00:00Good afternoon.
00:11Good afternoon, everyone.
00:12Welcome to our pre-match press conference to preview our game against Tottenham Hotspur.
00:16We'll start off with Vinnie from Sky.
00:18David, how's the settling in going, if you've indeed had to settle in?
00:22Look, I've enjoyed it.
00:23It's been busy.
00:24I mentioned that last week that we've been full on all week,
00:27but, look, all going well, as well as we could expect,
00:31except for the result in midweek.
00:33In terms of players you've got available, James Garner, Tim Irubinam,
00:36Dwight McNeil.
00:36How far away are they?
00:39Well, Jimmy's back on the pitch training,
00:42but the others at the moment aren't.
00:44We're hoping that, you know, Dwight isn't too far away,
00:47but we're just waiting for some more information, really.
00:50So, that's about it, really.
00:52Tim's just still just about to get back training as well now.
00:55Chimiti and Seamus a bit further behind.
00:57Yes, Seamus just had a slight injury in training,
00:59so they're a wee bit behind that, yes.
01:01Any update on Breuer?
01:02Is he definitely going to go back?
01:04Is that loan deal going to happen?
01:05No, I don't think it's absolutely.
01:07I said in the press conference after the game,
01:09when I was asked the question, that, you know,
01:11I think his injury now feels like it's going to take longer than we
01:15hoped it would do when he first picked up his injury.
01:18So, it's one of the options which might be available,
01:21and the other people around the club,
01:24they're talking about it with Chelsea just now as well.
01:26In terms of you possibly adding to the squad,
01:28what value do you see in today's market?
01:30The reason I ask is because we go back to your first spell in charge,
01:33and in the January transfer,
01:35some of the January transfers you were able to do,
01:37thinking of Nikiča Jelović,
01:38it's 13 years since you brought him in in January.
01:40He hit 11 and 16 in all competitions that season.
01:43Landon Donovan, his first loan spell,
01:45two goals in seven Premier League games.
01:47Brian McBride hit four in seven starts.
01:50You've got Arteta on loan,
01:51Steven Pienaar on loan for his second spell.
01:54Manuel Fernandes back in 2007 as well.
01:57Do you see that kind of value in today's market?
01:59Not a bad group of players to bring in,
02:00wasn't it, when you look back now?
02:02It really was.
02:03And I have to say,
02:04most of them have all made contact as well when I've come back,
02:07so they're all good boys as well.
02:10Look, I don't know if there is that level of value out there at the moment
02:14for the players you're talking about,
02:15but we're looking really closely,
02:17like everybody else is.
02:19I think the hardest thing is when you drop into a club in,
02:22I came in probably the first week or so,
02:24week and a half into the transfer window.
02:26You're trying to catch up with what the club can do,
02:28what we need, trying to work it out yourself a little bit as well.
02:32But we're getting there,
02:33we're trying to get things in place,
02:35if we can do some business,
02:36we'll try and do it if possible.
02:37And Ernest Neumar,
02:38what can you tell us about the situation there?
02:41Because we understood that a deal was potentially on the table,
02:44faint to come from Leon,
02:45but obviously when you talk about playing catch-up,
02:46does he come into that?
02:48Well, he's a player who I know that we've been looking at,
02:50but I couldn't say for a minute that I think it's done or it's underway.
02:54I'm only, unless something's happening,
02:57I don't know.
02:57But at the moment we're looking at some players,
02:59he's one of them,
03:00and hopefully we can get some before the end of the season,
03:04before the end of the transfer window, I should say.
03:06Tomatoes on the pitch,
03:07what do you expect from Spurs?
03:09Because one week we see them lose 6-3 to Liverpool,
03:11they then beat them 1-0 in the Cup,
03:13and then we see Ange Postacoglu unhappy at the performances
03:16that his side put in in the North London derby the other night.
03:20Well, I know Ange quite well enough over the years,
03:23but the job he did at Celtic was incredible,
03:24it really was.
03:26He's come down,
03:27he's taken on a really big job at Tottenham Hotspur,
03:29as everybody's aware.
