00:00For the past 38 years, the Nangkiwana Special Games have been held every year
00:05where young and adults in the autism spectrum can participate in various games and receive medals.
00:15There's a good advocacy and since the 33rd edition of this special game is coming soon,
00:22we will be able to bring in people who are tireless in helping to make this event possible every year.
00:28We are joined this morning by Sir Armando Busumente and Atty. Melvin Mendoza.
00:34They are the past lieutenant governors of the Kiwanis Club of Kalayaan.
00:38We are also joined by Grace Espinas, the past division secretary.
00:42Good morning to all of you and welcome back to Rise and Shine Pilipinas.
00:45Good morning to all of you and thank you for inviting us to your great show.
00:50Thank you for being with us this morning.
00:52Can you tell us more about this Kiwanis Special Games?
00:55Kiwanis Special Games is organized by Kiwanis International.
01:00This is a civic organization that is present in more than 80 countries worldwide.
01:05Our organization is known by the motto that we have,
01:08Serving the Children of the World.
01:11So that is our motto and this special games is a special event for our hearts
01:17because it's not just the children we are helping but also the children with autism.
01:23For this year, will there be any changes to the special games?
01:28Will there be any additions or changes to the games?
01:31Most likely, almost every year, but this time because this is our second time here at Marikina Esports Center,
01:41we decided that of course we will improve in terms of execution of events and games,
01:48preparation, we put more time in preparation,
01:52and more colorful because we have young people from an elementary school
01:59that at least 100 kids will go with a parade in colors, in lyre and drum.
02:09Okay, we are expecting how many individuals will join here,
02:13will participate and where else will the participants come from?
02:17In terms of athletes, we have about 500 special children that joined,
02:27and we have more than 400 volunteers of course to help those kids.
02:34And then we have at least 16 special schools,
02:43most of them employ more special children,
02:48athletes. In fact, one of the special schools sent more than 60 kids per school.
03:02So there are still a lot. Our total athletes are about 500.
03:06Oh, there are a lot, 500. But Atty. Melvin, how do you feel that
03:11the impact of these programs is great and you can help those on the autism spectrum?
03:18You know, there is nothing that beats helping others.
03:22I'd like to cite a specific example that I thought I only saw in movies.
03:28This was an event where the children were asked to do a 150-meter dash.
03:35But you know, this is not really a competition for them.
03:38It's a way of expressing themselves in an as-per-feet.
03:45So in this special event, this happened more than 20 years ago.
03:49I was a witness to this.
03:56And the one who was running ahead saw that his body fell down.
04:01He stopped.
04:05And then they proceeded to run.
04:11But you can see that even among the special children,
04:18they know what happiness is all about. They know what competition is all about.
04:23And you can see the smile on their faces after the competition.
04:30So the feeling that you can see and make the children happy in a special event,
04:37that's good enough for us, for all our efforts, all the resources that we spend.
04:45That's really inspiring, maybe because it's been going on for 39 years,
04:49these kinds of events that we do.
04:51Ma'am, what are the preparations that we do here at 39th Q1 Special Games?
04:57So we do orientation for all the volunteers.
05:06We do orientation for volunteers for the preparation for this event.
05:11Okay.
05:25Although we have orientation with special teachers,
05:32series of orientation, at least four or five orientation.
05:42So that they can be familiar with the procedures.
05:46The parents, of course, they are there mostly like a support,
05:50but they are not allowed to intervene with the games, only the teachers and volunteers.
05:55All right. Okay.
05:56Also, this special games received a silver award at the Kiwanis International
06:02Signature Project Contest last year in Denver, Colorado.
06:05Can you tell us more about this?
06:07Yes.
06:09After so many years, Kiwanis International, our mother organization,
06:14recognized the efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Calayan, which spearheads this project.
06:19But more than that, it's also a project that is supported by so many other Kiwanis Clubs.
06:24So they saw what we are doing, they saw the efforts of the kids,
06:29and they gave special recognition, not only by an ordinary award,
06:32but there is also a cash award that was given.
06:351.5? $1,500?
06:38$1,500, yes.
06:39That's good enough to help support the next activity of the club.
06:43Yes, yes.
06:44All right.
06:45So when will this happen?
06:47Actually, what I'm saying is,
06:49I'm sorry, Art.
06:50What happened, of course, the awarding was done in Colorado.
06:55But the 39th Special Games, we will be holding it at Marikina Sports Center this coming Sunday.
07:05Oh, it's already Sunday?
07:06Yes, February 23rd.
07:08It will start around 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
07:11But our volunteers, they will start as early as around 8, 9 o'clock in the morning.
07:18Good luck with that event.
07:20Thank you very much for coming here this morning.
07:23Thank you very much for the opportunity.
07:25And we hope you could join us also.
07:27Sure.
07:28Thank you so much for sharing advocacy.
07:29Thank you and stay safe.
