The Bengals and Eagles are having to make difficult business decisions this offseason. The Texans will soon be in a similar place. Payne & Pendergast talk about it here.
Transcript
00:00that. Warren Sharp posted this
00:05at sharp football, and he said
00:07this is wild. The Bengals and
00:09Eagles both signed their
00:10quarterbacks to extensions in
00:112023. Now the reason I'm
00:13bringing this up is. The
00:15Texans are about to be at least
00:17from a roster construction
00:19standpoint, the Bengals and the
00:21Eagles from the standpoint of
00:23teams that have a lot of very
00:25good players that they've
00:26drafted that they've nurtured
00:27in house or that they've
00:28brought in, maybe like the
00:29Bengals and the Eagles. So
00:31it's about keeping your own
00:32when it comes to what I'm about
00:33to say here now. Hopefully
00:34they're like both of these
00:35teams and that they make a
00:36Super Bowl in the next couple
00:37of years. Bengals made it a few
00:38years ago. Eagles defending
00:39Super Bowl champs. Warren
00:41Sharp. This is wild. The
00:42Bengals and the Eagles both
00:43signed their QBs to extensions
00:44in 2023. Jalen hurts with the
00:46Eagles. Joe Burrow with the
00:48Bengals, and they both made well
00:50over 50 million in average
00:51annual value or are making on
00:53their new extensions. Since
00:55then, the Bengals have re signed
00:57a contract of over 40 million
00:59dollars overall overall money.
01:01I'm guessing maybe guaranteed
01:02money. Logan Wilson. The Eagles
01:04have re signed in the same time
01:06period, Seth. Eight players to
01:09contracts with values of
01:10greater than 40 million dollars.
01:12A.J. Brown, Landon Dickerson,
01:14Lane Johnson, Devante Smith,
01:16Jordan Milata, Zach Bond,
01:18Darius Slay, and Saquon Barkley.
01:20We should point out they cut
01:21Darius Slay earlier this week.
01:23I think it's also worth
01:24pointing out three of those are
01:25offensive linemen and two of
01:26them are wide receivers. You
01:27know, kind of a, you know,
01:28worth noting. You know what?
01:30It's, it's interesting because
01:32it's easy right now to just
01:33point to the Eagles and say,
01:36hey, that is, there's different
01:38ways to do it. The Patriots were
01:40a team that was always super,
01:42super careful with their money.
01:44Wouldn't spend liberally in free
01:45agency or anything. Would let
01:46veterans walk out the door.
01:48They did have the benefit of
01:49having one of the all time best
01:50defensive coaches and having a
01:52guy named Tom Brady on their
01:53team. So it's hard to follow
01:55that model to the core, but
01:56there's other teams that have
01:57done it really well being more
01:59conservative. There's other
02:00teams like the Eagles that
02:01they've got who might, the guy
02:03who might be the Howie, the Tom
02:05Brady of GMs and Howie Roseman.
02:07I think it's fair enough to say
02:09that the Bengals at no point in
02:12the past 30 years has anybody
02:14thought that the Bengals have
02:16operated anywhere close to the
02:17way Howie Roseman or Bill
02:19Belichick have operated. So it's
02:21it gets frustrating if you're a
02:23Bengals fan that like, all
02:24right, man, I appreciate you
02:26being careful with your money
02:27and everything, but my God,
02:29we've got players beating down
02:30the doors to get the hell out of
02:32here or that don't want to come
02:33here. And they've spent more
02:34aggressively though over the
02:36past since before they got Joe
02:38Burrow. Yeah. They just, they
02:39don't want to, it doesn't seem
02:41like they've got it in him to
02:42really make that one last push.
02:44Yes. Yeah. The way the Eagles
02:46have done it various times.
02:47Well, they're, they're giving
02:48Trey Hendrickson, one of the
02:49best pass rushers in the league
02:50permission to go find a trade
02:52with the Bengals. So that would
02:54I, my guess is that wouldn't
02:56happen on Howie Roseman's watch
02:58in a million years, they would
02:59find a way to keep the best.
03:01Yeah. The biggest sack artist of
03:03the last two years, the Bengals
03:05are, they, they've spent, they're
03:07like middle of the road. I'd
03:09have to look at it as Texans cap
03:10to be specific about this. They
03:12haven't been a stingy franchise.
03:14I think it's, yeah, several
03:18reasons. They're about middle of
03:19the pack in terms of how much
03:21they're willing to pay. But I
03:22think it's a, it's just a
03:23different realm when it comes to
03:24paying guys that are your own.