03:31I think he's done a lot of really good things at Tottenham.
03:34I think his side can be a little bit up and down at the moment,
03:37but that's only because that's the way football is,
03:40and I have to say their side,
03:43which play incredibly open, attacking football,
03:47so everybody's quite aware of what he doesn't change.
03:50He's said that to everybody,
03:51he doesn't change what he does,
03:52so all credit to him.
03:55I heard you after the game against FILA the other night,
03:59you spoke about the positives that you saw in the performance.
04:01What's your message to the players now to take that on from there?
04:05Well, look, we were obviously disappointed not to get something out of the game,
04:09but there were opportunities in the night
04:10where maybe a goal would have changed it
04:12and made us feel slightly different about the outcome on the night.
04:17But look, we made a few chances, which was positive.
04:19We didn't quite finish them.
04:22We gave up one or two chances the first half,
04:24but not so bad as the game went on.
04:26We probably had a bit more of the ball than we've had for a while as well.
04:29So there were some good signs.
04:32Obviously, we need to just make that special moment count.
04:35We didn't quite do so well on set pieces on the night,
04:40and one or two other bits and pieces,
04:41but partly due to the quickness of getting in and not having time to do every job possible.
04:47Just finally, one thing to check,
04:48David, talk that Charlie Adam could be joining your backroom staff.
04:51What's the situation?
04:52Well, I've mentioned that I'd like to bring in somebody to take care of the set pieces in some ways,
04:57and Charlie's one of a few people who are actually getting mentioned to me.
05:00I've had a lot of people enquiring about it, a lot of very good people.
05:04So, not made a decision on it yet,
05:07but hopefully we might get close to something shortly.
05:09Thank you. Good luck.
05:11Thanks, Vinny. We'll go to John to Premier League Productions.
05:13Afternoon, David. Hi there.
05:14Just sticking with the game in midweek,
05:16many people thought Vitaly Mikhalenko looked a lot more confident,
05:19a lot more assured.
05:20We spoke to him this morning.
05:22He said you had a little bit of a conversation with him,
05:24gave him a bit more licence to get forward.
05:27Is that something you said to him?
05:28Is that something that you want to see more of him,
05:30and something that you want to encourage as you look for players to be effective in the final third?
05:34Absolutely.
05:35I'd love to get both my full backs on.
05:37I think my time here, we probably had,
05:40I think we had the biggest assist maker in the Premier League in Leighton Baines at one time,
05:44and went on to become an England international.
05:47So, we'd love to get a combination going like we did when it was Baines and Pienaar,
05:50for example, but Mikko,
05:53no, we want him to get forward and join in.
05:55He actually put in a really good ball that Decoury got on the end of,
06:00but didn't quite finish, and he won it a bit later on as well.
06:02So, we want to up those numbers.
06:05No, two good crosses in the game is not enough.
06:07We need to get him up to six or seven if we can,
06:10but we want that to happen on the right side as well.
06:13We want to try and get opportunities to get forward a bit more when we can.
06:17And I want you to somewhat forget footballing technicalities here.
06:21You will, of course, need some of that this weekend as well,
06:23but what are the true human characteristics,
06:27if you will, that you need to see from your group of players
06:29when you approach this run, the tail end of the season?
06:32And is it somewhat more than football?
06:34Because I know it is, to be fair.
06:35Well, I think you're right.
06:36I think that team spirit, togetherness, individual characteristics,
06:42you know, that you stand up and be counted,
06:43you know, you don't hide.
06:46They cover a multitude, and when you actually start getting into them all,
06:49you could come up with lots of different things,
06:51but quite simply, you know, if they continue to show the desire
06:54they've been showing, I thought a lot of the players on the night
06:58fought really hard trying to get a result, good attitude.
07:01So all those things need to be part of it.
07:04When you're not doing so well,
07:05they're the minimum you hope that you're going to get from them.
07:07So we have to try and keep those bits up,
07:10hope our luck changes,
07:12hope the couple of chances we get the next time they'll go in
07:15and we can start to pick up some points.
07:17And I know just finally, a lot of questions you'll be taking are about
07:20how do we score goals at the opposite end?
