37I hate what players do that, man.
15:39They do it all the time now.
15:40It's crazy.
15:41I mean, the eyes emoji, eyes emoji, eyes emoji drives me nuts.
15:46Tell me what it means.
15:47Joe Mixon.
15:48Yeah.
15:49You're in the loop right here on sports radio.
