Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is really making his mark at training camp practices. Clint Stoerner and Ron Hughley discuss it here on The Drive.

00:00Hey man, uh, reports are, and we heard it from, from, uh, John Harris.
00:04If you missed that earlier, he was on with the set two 40.
00:06He gave it a full breakdown, um, multiple picks from Derek
00:11Stingley jr.
00:12Off of CJ Stroud, one where he went over and apparently went up with
00:17Nico Collins and was able to get a pick and got himself in good position.
00:21According to John Harris.
00:22And then another one, a pick six off CJ Stroud.
00:27And, uh, it looks like he's looking like what you said the day he
00:31was drafted, what he needs to be.
00:33It looks like now you're a Texan man.
00:35Yeah.
00:35It looks like Derek Stingley is that he said he got, he said, John,
00:38I think there's going to be in the team picture of the top three in the league.
00:41Wow.
00:42Yeah.
00:43I mean, look, there's, I mean, Johnny Harris is obviously high on the fell on
00:46the young fellow, which I don't know anybody that isn't really high on him,
00:49but best hands on the team.
00:50Top three corner of the league.
00:51That's, that's a bold statement given what we've seen.
00:54Um, now I, I don't think it's a stretch.
00:56I don't think he's crazy for having those opinions at all.
00:58I mean, Derek Stingley is, is clearly a guy with an extremely high ceiling.
01:02He has played very little football, relatively speaking.
01:05And, and he is, I mean, just, I mean, you want to talk about a trajectory
01:09of, of, of becoming one of the best he's on it.
01:12There, there's no doubt there, but you, uh, it's interesting to me,
01:16Ron, with you look at kind of how this training camp has gone, which we
01:21discussed a little bit earlier with, with Johnny, it was early on the first,
01:25let's say the first week, maybe 10 days of camp, uh, not 10 days, first week of
01:29camp, um, this offense was making a, a statement and, and making it a point to
01:35be more aggressive and take some shots downfield and it just seemed like, I
01:41don't think it was by design, but it, but, uh, it just seemed like they had
01:44no problem if a go route was, was called.
01:47And Derek Stingley happened to be on that wide receiver and there was no
01:49deep help and they were going to take that shot on Derek Stingley.
01:53And, and, and they, they took advantage of him a full, a couple of times,
01:56got behind him, convincingly got behind him a couple of times.
02:00And then comes the day when the scuffle happened, right?
02:04It clearly, he was having a really, really good day that day before the
02:09scuffle, but then the scuffle happens.
02:11He clearly doesn't have a problem letting Dalton Schultz and everybody
02:14else know that whatever went down angle happened on his watch.
02:18Uh, he continues to have a great day that day.
02:22And he has continued to show out ever since.
02:26And, and, and it's all culminated today in practice where you got bad weather,
02:31but there's, there's, there's three, there's three facets here.
02:37If you will.
02:38One, he undercuts tank Dale on a speed cut out route.
02:42One of the best route runners.
02:44I I'm, I'm, I am very confident in saying one of the best
02:47route runners in the league.
02:48Um, he undercuts tank Dale on an out route to the point where
02:55he doesn't just get a PBU.
02:57He picks it and, and would have taken it to the house.
03:00Had it been live football, if you're running routes for tank Dale, um,
03:04then, then you, you, you're covering that next level.
03:07Then he goes up and, and on a 50, 50 ball, it's thrown up to Nico Collins.
03:12Derek Stingly goes up and he's, he's the, the winner of the 50, 50 ball
03:17and gets a pick there, which was in the red zone, which would've been a huge
03:20turnover, and then we get to the point that the quarterback that's throwing
03:24these interceptions to Derek Stingly statistically was the best quarterback
03:30in the game last year, throwing for the most yards per game in the fewest
03:33interceptions, the best in the game as it pertains to major
03:36production and few interceptions.
03:38Um, that is a big time, big time statement.
03:41And one of the interceptions, I believe it was the pick six where he undercut
03:45tank Dale, uh, word on the street is he threw the ball back
03:48towards the offensive sideline.
03:50Um, and, and look, this, this is to me that this is the Derek
03:54Stingly that, that I'm looking for.
03:57This is the Derek Stingly that I've been waiting for.
04:00Um, I was not as, uh, impressed, I guess, which, I mean, I remember a couple
04:08of years ago, everybody getting super impressed with a ball that was thrown
04:11directly to him in the end zone by Trevor Lawrence.
04:13I'm thinking that was just hell.