03:26And they seem to be like a more
03:28is the, they're, they're still
03:30stingy in some regards where it
03:32feels like, all right, they
03:33don't want to, they don't want
03:34to reward the guys. They're very
03:36grudging to reward the guys who
03:38have demonstrated that they're
03:39worth the high draft pick and
03:41everything else. I don't want to
03:42get too deep in the salary cap
03:43mark. The salary cap is a real
03:44thing. Despite what you may hear
03:45on the internet out there, it
03:46does exist. However, there are
03:48ways to work your way around it.
03:50For teams that are willing to
03:51spend a ton of cash in the now,
03:53which the Bengals are not to your
03:56point in the upper tier of those
03:57things, they're, you know,
03:58they're more free spending than
03:59they used to be, but not nearly
04:01as free spending as others, the
04:02Eagles and Jeffrey Lurie, their
04:04owner and Howie Roseman, their
04:05GM in the state they're in right
04:07now, where they're maybe the
04:08most talented team top to bottom
04:10roster wise in the NFL, they're
04:12willing to go balls to the wall
04:14to give Saquon another 40
04:16million to give Zach bomb 50
04:18million, you know, 34
04:19guaranteed, whatever it is. My
04:21that that requires an owner who
04:23is willing to in the short term
04:26have to spend a lot of cash. You
04:28know, the cap will be the great
04:29equalizer over time, but the
04:31Eagles are spending a ton right
04:32now to jam it into way down the
04:34road credit card. I guess my
04:36question would be what like
04:37what's our sense on the Texans
04:39both from a standpoint of Nick
04:40Casario and his and by proxy
04:44D'Amico Ryan's because they work
04:45in tandem with one another, but
04:47particularly Casario because he's
04:48responsible for the cap. What's
04:50his appetite for doing what Howie
04:51Roseman does and kicking the can
04:53down the road with a lot of that
04:57they may need to do that to keep
04:58all the guys that they have right
05:00now. They've got a lot of guys
05:01who are good and can can with the
05:03other things that's real quick
05:04and what is Cal McNair's appetite
05:07for spending the short-term cash
05:09necessary to do all these things.
05:11I feel like they've already
05:12demonstrated that Casario's
05:14strategy is to just go ahead and
05:16give big money, but on with lots
05:19of guaranteed money, but on
05:20shorter-term contracts. Yeah, the
05:22question would be okay when so
05:24they're totally willing to spend
05:25and I think Cal's demonstrated
05:27Cal has demonstrated that he's
05:30very much willing to spend and
05:31listen to the football people,
05:33which was a bad thing when Jackie
05:34used to be was around and Bill
05:35O'Brien was a co-GM. That was a
05:37bad thing, but it was it was
05:39still good that you had an owner
05:41who was willing to let his
05:42football people do football
05:43things. You just got to find the
05:44right football people. So I think
05:46that Cal is going to be willing
05:47to do whatever Casario wants to
05:49do. So that's the real question
05:51is hey, Casario has spent big
05:54money on shorter-term contracts.
05:56He did already renegotiate to
05:58Sean Watson or no, that was
05:59used to be. Sorry. He didn't do
06:01that. So he should be did to
06:02Sean Watson deal. So but Cal
06:04demonstrated that he was Cal
06:06demonstrated. He was totally
06:07willing to pay to Sean Watson.
06:08Yeah, and when that that that
06:10So I'm not worried about that
06:11at all. I don't think that if
06:12the Texans get to a point where
06:13hey, they they make a couple of
06:14AFC championship games, but
06:15you've got these guys coming up.
