00:08Texans breaking news. Alright,
00:09if you missed it, previous
00:11segment came down. The news
00:14Derrick Stingley Junior becomes
00:17the highest paid defensive back
00:21in the history of the NFL by if
00:23we're going by average annual
00:25value by a pretty tidy sum. He
00:28has a three year $90 million
00:32contract. Derrick Stingley is
00:34with nearly all of it
00:35guaranteed 89 million
00:37guaranteed according to
00:39according to Adam Schefter.
00:40Here's the tweet report record
00:42deal. Texans all pro
00:43cornerback Derrick Stingley
00:44Junior has agreed to a three
00:45year $90 million extension
00:47including $89 million
00:49guaranteed a $30 million base.
00:53Value per year in L history.
00:54The cornerback market has been
00:56completely reset. So the same
00:58thing happened. To the non QB
01:02market with Miles Garrett. Uh
01:05a week ago, he's getting 40
01:07million a year and it jumped
01:09over Justin Jefferson. That's
01:11happening by even a bigger
01:12percentage in the cornerback
01:13market now. The highest paid
01:16corner before this news was JC
01:18Horn and I think Derrick
01:19Stingley Junior is is is a
01:22significant bump above JC Horn
01:25and Seth. I think that's what's
01:26reflected here is at the top of
01:27the cornerback market had
01:29those days where you got guys
01:30who are good players kind of
01:31jumping over each other like a
01:33little bit and the fact of the
01:35matter is that Derrick Stingley
01:37Junior is he's not $100,000
01:40better than better than JC
01:42Horn when healthy. He's way
01:44better than JC Horn. We're
01:46right and I think that's that's
01:48a big question and we wondered
01:49how would the health factor into
01:51this and that Derrick Stingley
01:53last year had his first fully
01:55healthy season and he was an
01:56all pro and he'd shown the
01:58potential at that level before
01:59he just hadn't been able to stay
02:01on the field. So you can see
02:02from the Texans perspective.
02:04They might be a little bit
02:05nervous about giving guy a long
02:07extension if if you you hasn't
02:10had multiple healthy seasons
02:12and this goes back to his
02:13college days as well. But it
02:15also it also is something that
02:18Casario has been doing pretty
02:20consistently starting with
02:22Laramie Tunsil and then with
02:23other guys like Nico Collins and
02:25other players when he extends
02:27he's not going to give him a
02:29four or five year extension.
02:31It's a three year that carried
02:34on the stick. It allows you to
02:36plan more in the short term and
02:38keep cap space. You know you're
02:39not kicking a bunch of spending
02:41down the road. So I like it.
02:43I'm a fan of it for NFL players
02:45who have been whining forever
02:47about not having guaranteed
02:48contracts. You can get you can
02:50get a guaranteed contract. You
02:51just got to sign a shorter term
02:53deal. Neil Hunter did it last
02:54year. Yeah. Neil Hunter's
02:55contract was almost completely
02:56guaranteed on a two year deal.
02:58Nick obviously did that deal as
03:00well. So I like it. I'm really
03:02excited for Derek Stingley. I
03:04think he's the classic kind of
03:06guy that will probably work out
03:08two extra hours today instead of
03:10to sell instead of instead of
03:12planning a trip to Egypt or
03:13something. He's probably gonna
03:15feel that much hungrier to prove
03:17that he's worth the money. So
03:18it's the right kind of guy to
03:20give an extension like this.
03:21He's he is not going to drop off
03:23and work one single bit. He
03:25probably won't. Here's Derek
03:27Stingley Jr. On the Pivot
03:29podcast earlier this offseason
03:31actually Super Bowl week in
03:34Louisiana where Stingley is from
03:36on him wanting to be a Texan for
03:38the rest of his career. How
03:40important is it for you to get a
03:42deal done and remain a Houston
03:44Texan? Well, I mean, I want to
03:46stay in Houston for I mean, the
03:49rest of my career really the
03:50deal, you know, the deal going
03:51to happen when it happen. You
03:52know, we still got to take care
03:53of business. I still got to work
03:54I still got to be there. Nico
03:55Collins when he was doing all
03:57that last year every day. I'm in
03:59there working out. I see him
04:00working out. So like, you know,
04:02that's the standard that we got
04:03over there with the Texans. So
04:05that's what I'm trying to keep
04:06on doing. All right. So that was
04:08that was Stingley, you know, he
04:09wants to be here. It's man. It's
04:13it back and look at the journey
04:15to arrive at this contract where
04:18the night that Stingley was
04:19picked third overall that that
04:21was I don't want to say it was
04:22out of nowhere. But that was
04:24like Stingley was like if it was
04:26a horse race to see who the
04:27Texans were taking with that
04:28third pick in the draft back in
04:302022 Stingley was like the horse
04:32coming up on the outside at the
04:34very end. Like it was it was
04:36mildly surprising. I think that
04:38Stingley ended up being the guy
04:39only because to your point, he
04:41had been injured for the last
04:44two years. He was at LSU, you
04:46know until this past season. He
04:48hadn't played a full season of
04:49good football since his freshman
04:51year in college. And I guess
04:53that might be something that is
04:54you as I say those things, maybe
04:56maybe makes this contract a
04:57little scary. I like to think
04:58that maybe, you know, he figured
05:00some things out his body state
05:01and you know, he played all 17
05:02games last year. It's not for a
05:04lack of work that he had health
05:06issues. He's in the building
05:07there at NRG Stadium, according
05:09to Nick and others every single
05:11day working out. He is a junkie
05:13when it comes to football and
05:15the things that go into being
05:16good at football. But I remember
05:18the night that he was drafted.
