00:00From the Pat and Teller Theater at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, here's our host, Brooke
00:28Welcome to Fool Us, where Penn and Teller have been facing the best magicians from around
00:46the world for more than a decade.
00:48You think they might need a break?
00:51Well you're wrong, because they are ready to take on all comers right now.
00:55And here they are, the unstoppable Penn and Teller.
01:02Every magician tonight is trying to fool Penn and Teller and win the coveted Fool Us trophy.
01:24It's no easy task.
01:26Let's see if our first magician is up to it.
01:29Take a look.
01:32My fiancée Bonnie helps me with my magic, but she's there for me.
01:35We're getting married in less than two months, and as my life gets bigger, my career needs
01:43to match.
01:44So this time around, I'm really trying to fool them harder than I ever have.
01:49That has manifested in me taking a trick that I think is good, and trying to make
01:55it impossible.
01:59Like most future newlyweds, I'm saving for a rainy day, and I have a secret weapon.
02:04I'm doing magic on cruise ships.
02:07We get to honeymoon all over the world and get paid for it.
02:11So if Penn and Teller are wondering what to give us for the big day, tell them to look
02:15in the registry between Tupperware and table settings under the letter T. I don't mean
02:22towels.
02:23Although, towels would be nice.
02:24T is for truffle.
02:25Here's a truffle.
02:26Please welcome back the inventive mind of Blake Boyd.
02:28Thank you, thank you, thank you.
02:29Hello, everybody.
02:30A lot of you have probably seen the trick.
02:31I'm going to show you.
02:32I'm going to show you.
02:33I'm going to show you.
02:34I'm going to show you.
02:35I'm going to show you.
02:36I'm going to show you.
02:37I'm going to show you.
02:38I'm going to show you.
02:39I'm going to show you.
02:40I'm going to show you.
02:41I'm going to show you.
02:42I'm going to show you.
02:43I'm going to show you.
02:44A lot of you have probably seen the trick before where a magician makes a dove appear,
02:48right?
02:49But I think I'm the only magician in the world that can produce any bird that Brooke is about
02:54to name.
02:55Sounds great.
02:56Okay, Brooke.
02:57Yeah.
02:58I don't want you to name dove.
02:59That would be boring.
03:00Okay.
03:01So I want you to name any bird in the entire world and I will make it appear.
03:04Keep in mind, the weirder the bird, the more impressive this will be.
03:08Penguin.
03:09Penguin.
03:10Ladies and gentlemen, for Brooke, I give you a genuine penguin egg.
03:24That's fair.
03:25This is for you.
03:27This is a real penguin egg.
03:28Be careful.
03:29Okay.
03:30I'll be very careful.
03:31Hold on to it.
03:32That's a gift.
03:33Yes.
03:35I want you to take care of that penguin egg for me, Brooke, because we might need that
03:38a little bit later.
03:39Okay.
03:40Okay.
03:41Sound good?
03:42Yes.
03:43Okay.
03:44For my next trick, I need to borrow a $100 bill.
03:45Okay.
03:46Let's see you, sir.
03:47Do you really have one?
03:48Yep.
03:49Awesome.
03:50Would you mind joining me on stage?
03:51Give him a big round of applause.
03:52My name is Blake.
03:53What's your name?
03:54I'm Chris.
03:55Chris.
03:56Nice to meet you, sir.
03:57Nice to meet you.
03:58Can you see the 100?
03:59Do you have it on you?
04:00Let's see.
04:01Let's make sure we still got one.
04:02Perfect.
04:03Chris, would you please take this marker for me?
04:04Okay.
04:05And on the back of the 100, you can just use your hand.
04:06I want you to write Chris in big, bold letters.
04:07Okay.
04:08I'm not going to tell you the money whatsoever.
04:09It's just so we don't have to memorize the serial number or anything like that.
04:12Okay.
04:13Okay.
04:14You can cap the 10 for me, Chris.
04:15We are going to use your bill.
04:17I'll take this.
04:18Can you show that to the camera, Chris?
04:20Show it to everybody.
04:21We got Chris' $100 bill.
04:22Now, we're going to use that bill and also these three envelopes and, Chris, my two fake
04:28$1 bills.
04:29Okay.
04:30Okay.
04:31The reason why we're going to use my fake ones is they are the same size, weight, and
04:33shape as your 100.
04:34Makes sense.
04:35Okay.
04:36Would you please take your 100 for me, sir, and fold it in half?
04:37Okay.
04:38Great.
04:39Perfect.
04:40I'll have you fold it in half one more time.
04:41Okay.
04:42Nice and neat.
04:43Great job, Chris.
04:44And then fold it one more time for me so it's like a little square.