06:16I think they'll make that either
06:17ill-advised or courageous push
06:18into spending money into the
06:19future because Cal's been around
06:20a long enough now to know and
06:21understand also that yeah,
06:22sometimes it doesn't do the East
06:23Board or sometimes you're like
06:24the various types of players
06:25that you're going to have to
06:26spend a lot of money on and
06:27sometimes you're going to have
06:28to spend a lot of money on
06:29something that you're going to
06:30spend a lot of money on and
06:31sometimes you're going to have
06:32to spend a lot of money on
06:33something that you're going to
06:34spend a lot of money on and
06:36sometimes it doesn't do the
06:37East Board or sometimes you're
06:39like the various other majority
06:41of teams where it doesn't work
06:42out and you've got to hit a
06:43reset a couple years down the
06:44road. I think in terms of the
06:46appetite to do whatever it
06:47takes cash wise and financially
06:50to win. I think the McNair's
06:52skew way more towards the
06:54Jeffrey Lurie end of this
06:55fictitious spectrum. We've just
06:57created here with this word
06:58sharp tweet. If it's the
06:59Bengals Eagles spectrum, we're
07:01talking about the low end and
07:02the high end and I know the
07:03Bengals are better than they
07:04used to be but for purposes of
07:05this conversation, contenders
07:07I'll put them at that end
07:08because they've only retained
07:09one of these guys. It's about
07:10to be two or three once they
07:12sign Jamar Chase and presumably
07:14T Higgins. I think they're way
07:17more at the Eagles end of the
07:18willingness to do that than
07:20they are the Bengals end of the
07:21way. I had a really
07:22interesting conversation with
07:23Eric Winston once when I can't
07:26remember if it was right after
07:27he retired or while he was still
07:29with the Bengals but he said
07:31that the Bengals were such a
07:32weird team because they were so
07:34stingy and yet at the same time
07:36they would hold on to guys like
07:38Eric Winston. Eric was talking
07:39about himself like with a lot of
07:41humility basically saying like
07:43you know, I the last couple
07:45years I've been thinking about
07:46retiring but the Bengals kind of
07:48just like if they like you
07:50they'll keep you around and I
07:52think what Eric was saying was I
07:54don't think I'm worth the money
07:55they're paying me and I kind of
07:57like to retire but it's a lot of
07:59money. Yeah, it wasn't a
08:01lucrative contract or anything.
08:04He was a blue collar player that
08:06they liked as a veteran and they
08:08just they kept him around longer
08:10than then probably a lot of other
08:12teams would have. That's
08:13interesting. So it's it's it's a
08:17weird. Was that when Winston was
08:19the president of the Players
08:20Association? Yeah. Is that okay?
08:23Because that may have been one of
08:24those because I think he was
08:25right up until he retired. Yeah,
08:26that may be one of those for the
08:28Brown family, the owners of the
08:29Bengals. Let's keep our friends
08:31close and our enemies closer.
08:33Yeah, they probably had his
08:34phones tasked. Yeah, man. Yeah,
08:36Eric, we're going to give you
08:37five million dollars. Here's a
08:39new cell phone as well. It's on
08:41our account. I could see Bengals
08:43ownership being like so
08:45antiquated. They're like, well,
08:46we can't know just tap his
08:48landline. No, no, we can't be
08:50paying for it costs a lot more
08:51to tap his cell phone. We don't
08:53want that. They have a big
08:54Bengal stripe van outside his
08:56house. Three Brown family members
08:59with headphones on in there like
09:00in the listening to listening to
09:02your phone. Yeah, I'm talking
09:03about calls from telemarketers
09:07talking to Eric Winston talking
09:08to his mom or something like
09:09that. Um, let's see. As much as
09:13we talk about football, people
09:14just want to weigh in on what
09:15their first cars were. Uh, I had
09:17a 79 Camaro with a straight 63
09:20speed on the floor that my dad
09:23got. I don't even know what this
09:24means that my dad got drunk and
09:26bought for $100 for me. Okay,
09:28that part I know what means your
09:30dad got drunk and bought you a
09:32Camaro. Um, first car in 91 and
09:3581 Oldsmobile 88 known as junk
09:38mobile had to start it with a
09:40screwdriver. Oh yeah. Man, I
09:44miss those days. The cars that
09:45you would start with a
09:46screwdriver. Yeah. Those are the
09:48best. You see that a lot on
09:49farms on old, uh, old equipment.
09:51You got to start it with a
09:52screwdriver. Yeah. Yeah. Oh,
09:54that's awesome. Yeah. It was a
09:58note. Somebody knew you. What's
09:59the, um, what's the number of
10:01years? I mean, the actual year
10:02you got your first car and the
10:04year that the car was actually
10:05manufactured to where you can
10:07maintain that you are living a
10:08blue collar lifestyle. You know
10:10what I mean? Like, I feel like
10:11at least 10, right? Yeah. I
10:13think, I think 10 feels. Yeah.
10:14Like I, you know, like if you're
10:16if it's like, you know, it's
10:171995 and you're like, yeah, my
10:18first car was a brand new 95.