05:20And it was a little surprising.
05:22It was Stingley, but I was cool
05:24with it. And I remember Nick in
05:26the war room that night and
05:27there's video of this out there.
05:29Him talking to Cal and Hannah
05:31and explaining the selection to
05:33them. And the one thing Nick
05:35said is, this is a guy that just
05:37doesn't grow on trees. You know,
05:39he's unique. Well, I think that
05:41when you watch Stingley play
05:42compared to a guy like sauce
05:43Gardner, who's a very, he's got
05:45a very grabby brand of football
05:47that sometimes it's hard to
05:49describe, but it's a brand that
05:51sometimes comes and goes with
05:53its effect. Depending on how
05:55they used to officiate. With
05:57Stingley, he's a pure cover
05:59cornerback. The way he operates,
06:01how comfortable he is, just
06:03moving in 19 different
06:05directions out of his back
06:07pedal. He does a lot of things
06:09really, really well. And then
06:11his ball tracking is what really
06:13puts him over the top. His
06:15ability to make plays on the
06:17receiver himself. A lot of
06:19times, a lot of times,
06:20especially if he's got, if he's
06:22got a receiver figured out, he's
06:24running the receivers route
06:25better than the receiver himself
06:27is. It's all those things where
06:29you just look at it. And when
06:30you watch him play, you say,
06:32that's a true professional
06:33cornerback. And it's just a
06:34matter of keeping him healthy.
06:36The big thing is in his ability
06:40to stay healthy. I think that
06:43all of those things that
06:44sometimes you hear younger
06:45players learning about how to
06:46recover, how to handle the week,
06:48just how much should you exert
06:50yourself versus overdoing it,
06:51all of that. Hopefully he's
06:53learned a lot of that over the
06:54first couple seasons and that it
06:56wasn't just dumb luck that he
06:57was healthy this year. But on
07:00the professionalism side of it
07:02and the work side of it, he is
07:04kind of like it will be with
07:05Will Anderson, I think. He's
07:07everything you want in terms of
07:09a guy who just lives, eats, and
07:11breathes football. And the
07:13money's going to be really nice
07:14for him. But you've never gotten
07:16the sense that that's what's
07:17driving him, that more than
07:19anything, I think he just wants
07:20to be a great cornerback.
07:21I agree. I wholeheartedly agree.
07:23And I will go back to the
07:26detail I pointed out a few
07:28minutes ago, that last week,
07:33where he became clearly the
07:37highest paid non-quarterback in
07:39the sport at $40 million a year,
07:41immediately articles coming out,
07:43an article in The Athletic
07:44coming out about maybe how he's
07:46been lacking some
07:47professionalism over the last
07:48couple years, late to meetings,
07:50not going to mandatory stuff,
07:52stuff like that. I listened in
07:53on Cleveland this morning, and
07:55Miles Garrett got asked about
07:57that at his press conference
07:58last Friday about this
07:59extension, and he next
08:00questioned the guy.
08:01Really?
08:02Yes. And he next questioned the
08:04guy. And the hosts on the
08:06Cleveland Morning Show, Ken
08:07Carman and Anthony Lima, they
08:10made a great point, which is
08:12nobody has come out on social
08:14media, Miles Garrett's teammates
08:16and said it's not true. We see
08:18that all the time. No reporters,
08:20no teammates have come out and
08:22said that it's not true. And
08:24Jason Lloyd, who wrote the
08:25article, is clearly getting it
08:27from somebody who is probably
08:28still in the building with Miles
08:30Garrett. I bring this up, not
08:32because we're not Cleveland
08:33Radio, I get it, but Derek
08:35Stingley Jr.'s contract is in
08:37lives in the same neighborhood
08:39as Miles Garrett's contract,
08:41and you hear not a peep about
08:43nor from Derek Stingley Jr.
08:45about anything. This is a dream
08:47player. Other than the
08:48medicals, you know, before last
08:50year, this is a dream player,
08:52and hopefully the medicals from
08:542024 are now the trend, not the
08:56exception.
08:57Yeah, this is, you know what,
08:59in terms of how do you approach
09:01the offseason, obviously, this
09:03is going to create, I'm guessing
09:05not any cap issues this year.
09:07Typically, these are extensions
09:09that kick in a year down the
09:11road.
09:12So it might actually create a
09:14little bit of cap space this
09:16year. I do, I do, on the
09:19Casario side of things, I really
09:21do like his practicality, I
09:23think, in the way he handles
09:25extensions and contracts like
09:27this. It's that you're going to
09:29be, you're exposing yourself to
09:31some risk because you're paying
09:33a boatload of money, and you're
09:34paying a boatload of money, but
09:36it's manageable in the short
09:38term, and for any player, not
09:40just Derrick Singley with his
09:42injury history, any player at
09:44all, there's, if you get great
09:46play out of him over the course
09:48of three years, so whether it's
09:50Derrick Singley or Niko Collins
09:52or Daniil Hunter or anybody
09:54else, it's manageable, and you
09:56know what you're dealing with.
09:58It's the opposite of kicking the
10:00can down the road in the way
10:02they're doing now, where they
10:04just keep kicking the can down
10:06the road, and it gets harder and
10:08harder to manage. If you've got
10:10a good quarterback, and you're
10:12getting good play out of them,
10:14and if CJ can develop into that,
10:16that's the way to stay
10:18consistently competitive every
10:20year. So the Texans nailed down
10:22and get a deal nailed down with
10:24one of what I clearly they view
10:26as one of their tentpole
10:28cornerstone players here for
10:30this franchise.