04:45Perfect.
04:46While you're doing that, I will put mine away, and I'm going to seal this envelope just like
04:51that, magician-proofing it.
04:52Now, Chris, I'm going to take this next one.
04:54I'm going to do the same thing, and I want you to keep me honest.
04:57Okay.
04:58Keep the eyes of the audience up close, just folding up a fake $1 bill and putting it in
05:02an envelope.
05:03Cool?
05:04Cool.
05:05All right.
05:06Now, I have one envelope left and one bill left.
05:08All right.
05:09Chris, would you please take this envelope from me, sir?
05:10Yep.
05:11Place your bill down in there.
05:12Make sure it's nice and safe.
05:13Yep.
05:14And would you please carefully remove that little tab and do the move?
05:17Perfect.
05:18And then seal it.
05:19Great job, Chris.
05:20All right.
05:21So now, what we have created are three identical objects that feel the same, look the same,
05:26but one of them is worth $100, and the other two are worth nothing.
05:30Chris, would you please take these, place them behind your back, sir, and give them
05:33a mix.
05:34All right.
05:35I'm not tracking it.
05:36I don't know which one's which.
05:37So here's the idea.
05:38I thought if I could locate Chris' $100 bill, that would be pretty good.
05:41Right?
05:42Okay.
05:43We're going to have you use your gut instinct, your sixth sense.
05:45Okay.
05:46So I have heard that if you get rid of one of your five senses, your other senses get
05:49stronger.
05:50Have you heard this?
05:51I have heard it.
05:52So Chris, are you cool if we blindfold you for this?
05:54Yeah.
05:55Let's do it.
05:56Nice.
05:57All right.
05:58Face forward, please, sir.
05:59Okay.
06:00And would you mind removing your glasses?
06:01Sure.
06:02Okay.
06:03Can you put them in your pocket, or do you want me to put them over here?
06:04No.
06:05Okay.
06:06Good?
06:07Good.
06:08Face forward.
06:09Close your eyes for me.
06:10Okay.
06:11Okay.
06:12And I'm going to add a little layer of protection so you're not tempted to peek.
06:13Okay.
06:14There you go, Chris.
06:15Nice and comfy?
06:16Nice and comfy.
06:17Okay.
06:18Chris, would you please bring the envelopes in front of you?
06:19And keep mixing them.
06:20Just keep mixing them.
06:21Because now what we're going to do is this is going to get interesting.
06:23Chris, we're going to use the process of elimination to get rid of two of those envelopes.
06:28Okay, Chris?
06:29Okay.
06:30Sounds good.
06:31So keep mixing them.
06:32And again, don't overthink this.
06:33Okay.
06:34And Chris, hand me a random envelope.
06:35Random one.
06:36Are you good, Chris?
06:37I'm good.
06:38Would you like to change your mind?
06:39You can if you would like.
06:40It's free choice.
06:41No.
06:42Okay.
06:43What I want you to do, Chris, is hand me one more envelope.
06:44Would you like to change your mind?
06:46No.
06:47Okay, Chris.
06:48This first decision was yours.
06:49All right.
06:50Chris?
06:51Yeah?
06:52That was the sound of magic.
06:53All right.
06:54Hold out your hand, Chris.
06:55We're going to play one more time.
06:57I'm going to hand you both the envelopes.
06:58Mix them up.
06:59Keep mixing, mixing, mixing.
07:00Constantly mixing.
07:01But this time, Chris, we're going to do it differently.
07:02I want you to stop mixing with one envelope in each hand and face me.
07:03Okay, Chris.
07:04No more mixing.
07:05I'm going to ask you one more question.
07:06Okay.
07:07Right or left?
07:08Right.
07:09Wait.
07:10Your right or my right?
07:11Your right.
07:12All right.
07:13All right.
07:14All right.
07:15All right.
07:16All right.
07:17All right.
07:18All right.
07:19All right.
07:20All right.
07:21All right.
07:22All right.
07:23All right.
07:24All right.
07:25All right.
07:26All right.
07:27All right.
07:28All right.
07:29Too late now.
07:30Okay.
07:31All right.
07:32Chris.
07:33Yes.
07:34I'll take this from you.
07:35You can go ahead and take off your blindfold.
07:36Okay.
07:37You can see.
07:38Look.
07:39Magic.
07:40Hilarious.
07:41Yep.
07:42Magic.
07:43Okay.
07:44And you can put your glasses back on if you want.
07:45Okay.
07:46This is what's amazing.
07:47Because even though Chris did all the shuffling, Chris did the mixing the entire time, impossibly,
07:48Chris, you have located...
07:49Hold out your left hand for me, sir.