10:20Whatever. I'm like spoiled
10:22spoiled. That's why I felt like
10:24I got such a good deal on my 82
10:26miles to GLC. Cause that would
10:27have been in 1992. Yeah. Yeah.
10:30So like, it was a, it was
10:31pretty, it was doing all right
10:32that it, it had over a hundred
10:34thousand miles on it, but it was
10:35an 82. Yeah. You know? Yeah.
10:37Mine was a, I had an 11 year
10:38Delta. I got my, I got my
10:39license in 85 and I had a 74
10:42Plymouth gold duster. You just
10:44don't, there's one thing that
10:46you just don't see as many
10:47hoopties around these days. You
10:48don't. I, you know, they
10:50started manufacturing cars so
10:51that they don't, they don't rust
10:53as easily. They're like the
10:55water drains better and
10:56everything. So they just say
10:58we've gotten spoiled. I need to
10:59see more children driving
11:01incredibly unsafe vehicles.
11:02Yeah. I remember driving in my
11:04mom's car when I was like six
11:05or seven years old, we had a
11:06car that the floor in the back
11:09seat had rusted out. The floor
11:11of my duster had rusted out.
11:12Yeah. You could see the, you
11:14could see the road as you're
11:15driving along. Dude. Yeah. When
11:17it rained, there would be drops
11:19coming out from like underneath
11:20the, like the part underneath
11:21the steering wheel where my
11:22feet were. Oh, you get spray
11:24coming up. Like, you know, like
11:25drips coming down like towards
11:28my feet, like out from like
11:29underneath, like underneath,
11:31like where my feet were
11:32underneath the steering column
11:33there. Yeah.
11:39Incredibly, if you ever let me
11:40drive this thing, I have no idea.
11:42Well, there was so much more of
11:43a sense of adventure when you'd
11:44go on a road trip because you
11:46didn't know if you were going
11:47to make it. Dude. And if you
11:48broke down, there were no cell
11:50phones. Driving to school was a
11:52road trip for me. It was, I,
11:54one time my mom got so mad. My
11:56car just died in the middle of
11:57a busy intersection right near
11:59our school. And I just left it
12:00there and called my mom from the
12:01pay phone in the lobby. I'm like
12:02mom, you got to call AAA and
12:04come get my car. I put the
12:05hazards on and I walked to
12:06school. I was not missing class
12:08on behalf of that crappy car.
12:09You left it in the middle of the
12:10road? I got, I was managed to, I
12:11managed to veer it over to the
12:13side, sort of. It was
12:15disrupting traffic though. Me and
12:17my brother got out and walked to
12:18school. What else am I going to
12:19do? You could have pushed it off
12:21the road. There, trust me, there
12:23was no. Oh, there was no way to
12:24do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got
12:26it. Yeah, there was nowhere to
12:27put it. Um, it wasn't like in the
12:29middle of the intersection, but
12:30it was disrupting. It was like
12:31in the right lane and everybody's
12:32having to kind of squeeze around
12:34and if you wanted to go right,
12:35you had to go around the
12:36Pender mobile to turn right.
12:38Yeah. Yeah. At that
12:39intersection. Um, keep texting
12:40him in, man. We're highly
12:42entertained by everybody's first
12:43vehicle. What happened? What
12:44happened with the car? Did your
12:45mom set up a tow truck? She did.
12:47She called AAA and got it done.
12:48My mom, you got to, you got to
12:50school and then called your mom.
12:51Yeah. Did you call from a pay
12:52phone or did you go to the
12:53office to use the school phone?
12:55Pay phone. Yeah. Pay phone. Pay
12:56phone right in the lobby. There
12:57are three bank of pay phones
12:58right there in the lobby of old
12:59Simsbury high school. Yeah, I
13:00remember, but it's usually
13:01outside the school office. Yes.
13:03Sometimes you could go, uh,
13:04yeah. Sometimes you could make a
13:05call from the school office for
13:06certain things. Otherwise you
13:07had to use the pay phone. Yeah,
13:08I was, I was rolling in dough
13:09back then. I just dropped the
13:10dime in the, uh, pay phone. I
13:11spent the dime on it, man. Uh,
13:16a dime. Yeah. Yeah. I was
13:17thinking it was a quarter, but
13:18you could do it for a dime.
13:19Quarter. You get a little more
13:20time. If you were calling long
13:21distance, kids gather around.
13:22This is the time to do it.
13:23I haven't gotten a collect call
13:24in forever. I'm giving you one
13:25today.
