00:00I'm hugely pleased we got a point because it's another point towards safety and that's
00:23the job at this moment in time in the league. I'm disappointed we didn't take all three
00:29points today. We played here the other night when we drew 2-2 with Liverpool and it felt
00:34like a win. Today's 2-2 felt more like, not a defeat, but close to it. But anyway, I thought
00:42the team played really well today. I thought they'd done so many good things. A free kick
00:47sort of changes the momentum really. I didn't think Manchester United were really, didn't
00:52really offer us too much problem up until the free kick and then you would expect it,
00:58which they do. They're a club with tradition and they have to fight for everything there
01:02and they've done that in the second half.
01:04Having said that, I think the vast majority of the stadium thought you had a light penalty.
01:08What was your view?
01:10Well, I can't understand why the referee on field makes the decision. If it was absolutely
01:17clear and obvious that he should go to the screen, well, I didn't see that. They pulled
01:21his jersey. I just thought the referee made the correct decision at the time.
01:27And he should have stuck with it.
01:30Frustrating?
01:31Frustrating. But, you know, football, we've had some decisions go for us. We scored late
01:35a few weeks ago, things like that. It looked as if we were going to get a light penalty
01:41today. And when we were 2-0 up today, I have to say we should have gone 3-0 up. We had
01:46a couple of big opportunities to get ourselves the third goal, which would have probably
01:51put the game a bit further out of reach.
01:54John?
01:58That first 70 minutes was pretty impressive. How pleased were you with the start that you
02:03side made? And what were your messages in the half-time?
02:06Well, we wanted to keep playing. I thought we'd done a lot of good things. And I thought
02:11we did when we came back out. I thought, you rightly say, I think we had a couple of opportunities
02:15and I thought that it was only the free kick. And actually, I was nearly more annoyed with
02:22the free kick in some ways than the penalty because we had a chance of the free kick in
02:25the first half and the referee didn't stop the play. He let it go on. And I'm not saying
02:31it was a free kick, which we gave away. And because of that, that led to the goal. But
02:37I couldn't understand the first half why the referee didn't give it in the same areas which
02:41we did in this one. But, look, I'm just saying, the players have done brilliantly well in
02:48the last few games. We've got big games to come. We might look back and say it's a two
02:52points drop, but we're taking another one, hopefully, towards staying in the Premier League.
02:57That's the main message, I suppose. I mean, you've got so many injuries at the moment
03:00that when you get to the training games, especially against opposition like this, it's hard to
03:04blame the players sometimes.
03:07Yes, but the players were on. We could have maybe done things at some moments earlier,
03:14but we decided that we thought the team had been doing... The game only changed really
03:18on the free kick. We hadn't been greatly under pressure. We hadn't been conceding many chances.
03:23There wasn't a great need. We were struggling to probably play as well after 60 minutes,
03:29but that was nothing down to the first part. We'd done a very good job.
03:35Hi David. Going back to the penalty, how difficult is it for a referee, once he's been summoned
03:41to the monitor, to stick by the decision? You see it very rarely that they stick by
03:46what they've originally said.
03:47I think we're all, probably everybody who watches football and people who watch it are
03:51probably saying, we're all looking forward to seeing a referee who says, no, no, I'm
03:54sticking with what I've done. Because we would probably say, no, the referee then is nearly
03:59getting told you're absolutely... So every time they go, they're nearly getting told
04:03you're absolutely wrong. We've seen very few say, no, I think I've seen a penalty kick
04:07and if that's the case, if it's absolutely clear and obvious and it's wrong, well, correct.
04:13That's what we've got VAR for and that's what we do. I just didn't think what I've seen
04:18didn't look clear and obvious that it should have been sent to the screen.
04:21Did you speak to the ref?
04:22No, no, no. I'm trying not to get involved. I'm too old now to go and start fighting the
04:26world again.
04:27Is she there?
04:33Hi, David. What's Marcus doing? Is he re-refereeing by VAR or is the referee changing his decision?
04:40Well, I don't know because sometimes if it was... I think if I had been the opposition
04:45manager, I'd have been saying, there's a pool in the jersey, this could be close. And I'm
04:49not saying that it's 100 per cent, but it's close. And I'm saying, I'd be sitting there
04:53saying, oh, he could easily give this. So I think that decision today went against us
04:58in the end, you know. But I don't really know who you would blame, whether it be VAR. I
05:04just didn't think VAR needed to really get involved in it.
05:07Do you think there was more reaction from Ashley than needed?
05:12Well, from where I watched it, I thought that he went down. So I thought right away, oh,
05:17he must have been pulled back and he must have been tripped up. So, and only when I
05:21saw it on the screen when I came back in did I see the pool in the jersey.
05:26Ashley's been a forward player for most of his career. I think that part of your job
05:30is to try and get penalty kicks as well. I think that he gets his jersey pulled and he
05:37done the right thing to try and gain that situation.
05:41Karl?
05:43Sorry?
06:04So somebody fouled Harry Maguire?
06:06No, I think they checked for a foul by Maguire on Young.
06:20I don't know if I'm quite getting you, but so what you're saying is the referee gave
06:24the penalty because of what he thought was a trip by Maguire on Young?
06:29The Premier Match Centre has said the AAR checked the referee's call for a penalty
06:34for a challenge by Maguire on Young.
06:39So did they look at the shirt pool? Did they mention the shirt pool on it?
06:47So they only mentioned the bit they needed to mention. They didn't mention the shirt pool.
06:53Look to me as if the shirt pool might have been enough for it to be given.
06:59Do you think the AAR got it wrong?
07:02I don't know. I'm not an expert on it. They are. I can only tell you what I see them.
07:07A manager, an emotional manager, is going to try and make the decisions. You're asking
07:10me a lot of questions on it. I didn't know what you've just told me. So my feeling is
07:15the pool on the jersey, you shouldn't be getting away with pooling jerseys.
07:20It looked as if he went down after that. Now if Harry Maguire touched him or not, I didn't know.
07:24From the touchline, I thought he'd gone over somebody's leg.
07:29Any further questions, folks?
07:44They done really well. I actually thought the team played really well. We just couldn't
07:49quite keep the intensity up all through. We played really, really well for the best part
07:54of about 65 minutes or so. Ganna's done really well. He's played really well in the games
08:01for me. Not just today, but in all the other games, he's done great.
08:07Is it harder to keep that intensity up when you have so many injuries at the moment?
08:11Are you looking for prevention?
08:15I could sense they were just building up, but the free kick was the turning point. We'd
08:23gone 2-1 up and it just felt like the momentum had changed. United had nothing to lose but
08:30to go for it. Actually, when we were 2-0 up, I thought we should have gone 3-0 up. I really
08:34did. I thought we had a couple of big opportunities. To be fair, we didn't do much wrong. I think
08:39Dukes hit the target with a great volley. So there were a couple of other opportunities
08:44which maybe we could have got the third goal. As I said, I thought the free kick went away.
08:49We would have maybe made the changes, but just after that point. By that time, we were
08:53just beginning to find how we wanted to stick with it. But to be fair to the lads, we could
08:58have battled the header at the end, the penalty kick. So we were still in there trying to
09:02score.