07:52...equally as impressive as locating your $100 bill.
07:55Chris, you have located one of the fake $1 bills, everybody.
08:04Okay.
08:05Chris.
08:06Yes.
08:07This didn't work.
08:08All right.
08:09Hold out your left hand.
08:10And I'll take this from you.
08:11You don't need that.
08:12All right.
08:13Now, but here's the deal.
08:14Everybody can keep this in mind.
08:15Technically, Chris made all of those decisions.
08:18So, technically, Chris, it's your fault that we accidentally shredded the $50 bill, right?
08:22$100 bill.
08:23Oh, details, details.
08:24Okay.
08:25Chris, that is a fake $1 bill.
08:27Okay?
08:28But before I came out, I wrote something on the back of that fake $1 bill.
08:32Okay.
08:33Would you please unfold it for me, sir?
08:36And read what is said on the back.
08:39Penguin.
08:40Penguin.
08:48Chris, would you please go exchange that penguin bill for that penguin egg?
08:53I sure can.
08:54Thank you, Brooks.
08:55Thank you for taking care of the penguin egg for us.
08:57There you go.
08:58Very carefully place that penguin egg in the pan.
09:01And with both hands, hold on to that handle.
09:03So cameras can see.
09:04This is very important.
09:05Everybody watch very, very closely.
09:07Okay, Chris.
09:08And whatever you do, don't let anything fall.
09:10Okay.
09:11Okay, here we go.
09:12I'm just going to crack it.
09:14Now, Chris.
09:15Gross.
09:16Be honest.
09:17Okay.
09:18Yes or no.
09:19Do you see something in that egg that does not belong in an egg?
09:22I do.
09:23How crazy would it be if that was your signed $1 bill?
09:26It would be crazy, crazier if it was my $100 bill.
09:29Okay, all right, all right.
09:30Chris, Chris.
09:31Now, this is super gross.
09:32But luckily, it is not a one.
09:34It is a hundred.
09:35And even crazier, Chris, does that say Chris on the back?
09:38It sure does.
09:39It says Chris on the back, everybody!
09:41Thank you so much for your help.
09:43Give it up for Chris, everybody.
09:44Blake White.
09:45Thank you guys so much.
09:46Blake.
09:47Yes.
09:48Amazing.
09:49And I have a gift for you, Brooke.
09:50You do?
09:51Here's a penguin omelet.
09:52I love it.
09:53Sorry.
09:54What's your process in taking a trick and then making it your own?
09:57I've been working on this trick since probably college.
10:00And over the past few months, I've worked on it.
10:03And I've been working on it.
10:04And I've been working on it.
10:05And I've been working on it.
10:06And I've been working on it.
10:07And I've been working on it.
10:08And I've been working on it.
10:09And I've been working on it.
10:10And over the past few months, I've worked with my close friends
10:12to try to make it that much more fooling for those guys.
10:15If you weren't a magician, what would you be?
10:17Oh, my gosh.
10:18I sang in college.
10:20I love singing, too.
10:21So, I guess if magic just didn't exist,
10:24I would figure out a way of being in front of people to try to entertain them.
10:28Do you ever bring music into your act?
10:30I haven't.
10:31I'm not.
10:32I'm a decent singer.
10:33I'm a great singer as magicians go.
10:36Okay.
10:38As far as singers go, not that.
10:40Okay, Blake.
10:41They've incubated long enough.
10:43Let's see if you have hatched yourself a Foulette's trophy.
10:47Are you ready?
10:48Yes.
10:49Penn & Teller.
10:50Hey, Blake.
10:51Hello.
10:52Good to see you again.
10:53Thank you so much.
10:54Really wonderful all the way through.
10:55Kind of a turn on a classic plot in magic,
10:58but done better than anyone else.
11:01Just beautiful all the way.
11:02But, you know, I'm distracted, Blake, because Brooke brought up penguins.
11:07And as you know, you've known me for a long time,
11:09you know I'm an amateur ornithologist.
11:12I know you know that about me.
11:13And penguins is something that I am obsessed with.
11:17Oh, I didn't know that about you.
11:18Obsessed with penguins.
11:19Because they make a magical choice early in their life,
11:23and they mate for life.
11:25They imprint on one another.
11:27And although they are not marsupials, they are birds,
11:30they have a double pouch,
11:32which is a really important part of the egg-laying of the penguin.
11:36So I want to get back to your magic.
11:38I really do.
11:39But penguins got me going.
11:42And I'm not just talking about emperor penguins,
11:44I'm talking about even the smaller penguins.
11:47Although you can imagine a guy like me likes the bigger penguins.