07:24Positive for you, Jordan Pickford,
07:25a word on him, 300 appearances for this football club.
07:29Just how impressed with him have you been?
07:32And what does he mean to this football club?
07:35Well, I think I gave Jordan his debut at Sunderland.
07:38Big Sam might have, but I think I did, and I put him on the team.
07:42And then actually, when I left Sunderland, I'd said to Bill Kenwright,
07:45I said, you should sign the goalkeeper.
07:47He's so good.
07:47So that meant that Jordan was, well,
07:52they went ahead and signed Jordan.
07:53And I think he's been great.
07:55He's going to become England's number one for numerous years now.
07:58So, no, I had early times with Jordan
08:02and I'm looking forward to working with him again.
08:04And it's great that he's got 300 appearances for this club
08:08because it's a great privilege to do that.
08:11Brilliant, thank you very much.
08:12Next chance here, we'll go to Shamul at the BBC.
08:15Hi David. Hi there, how are you doing?
08:16Good, thanks. First, are you able to explain the complexities
08:20and difficulties of taking charge of a club part way through a season?
08:25Well, I'm probably as experienced,
08:28and I think I'm the oldest, certainly in the league,
08:29but I'm probably as experienced as MD with the games I've got,
08:32in the Premier League, certainly.
08:35So I should know it as well as MD, and it's really, really difficult.
08:39I think this club has got different connotations around it as well
08:42that are strange as well.
08:45But I think that coming in and trying to take over a job very quickly is never easy.
08:50This one feels easier because I've been here before,
08:52know a lot of the people here, know a lot of the staff and the people around the place.
08:57But ultimately, I'm still coming into a situation which has been difficult
09:00and I have to try and build it up again and get it right.
09:03But, you know, managers have to do it, it's part of the job, you know.
09:07You don't always get the jobs exactly when you want them,
09:09maybe in the summertime when you've got a bit of time to prepare them.
09:13But this one, as I said at the time, really came on incredibly quickly.
09:18If we take someone like Amirim at your former club, Manchester United,
09:22as an example, still looking like he's getting his methods across.
09:26How long do you think it's going to take yourself to get fully across the ideas that you want to get?
09:31Well, we're slightly different because we're in a position where it's winning is probably always...
09:37I'm not saying that Man United are any different because I'm sure they are,
09:40but we've got to try and get ourselves back to winning ways as quickly as we can.
09:44The things we've talked about, scoring goals, you know, all those points,
09:48we've got to try and find a way of getting more of them.
09:52So, I think there'll be plenty of time to get my ways over,
09:54but I think first and foremost is concentrating on what the players can do here
09:59and see if we can get them out of this difficult position.
10:02It looks like the media glares on in one win in nine league games.
10:08What's that like as a manager when there's that constant speculation,
10:11that constant talk about your position?
10:14Well, I hope it's not about my position.
10:16I'm only in one game, you know, but you never know.
10:19In this game, you know, it can change very quickly.
10:23But I think the point you're making is, you know,
10:25you've got to try and win the games and, as I'm saying,
10:27it's really important to get good, positive results.
10:31I believe we're going in the right direction.
10:34We've got a tough run of fixtures, actually, when you look at having Aston Villa, Tottenham and Brighton coming up.
10:38So, it's quite a difficult period.
10:42Hi David, when you talk about the full-backs and attacking,
10:49like were in your previous Everton side and overlapping with the wingers,
10:53given you've got Leighton Baines in your coaching set-up now,
10:56is that a huge part of his role?
10:57Because I imagine there's no better teacher than someone who's been there and done it.
11:00Yeah, I agree, totally.
11:02And, you know, the people who watched us back then would have said that Baines,
11:05he was fabulous at it and got forward plenty and joined in.
11:09So, if we can get the chance to work and get time to do so,
11:13we'll try and see if we can get Mikko to do something similar.
11:16But, meanwhile, we have to find a way of, you know,
11:18making sure that everybody's involved and we find ways of getting results.
11:25This week, we found out that the club complied with the PSR round this time.