04:14I think I may have been able to catch that ball.
04:16Right.
04:16I mean, I, I think we wanted him to be good immediately and he was injured
04:21and then he got in there and you wanted even more that we just kind of, kind
04:24of blew whatever he did good, bad, or indifferent out of proportion, right?
04:29Last year, the Amari Cooper follow the Amari Cooper shadow and eliminating
04:34him from the box score, um, was, was the arrival of Derek Stingly Jr.
04:40But there's never been a moment, right?
04:43Where you go into a game and you think the Texans got the best corner in the
04:48league, one of high ceiling, big time expectations.
04:53No, quite.
04:53I've, I've had those.
04:54I've had those love him.
04:55Wouldn't trade him, have confidence in him, but best corner in the league.
05:00We're going to go into games this year, Ron, and whether it's true or not, I
05:04don't think it's crazy when people say, you know what the Texans may have
05:08the best corner in the damn league.
05:10I don't think that that is an out of pocket.
05:14Oh my God.
05:15What the hell?
05:15And he's got a lot of work to do only wrong, but this is the first time where
05:19I've felt like, okay, let's, let's have a conversation about Derek Stingly and,
05:25and all the tangibles and, and the high ceiling, as long as he can stay healthy,
05:30can he be a top corner in this league?
05:32And I think it's a real conversation based off what we're seeing in training
05:36and based off what we saw at the end of last season, uh, that, that, that is
05:40absolutely a fair, fair thought, which leads me to, or they better be right.
05:47They better be right on that other side.
05:49Clint, you talking about Lassiter?
05:52Yep.
05:53And I, and when I say they, I, I think this is more D'Amico.
05:59You better, you better be right.
06:00Because I'll say this, I think Nick and I think D'Amico is heavily involved,
06:04especially on, uh, on the defensive side of the ball on the personnel.
06:08But if I look at it, Nick has provided, Hey man, you brought in a second round
06:12pick, a pick 42 at corner, you brought in Okuda, you brought in CJ, CJ Henderson.
06:17You've added three legitimate pieces that are talented guys that could
06:23work on the other side of them.
06:25And it, and it seems like Lassiter is who they are rolling with.
06:28And they, they need to be right because we're going to start saying,
06:32man, I'm not the one over there.
06:34The hell am I going to throw over there for, right?
06:36Like I, if you're, if you're the Texans, I got like, you better be right
06:40about Petrie too, in this nickel thing.
06:42I got this, like this guy right here.
06:44I'm not, I'm not, I'm not throwing over there.
06:46Well, that's, that's the, that may be, look, let's be honest.
06:49This, this Derrick Stingley thing may be, um, where the, the confidence in
06:56putting Kamari Lassiter out there from jump, that may be where it's stemming
06:59from because you, you know, you, you know, with, with Derrick Stingley on the
07:04field, you can always have your free safety shadow or shade just to Lassiter
07:09side, you can always give him help over the top.
07:12Um, you can always have Derrick Stingley jr.
07:17Shadow, the best receiver to assure that some of these high powered
07:21offenses don't get Lassiter locked up on a, on a number one receiver.
07:25Like when it's all said and done, if, if Derrick Stingley is healthy and playing
07:31as good a ball as he's been playing in camp, if he does, if that translates
07:34to the damn game day, then D'Amico rides is going to be significantly more
07:39confident in every decision, whether it be personnel or play calling, he's
07:43going to be significantly more confident in everything he does held a Derek Stingley.
07:48I don't want to give him too much damn credit.
07:49Cause it's only, it's only about a week of camp here.
07:51Um, but, but hell he, he may be the root of all this confidence and how
07:55confident that guys are in the interior defensive line, the ability to stop to
07:59run the, the, the, the, the, the willingness or interest in putting Jalen Petrie at
08:04nickel and a second round pick, just handing him the starting corner job from
08:08jump, it may be because Derrick Stingley is a guy that can, can be an eraser.
08:13It's going to be, it's going to be crucial because they name going
08:16to give him a pencil to erase.
08:17They just go, they just go check.
08:19They're going to check.
08:19They're going to challenge everybody else is what they go.
08:23They're going to try to do is challenge five and 14.
08:26And, uh, and they, they better be right in their belief that those guys can hold
08:31up in coverage, um, uh, during the season.
08:34So, Hey, Derek Stingley.
08:36Yeah.
08:36He may shut off a half of the field or so to speak potentially, but you know, teams
08:41are going to get aggressive going the other way.
08:43Absolutely.