11:51But I've got to tell you, Blake, as great as you were, Blake,
11:55you've been on this show four times.
11:58Four times, Blake.
12:00And we cannot wait for you to come on your fifth time,
12:04which is when you will fool us, because it was not now.
12:08That is correct.
12:10Does all this penguin talk mean something to you in code?
12:13Penguins, Blake.
12:17That's the most penguin code I've ever heard, but it was all correct.
12:22You were wonderful.
12:23I enjoyed that so much.
12:24Thank you so much.
12:25Thank you guys so much.
12:26Thank you, thank you, thank you.
12:27Blake White, everyone.
12:28Thank you, everybody.
12:34Penn and Teller's checklist includes taking on more magicians
12:37and performing a trick of their own.
12:39More amazing magic after the break.
12:42Welcome back to Fool Us,
12:44where we find great magicians from all over the world, like this one.
12:48Hello, my name is Hernan Macaño.
12:51I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
12:54I learn all the time.
12:56I'm a student of music and chess.
12:59I'm a magician.
13:01I'm a magician.
13:03I'm a magician.
13:05I'm a magician.
13:07I'm a magician.
13:09I'm a student of music and chess and magic.
13:13I started magic late, when I was 29 years old.
13:16For me, it was the perfect time to start.
13:19I have a school of magic.
13:21I have my own theater in my house.
13:23All the time, I do magic.
13:25Magic, like art, is a self-portrait for the artist.
13:29Every time you see a performer on stage, if you look deep enough,
13:33it's possible to see the real person.
13:36Magic is very simple, but for me, it's very important.
13:39I will show pen and tailor.
13:41In magic, everything is possible.
13:48Let's bring on the Argentine artistry of Hernan Macaño.
13:52Hello.
13:54Hola.
13:56Hello, hello.
13:59This trick is very, very simple, very simple.
14:02You need to check the table, check the map, check all, okay?
14:08And check the little box.
14:12It's good or not?
14:14Really, it's not the box, it's only the hole.
14:17It's really a hole, nothing more, okay?
14:20It's normal.
14:21And check, please, the coins.
14:23It's regular coins.
14:25It's good or not?
14:26Check, please, check.
14:27Good.
14:28Nothing inside the coin?
14:30No, no, no.
14:31It's good?
14:32Okay.
14:33The idea of the trick is very, very simple, very simple.
14:36All the time, one, two, three, and four coins into the box.
14:44Every time.
14:45And this box, all the time in this position.
14:49Check, check.
14:50It's good?
14:51It's good.
14:52Check here, at this.
14:53All the time in this position.
14:55What do I do?
14:56I do this, and the coins into, yes, into my arms, go hand to hand.
15:05Here.
15:07Side to side.
15:08It's good or not?
15:11This is the idea, only the idea.
15:13Do you like the idea?
15:14Yes, yes.
15:15Very much.
15:16So I do.
15:17Okay.
15:19But in slow motion.
15:20One for one.
15:21One, two, three, and four.
15:24The first.
15:25Come, come.
15:29The first coin here, and here.
15:32Only three.
15:34It's okay?
15:35Only three.
15:37One, two, and three.
15:41Go.
15:43Here.
15:44Do you see?
15:45Here.
15:46Watch.
15:47Here.
15:48Two here, and here.
15:51Only two.
15:53Check all, please.
15:54Check all.
15:55It's good?
15:56Yes.
15:57It's normal coins.
15:58Okay.
15:59One, two, three.
16:02Only one.
16:03Okay?
16:04Very fast.
16:06And the last.
16:08The last.
16:09I go.
16:12I wish.
16:13No Bluetooth, nothing.
16:18It's here, okay?
16:19I touch.
16:20I touch.
16:21Now it's here, because here is nothing.
16:23Nothing, nothing, nothing.
16:27One, two, three, and coins to my hand.
16:41One moment.
16:42I need more time, because I don't need more coins.
16:51It's good.
16:54Hernan Betano, everyone.
16:56Hernan Betano.
17:00I love seeing them so puzzled.
17:06That was incredible.
17:08Tell me a little bit about what you do in your life outside of magic.
17:13I play guitar, I play jazz, I composer, I study architecture.
17:21You are a man of many talents.
17:23I don't know.
17:26Hernan, what would it mean for you to fool Penn and Teller?
17:30Brooke, excuse me.
17:32He doesn't have to answer that hypothetically.
17:34It's Hernan, right?
17:35Hernan?
17:36What?
17:37His name is Hernan?
17:38Hernan, yes.
17:39Hernan.
17:40I want to get the name exactly right when we bring the trophy down.
17:43So there's no reason for him to answer.
17:47Why make that a hypothetical?
