00:00This morning, DSWD launched the Angel Pets Program
00:05which is an animal-assisted therapy program.
00:08Here is the report.
00:12It's been a long time since your dogs came out.
00:16I hope you always come out for us.
00:20This patient became emotional at the Sanctuary Center,
00:23a care facility of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, or DSWD,
00:28in Mandaluyong City after going under for an animal-assisted therapy session.
00:34According to the caregiver, a social worker,
00:37she has been in the facility for 8 years and was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
00:42She said she was happy because the visit of the dogs made her feel better.
00:49This patient was shocked while being hugged by a dog.
00:54She was diagnosed with undifferentiated schizophrenia.
00:59She has been in the Sanctuary Center for 20 years and no one visits her family.
01:04She recalled a memory that she had a dog when she was outside.
01:11Before she was admitted to the center, that's what she said.
01:16This therapy session, called the Angel Pets Program of DSWD,
01:22although in other countries, there is a study that animal-assisted therapy has a good effect,
01:29the Philippine Animal Welfare Society of POWS believes that their dogs
01:34can help in the recovery of a patient.
01:38This is based on their observation since 1997 when POWS launched the Dr. Dogs.
01:45In the pediatric cancer ward, we were allowed to go to the garden.
01:51So, the children with cancer, in wheelchairs, they go to the garden.
01:56In the National Children's Hospital, we were also allowed,
01:58even in the Hospital of Manila, we were allowed to go room-to-room.
02:02We can see here in the US, in Europe, that the dogs in other countries,
02:07including cats or other pets, you really use them as a form of therapy.
02:12According to Gatchalian, they will study within 6 months
02:16if the Angel Pets or Dr. Dogs has a good effect on the patients of the Sanctuary Center.
02:22And if there is a good result, the agency will do an institutionalized program
02:29that can be implemented in 76 DSWD care centers and private care facilities of the country.
02:36For our social workers and psychometricians,
02:39we will look at the positive effect on our clients.
02:43Their backing tends to lend more credibility to the program.
02:49Even though we don't have Philippine Studies yet,
02:51they are the ones who launched the actual Philippine Studies.
02:54The first implementation of the Angel Pets program of DSWD
02:58is part of the 74th anniversary of the agency.
03:02Aside from the Sanctuary Center that takes care of 18-year-old girls who have mental illness,
03:10it is also being implemented in Marillac Hills, Alabang,
03:14that takes care of 7 to 17-year-old girls who have a responsibility to the law,
03:21victims of harassment, and human trafficking.