11:29So, does that help you in this transfer window
11:32and do you have any specific priorities at the moment?
11:36Well, I'm probably not the person you should be speaking about it,
11:39I think, because I've only come in and I don't quite have all the full information.
11:44But I think that things are looking much, much better than they were.
11:47Obviously, new ownerships come in as well, which will help greatly.
11:51So, I hope that it doesn't affect us too much,
11:55and certainly in this transfer window.
11:57And I'm sure as we go on,
11:59then it'll be much more easier to do business in the future.
12:03Harrison Armstrong, he's only a young member of your squad.
12:07What have you seen from him?
12:09And do you think he can be somebody for the future or roundabout now?
12:13Yeah, I've been hugely impressed.
12:15I mean, look, we've only had a couple of days training,
12:18so it's very difficult to judge things and work out exactly how people are
12:22and what they can do. And you have games,
12:25so you're preparing, you're not always doing things,
12:27but you can see them in big areas and how they play in small areas as well.
12:33But I have to say, what I've seen of him at the moment,
12:35I've been hugely impressed.
12:36And I think he's got a bit of personality as well.
12:38So, let's hope. And finally,
12:41you know the expectation of Evertonians from your first time.
12:45You know how passionate they are,
12:47given how difficult it's been the last few years supporting Everton.
12:51I just wondered what your message was right now to some very concerned fans,
12:55I think. Yeah, well, I hope that,
12:58I mean, they'll always be incredibly loyal here.
13:01That's the one thing they will be. I think the last couple of years,
13:04it's been nip and tuck, and it looks like this one could be as well.
13:07So, we need them to be hugely with us, hugely behind us.
13:10And I thought they were brilliant the other night against Aston Villa.
13:14I think the players on the other night, you know, ran Aston Villa really close.
13:19And as I said, maybe we'd got something out of it.
13:22There might not have been too much to complain about,
13:24but obviously getting out those wins,
13:27and I keep repeating myself, but it's so important.
13:30It'll bring back some confidence, a bit of trust in everything we're doing.
13:34So, hopefully we can get started and get that win.
13:38Next, we'll finish off with Karl Markham from the Press Association.
13:43Hi, David. Hi there. Just a quick one.
13:45As Vinny's already pointed out, you always had an eye for a decent player and the bargain.
13:50I'm just wondering how involved you can actually get in that yourself this month?
13:55That's really, for me, it's probably the hardest bit,
13:58is to come in and suddenly know what's going on,
14:01and what would be the best.
14:03And actually, as I said last week, we're really busy.
14:06I'm trying to spend a few hours in the recruitment room to try and see where we're looking,
14:10what we're doing, and that's taken up quite a lot of time as well,
14:15while I'm still trying to work the team and do all the other bits as well.
14:19But in the days gone by,
14:22we always had a great idea of what players, especially through the Championship,
14:25when you look at the players we brought at that time,
14:28maybe the club was in a different place,
14:30and I think probably football generally was in a different place there,
14:33where it was maybe a bit easier to go and buy.
14:36Maybe not everybody was out watching quite as much as we are today.
14:41Obviously, every game is getting covered through the analysts and the TVs, etc., etc.
14:47But we made a great business out of the Championship in those early days,
14:52and there's quite a few players who obviously went on to become really top players.
14:58So, as you say, the club has a recruitment department and a director of football.
15:03So, have you been able to offer your input?
15:06Have you come with ideas of players you might want?
15:09A little bit. Well, obviously, we need players at the moment who we think can help us in the Premier League in our position,
15:17but we're also hoping that we could buy players for the future as well.
15:20So, if there's something that we could get,
15:22which we think hopefully is going to be here for four or five years or longer and doing well for the team,
15:29but trying to get that in January would be difficult.
15:31You know, if I had been in the hot seat for a lot longer,
15:34you would have been definitely saying,
15:35hey, you know, you had more time to see it.
15:37I think coming in very quickly makes it quite difficult to sort of get on top of all the players,
15:43what's getting put to you.
15:45Thanks, Karl. Any further questions in the open section before we move on?
15:49No. OK, thank you.