17:51Why make that a hypothetical?
17:56Oh, thank you.
17:59Congratulations, Hernan.
18:00They never do it just like that.
18:02That was amazing.
18:04Oh, wow.
18:07Congratulations.
18:09Hernan Macano, everyone.
18:11Thank you, princess.
18:18Oh, man.
18:19Okay.
18:20Come on, boys.
18:22Hernan Macano just got a shiny new trophy, and when we return,
18:26more magicians will try to do the same.
18:28Stay close, everyone.
18:30Welcome back.
18:44We just saw a pool-less trophy walk out the door,
18:47carried off by a great magician, of course.
18:49Let's see if this next act can win one, too.
18:54When you Google magician, only pictures of men come up,
18:57and I want to change that.
18:59I'm Ellen Nicholson.
19:00I'm 16 years old and from a tiny village in Ireland.
19:04I'm determined to pursue my passion, so I joined a local magic society,
19:08but it was a room full of men, and they didn't take me seriously.
19:12So I started performing tricks they'd never seen before,
19:15and they were impressed.
19:17Now, in my small town, I'm the first ever magician hired by local restaurants.
19:23I was in school when I got the acceptance e-mail for Fool Us,
19:27and we were not allowed on our phones, but I snuck a peek.
19:31My teacher came over, and I made my phone disappear right in front of her eyes,
19:35and tonight, here I am on the biggest magic stage in the world with a brand new trick.
19:41I hope to inspire other women and girls and show them that magic isn't just for men.
19:54Please welcome 16-year-old Ella Nicholson.
20:00Hey, everyone.
20:01What's the story, Rory? What's the crack?
20:03I'm Ella, and I've come all the way from Ireland to try and cod Penn & Teller tonight.
20:08Won't that be gas?
20:10Go on, I'll give it a lash then.
20:14Penn, did you understand everything I just said?
20:17Not a word.
20:20Well, I guess that means I fooled you. Bring down the trophy.
20:27If it were that easy, everyone in Ireland could have a shot at fooling you.
20:31Now, the question I get asked the most being from Ireland is,
20:37do I like potatoes?
20:39I tell you, if I had one potato for every time someone asked me that question,
20:44just today, I'd have this many.
20:52It's a heap of potatoes.
20:55There's a lot.
20:56Now, they're all a present for you guys.
20:59Now, you're probably wondering, what is she doing with a wheelbarrow on the stage,
21:03and how does it tie in with magic?
21:05It ties in perfectly with the Irish slang I was using a second ago.
21:10You see, back home in Ireland,
21:12me and my friends would write down Irish slang words in our notebook at home.
21:16I brought mine here with me today.
21:19And while all the others were acting the maggot,
21:22that means acting silly in Irish slang,
21:24I would try and predict what word my friend would write down for the next day.
21:29I was almost always right.
21:31I realized I had the weirdest ability to be able to predict it.
21:35You know what? Let me show you.
21:37Brooke, can you kindly join me over here, please?
21:39I'd love to.
21:40Hi.
21:41How are you?
21:42Good, how are you?
21:43Great, thank you.
21:44Now, I know the show is called Penn and Teller Fool Us,
21:47but tonight I want you to be the star,
21:49so I made you this.
21:56No problem.
21:57Brooke, you have the most important job of the night.
22:00You're going to choose any number between 1 and 40,
22:03and that's going to represent a word in my notebook.
22:05So could you please name any number?
22:0922.
22:1022, are you sure?
22:12I'm sure.
22:13Perfect.
22:14So as you can see, I have lots of different Irish slang words in here.
22:1720 is manky, 21 is kip, 22 is banjaxed.
22:23Banjaxed.
22:24Yeah.
22:25Now, Brooke, do you know what banjaxed means?
22:27I have no idea.
22:29Banjaxed actually means broken.
22:31It's a very powerful word.
22:32Did you know that?
22:33I did not know that.
22:35Banjaxed.
22:39See, it's a very powerful word.
22:42And again, you could have chose any number and any word.
22:45So all you have to do is say banjaxed with feeling.
22:48Okay.
22:49Are you ready?
22:50Banjaxed.
22:53Brooke became broke.
22:55Get it?
22:56It broke.
23:02Banjaxed is a very powerful word.
23:04And you know what, Brooke?
23:05I think I did a pretty good job of predicting the word of the day today.
23:09Banjaxed.
23:18Thank you so much, everyone.
23:20Helen Nicholson, everyone.
23:23All right.
23:24We're going to switch spots, Helen.
23:25Okay.
23:26Without stepping on potatoes.
23:28Wow.
23:29So what does it feel like to be here with us?
23:32This is probably more people than in my village, so I'm just like, wow.
23:37Do 16-year-olds have bucket lists?
23:40I do.
23:41Can you share with us what's on yours?
23:43Believe it or not, I actually have it backstage.
23:45As soon as I get off the stage, I'm going to tick it off my bucket list.
23:49Oh.
23:50Yeah.
23:51So this was on your bucket list.
23:52Yes.
23:53I love that.
23:54What else is on your bucket list?
23:56I'd like to see the Grand Canyon.
23:58We're going to go see that later on in the week, so I'm so excited.
24:01Amazing.
24:02Yeah.
24:03And I'm afraid of heights, but even going skydiving, I'd love to do it.
24:07You're going to need a whole new bucket list pretty soon.
24:09Yeah.
24:10Would you teach us some more Irish slang?
24:12Okay.
24:13Earlier on, I said, what's the crack?
24:15Yeah.
24:16That means, how are you?
24:18If I'd say, I'm knackered, that means I'm really tired.
24:21Well, sometimes Penn's code words are a bit slang.
24:24So let's see if you can understand what he's got to say.
24:26Let's see.
24:27All right.
24:28I'm ready.
24:29Teller, are you ready?
24:30Yes.
24:31Ella.
24:32Absolutely, absolutely wonderful, Ella.
24:34Just beautiful.
24:35Wildly innovative.
24:36You've taken the idea of a magic word and made it just terrific.
24:43You know, a magic word that the audience doesn't understand.
24:46Yeah.
24:47And really done that beautifully.
24:48I won't try to say any Irish phrases.
24:51I don't know any.
24:52But my people are from Newfoundland.
24:54Yeah.
24:55And I go up there fairly often.
24:56And we have an expression for a wonderful kind of trick like this, which is Svenpad.
25:02I don't know if you've ever heard that.
25:04But it's a Newfoundland expression about how wonderful, wonderful your act was.
25:09Completely innovative.
25:11A kind of idea on that system that we hadn't seen, that exact thing.
25:17All of it fit together really well.
25:19You're really charming, delightful, tremendous.
25:23Now, I said a few things in there that I bet you caught on to.
25:27And here's the moment where it goes from you being praised to us being hated.
25:35I want you to hear the audience do this because we'll just magically do this like you used the word banjacks.
25:43I'm going to use a small phrase in English that means the audience continues to love you but goes to hating us.
25:53Yeah.
25:54Watch this.
25:55We don't think you fooled us.
26:00Ella, did you cod Penn and Teller?
26:02I don't think I codded them today.
26:03But I had a really great time, so.
26:06We love you.
26:07Adorable.
26:08That was amazing.
26:09Good luck to you.
26:10Thank you for coming to be with us.
26:12Thank you, Ella.
26:17We're going to show you a few commercials and then show you another world-class act when we come back.
26:35When we're back, let's pick up where we left off and bring out our next magician.
26:41As a child, when I saw Sigrid and Roy on television, I set out to train all the predators in my neighborhood.
26:48The dogs, the rabbits, and the cats didn't want to be trained, I think.
26:52The success was so limited that I ended up doing card tricks instead.
26:56I love close-up magic because it's so intimate.
26:59I do wonders right in front of their eyes.
27:01But I often don't have complete control over the performance conditions.
27:05This keeps me on my toes.
27:07It's not unlike my other passion, windsurfing.
27:10Balancing on the edge is what excites me about both of these pastimes.
27:14During COVID, when I had no shows to do, I started to write a book.
27:18It's about 10 card tricks I really love to perform, and I improved them.
27:23Tonight, I will perform my favorite one of them.
27:25Penn Teller.
27:26If you haven't read my book yet, it's too late now.
27:34Put your hands together for German magician Friedrich Reutsch.
27:38Hi.
27:40Hi, Penn.
27:42Hello, Brooke.
27:43Hi, Penn.
27:45Brooke, after seeing so many card tricks here on the show, I wonder, how do you feel about performing one yourself?
27:52Me performing it?
27:54In front of Penn?
27:56I'll try.
27:57It's easy.
27:58You see, I have the instructions for the trick here with me.
28:01It says, instructions for a miracle.
28:03So, it's not just a plain card trick.
28:05It's a real miracle.
28:06Oh, that's very cool.
28:07Yes.
28:08Great.
28:09Here we go.
28:10Step one.
28:11Have a card chosen, signed, and replaced into the deck.
28:13Okay.
28:14So far, easy.
28:15Standard card trick procedure.
28:17You get a pen from me.
28:19I have the cards, of course.
28:22Standard poker deck like you would see in a Vegas casino.
28:27And, Brooke, I'd like you to select a card by just pointing to one of those cards.
28:32Which one would you like?
28:34This one here?
28:35Yes.
28:36Okay.
28:37Three of spades.
28:38Good choice.
28:39I would like you to sign the card.
28:40Okay.
28:41But let's do it not on the front, but on the back.
28:43I hold it like this.
28:44Ready?
28:46Perfect.
28:48Very good.
28:49It has to dry.
28:50I think that should be fine.
28:51And, Penn, I would like you to actually cut the pack into two more or less equal portions.
28:56I'll do my best.
28:57I'm German, but it doesn't have to be that precise.
29:00That's perfect.
29:01And put the other half on top.
29:03Okay.
29:04That was pretty precise.
29:05And stir everything up.
29:06That's important.
29:07Good job, Penn.
29:08Okay.
29:09So we can come to step number two.
29:10Maybe you can read the steps so we two can...
29:12Wave your hands dramatically over the deck and say a magic word.
29:17Like abracadabra?
29:18Like something like that?
29:19Pretty good.
29:20Does that work, Penn?
29:21I would say perfect.
29:22Let's check.
29:24Next step.
29:25That was totally unnecessary, but you looked great.
29:30This is important.
29:31Sorry about that, but you did look great.
29:33So, next step.
29:36Now show the card has vanished from the deck.
29:40Maybe I help you with that.
29:42Please.
29:43You put in the deck the card reverse, right?
29:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:45So we can just check if any card is facing the opposite way.
29:48That looks good.
29:49Now it might be that the card just turned over and is somewhere hidden between the other cards,
29:53so let's check for the three of spades it was, right?
29:56Three of spades.
29:57Here's three of clubs, but no three of spades, no three of spades.
30:01Actually, it has vanished.
30:03Pretty cool.
30:04Let's go to the next step.
30:07Pick up the card box and shake it to build up the suspense.
30:13That's me?
30:14Okay.
30:15Ooh, there's something inside.
30:17There's something inside.
30:18Very good.
30:19Step number six.
30:21Open the box, take out the folded card, and check the signature.
30:26Now?
30:27Do it.
30:28Okay.
30:29Isn't that cool?
30:30Very cool.
30:31Fold it into quarters even.
30:32I mean, wait.
30:33Ready?
30:34That's not a…
30:35May I see that?
30:36That's not a playing card, Brooke.
30:38Uh-oh.
30:39It says here, step seven, congratulations.
30:42You have just performed a real miracle.
30:45Me?
30:46That is pretty weird because, you know, usually this is the last page in the booklet.
30:50Okay.
30:51So, I wonder if the page is in the box.
30:55What's inside of the booklet?
30:57If you turn over one more page.
30:59Actually, here's a playing card.
31:01A three of spades with holes in it bound into the booklet.
31:07If this card had your signature on the back, I think this would be a miracle, right?
31:10I think so.
31:11Actually, here we have three of spades with your signature.
31:16That's my signature.
31:18Congratulations.
31:20Great job.
31:22I'm keeping this, yes?
31:23Sure.
31:24That was a lot of pressure.
31:25Yeah.
31:26Now you know how we feel.
31:27I do.
31:28I do.
31:29So, when you need a new idea for a trick, where do you go?
31:32There are a lot of books, of course, about magic.
31:34So, I read a lot.
31:35I meet a lot with other magicians.
31:37And do magicians tend to share their ideas or do they hold them close?
31:40Yeah.
31:41No, actually, I find if you show something of your own,
31:44they're very eager to also show tricks they invented.
31:48So, is it hard to be original?
31:50Yes.
31:51I mean, to invent a new card trick is almost impossible.
31:55I invented some things, but often it's like taking existing things just one step further.
32:00So, it's more my trick than the one of someone else.
32:03No, that makes sense.
32:04Friedrich, are you ready to find out if Penn and Teller know how you did your trick?
32:07Yes.
32:08Okay.
32:09Let's go to the boys.
32:10Yes.
32:16Brooke!
32:17Uh-oh.
32:18That was a really, really well-constructed act.
32:21Beautifully, beautifully put together.
32:24And you did a wonderful, wonderful job.
32:28It was a really good idea all the way through.
32:31Very, very bold to split up a double act and force us to work separately.
32:38And you had a very, very bold move.
32:43That you were very gutsily.
32:45Did it right under my nose in plain view, but nobody saw it.
32:51You did that the strongest way possible.
32:54The shaking it in the box was a really strong misdirect on the ending.
32:59And, Brooke, you looked wonderful doing it.
33:02We loved the way you did it.
33:03It was a great routine.
33:05Brooke, as much as we love you, we don't think you fooled us.
33:10So, what do you think, Brooke?
33:12Did you fool us?
33:13I think you slipped in a few words there, but I'm going to consult with my partner here.
33:18Okay.
33:19And see if...
33:20Yeah, I think they described it pretty accurately.
33:25Nicely done.
33:26Thank you so much, Peter.
33:27I hope you had nothing to do with me.
33:28No, no, no.
33:29You were certainly wonderful.
33:31Thanks.
33:32Thanks a lot.
33:33Thank you so much.
33:34Bye, everyone.
33:39We are almost out of time.
33:41Almost.
33:42We've saved the last slot for our Las Vegas legends.
33:44See Penn and Teller perform when Fooless returns.
34:00Welcome back.
34:01So, over the break, Penn and Teller asked the entire audience to write down their most silly, random, and outlandish dreams.
34:08Let's see how Penn interprets those dreams.
34:11Take it away, big man.
34:12Okay.
34:15Now, you all wrote down your dreams.
34:17I got this piece of paper.
34:18We asked you where you wanted to be, what you wanted to be doing, who you wanted to be with.
34:22I went to the audience.
34:23I picked Rob.
34:24You ready, Rob?
34:25Yeah.
34:26It's going to be Rob and me against all of you in the battle of dreams.
34:30You ready to fight with your dreams against us?
34:32Now, we've got a few of the dreams that we picked up from our live show last time.
34:37Right over here, Rob.
34:38And here I got one.
34:40This person wrote, I would like to be in, well, I guess they mean on Venus getting a massage from Taylor Swift.
34:51That's a fine dream.
34:52It's a really good dream.
34:54Yeah, I would like to be with them right there.
34:56It's a good dream, yeah.
35:01Yeah.
35:02All right.
35:03I got another one for you guys.
35:05All right.
35:06I would like to be in the Sahara Desert playing poker with Charlie Chaplin.
35:12Can I throw it at him now?
35:15Okay.
35:16Yeah!
35:17That's good.
35:18That was for you.
35:19You can even do more hate than that, Rob.
35:21Oh, okay.
35:22Even more hate.
35:23Remember, this is a battle.
35:24I'm going to give you a couple of these.
35:25You don't have to read them right now.
35:26Hold them right there.
35:27Hold one in each hand.
35:29You all take your dreams.
35:30Hold them like this, okay?
35:32I'm going to count to three, and then all of us are going to crumple the paper at the same time.
35:36It'll be a great sound.
35:37Here we go.
35:38And one, two, three.
35:42Crush your dreams!
35:47Here's the way the battle's going to go.
35:49I'm going to count to three, and we are going to fight.
35:53You will throw your dreams at us.
35:55We will throw them back at you.
35:58Okay?
35:59You ready for that?
36:00And Rob, Rob, let's be ready.
36:01When they come up at us and they hit us, okay, don't think of that as an attack.
36:05Think of that as ammunition.
36:07We're going to pick them up from the ground and throw them back.
36:09When I say we're going to pick them up from the ground and throw them back, I mean mostly you.
36:13I get a bad back, okay?
36:15Now, you people in the back are saying to yourself, wait a minute, Penn, damn you.
36:20We know a little something about aerodynamics.
36:23We know that we can't throw this crumpled up paper all the way up there and hit Rob, and that's right, you can't.
36:30But there are people sitting in front of you with better seats, seats that you deserve.
36:37Pick them out, hit them right in the back of the head.
36:40And when you get hit in the back of the head, pick them up, throw them up here at us.
36:43Oh, Brooke, you are going to get hit so much.
36:47Pick them up and throw them.
36:49I'm going to count to three, then let the battle begin.
36:52Everybody ready?
36:53Get ready.
36:54And one, two, three, go battle, battle, battle, bitch, go.
36:59You bastard.
37:00You bastard.
37:01Throw them, throw them.
37:02Get them up here.
37:03Get them up here.
37:04Throw them, throw them.
37:05I got you.
37:07Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:09Okay, okay, okay.
37:11Throw them up, throw them up.
37:12Okay, cease fire, cease fire.
37:15Oh, you bastard.
37:16Hey, cease fire.
37:19And now, Rob, now, here.
37:25We got to clean up.
37:26Pick them up.
37:27I would help you.
37:28Pick them up.
37:29Put them in there.
37:30Pick them up.
37:31I would help you, but, you know, bad back.
37:33Yeah, yeah.
37:34Pick them up.
37:36That's enough.
37:37That's enough, Rob.
37:38Put your hand over the top.
37:39You put that in there.
37:40Put your hand over the top.
37:41Shake them up, baby.
37:42Twist and shout.
37:44Shake them up, Rob.
